Practical Sadhana - Which Way Within - 2

We have heard from Krishna and his disciple, the description of
the nature of the mind.  We know from science that the vital nature
of all life is in the blood.  The life-blood of the mind is movement!
To concentrate means to steady and ulitmately control this movement that constantly produces distraction [mental restlessness].  Therefore, to establish concentration in meditation is to control
the mind.  But how to do so?

When Bhagavan Ramana was living on the sacred Arunachala in the
Virupaksha Cave, a devotee whose most urgent concern was this
very question visited him daily.

The devotee asked Bhagavan:

"Of the means for mind-control, which is the most important?

The Master replied:

"Breath-control is the means for mind control." 

"How is the breath-control the means of mind-control?"

Bhagavan Ramana replied:  "There is no doubt that breath-control
is the means for mind-control, because, the mind, like breath, is a
part of air, because the nature of mobility is common to both, because of the place of origin is common to both, and because when one of
them is controlled, the other gets controlled."

Bhagavan Ramana speaks clearly of breath-control in Chapter
VI of the Sri Ramana Gita as well.

"One should control the fickle mind by controlling the breath and
then it, like a tethered animal ceases to stray."

"With the control of breath, control of thoughts also is achieved.
When thoughts are controlled, one stands established at their source."

"Control of breath means merely watching with the mind the flow
of breath.  Through such constant watching 'kumbhaka' does
come about."

[ Bhagavan Ramana has also given this same idea in Upadesa Saram and also to Sivaprakasam Pillai, in Who am I?.  But in Who am I?,
He has stated that vairagya is stamping out the thoughts at their
birthplace and thoughts however numberless they may be, should
be crushed as and when they occur.]
