The Karthikai Deepam Video

The Deepam video clips below are in Flash 8 FLV format - you will need the Adobe Media Player to view them.

Karthikai Deepem at Arunachala is a ten day festival celebrating the appearance of Lord Siva as a column of light at Tiruvannamalai - which later condensed into the Linga known as Arunachala Hill.

300 years ago the festival was a single day affair, when the beacon would be lit on the mountain summit. By bringing together a number of other celebrations, this has now extended to ten days for the main festival, with three days of preparatory functions at the beginning and four days of smaller functions at the end.

The 10 day main festival begins with the flag-hoisting and ends with the beacon being lit on the tenth night.

Included here are the full 17 days of functions in high-quality FLV format, grouped together to form files of approximately 40-80mb each for download to your computer. These videos do not have a composed soundtrack or commentary, but contain the original background sounds.

If this is ever released as a DVD movie, then both soundtrack and commentary will be added.
