Tour of Sri Ramanasramam - Photos 1 & 2
These views are from the road outside Sri Ramanasramam. In the first photo Tiruvannamalai is behind the photographer and the Ashram entrance is to the right, opposite the yellow auto-rickshaw.
Auto-rickshaws are available day or night, with the drivers often sleeping in the cramped vehicles. The current fare to the Big Temple in town is Rs.25, but negotiate the fare before engaging a rickshaw - the less honest ones will try to overcharge you.
Unless you are on a quick shopping trip, do not ask the auto-rickshaw to wait for you as they will charge you for waiting time and this is usually extortionate. There are over 1,500 auto-rickshaws in Tiruvannamalai and Westerners have no trouble hailing one.
Vehicles can be parked in the car-park, but it should be remembered that the gates are locked from 9.00pm to 5.00am and during the day from 12.00 noon to 2.00pm. Pedestrian access is always open through the side gate visible to the left.
Beggars can be clearly seen at the gates - they usually arrive at 5.00am and leave by 9.00pm.
