Verse  758:



தென்னவன் தன்னை நோக்கித்
    திருமேனி எளியர் போலும்
இன்னருட் பிள்ளை யார்மற்
    றிவர் எண்ணி லார்கள்
மன்னநின் மயக்க மெங்கள்
    வள்ளலார் தீர நல்கும்
பின்னையிவ் வமணர் மூள்வார்
    வல்லரேல் பேச என்றார்.


Addressing the king, she said: "The godly child
Of sweet grace, is truly a tender boy; countless
Are they that stand yonder; O king, the vertigo
Will sure be cured by our patron; thereafter
If they still deem themselves competent
They can go ahead with the disputation."

Verse  759:


மாறனும் அவரை நோக்கி
    வருந்தல்நீ என்று மற்று
வேறுவா தென்கொல் என்மேல்
    வெப்பொழித் தருகர் நீரும்
ஆறணி சடையி னாருக்
    கன்பராம் இவரும் நீங்கள்
தேறிய தெய்வத் தன்மை
    என்னிடைத் தெரிப்பீர் என்றான்.



The Pandya spake to her thus: "Grieve not." Then he said:
"What other disputation is needed here?
You Samanas and he, the devotee of the Lord
Who is river-crested, may cure me of my fever,
And thus manifest in me the true divinity
Of your respective deities clearly."

Verse  760:


ஞானஆ ரமுத முண்டார்
    நற்றவத் திருவை நோக்கி
மானினேர் விழியி னாய்கேள்
    மற்றெனைப் பால னென்று
நீநனி அஞ்சவேண்டா
    நிலையிலா அமணர்க் கென்றும்
யான்எளி யேன லேன்என்
    றெழுந்திருப் பதிகம் பாடி.



ஞான அமுதை உண்ட ஞானசம்பந்தர் நற்றவம் உடைய மங்கையர்க்கரசியாரை நோக்கி, `மானின் நேர் விழியினாய்! கேட்பாயாக! என்னைச் சிறுவன் என்று எண்ணி அச்சம் கொள்ள வேண்டுவதின்று, நல்ல நிலையில் ஒருமையுறாத சமணர்களுக்கு என்றும் நான் எளியன் அல்லேன்' எனும் கருத்துப்பட எழுகின்ற திருப்பதிகத்தைப் பாடி,

Verse  761:



பெற்றியால் அருளிச் செய்த
    பிள்ளையார் தமக்கும் முன்னம்
சுற்றுநின் றழைத்தல் ஓவா
    அருகர்க்கும் தென்னர் கோமான்
இற்றைநாள் என்னை உற்ற
    பிணியைநீர் இகலித் தீரும்
தெற்றெனத் தீர்த்தார் வாதில்
    வென்றனர் என்று செப்ப.



To the godly child who graced (them) through
A decadE of hymns, and the Samanas
Who ceased not to bawl, the Pandya spake thus:
"Let this be the wager; this day, you both try
To cure me of my ailment; whoever wins
Is also the winner in the disputation."

Verse  762:




மன்னவன் மாற்றங் கேட்டு
    வடிவுபோல் மனத்து மாசு
துன்னிய அமணர் தென்னர்
    தோன்றலை நோக்கி நாங்கள்
உன்னுடம்பு அதனில் வெப்பை
    ஒருபுடை வாம பாகம்
முன்னம்மந் திரித்துத் தெய்வ
    முயற்சியால் தீர்த்து மென்றார்.



Hearing the words of the king, the Samanas,
Blemished alike in body and soul,
Addressed the scion of the Pandya race thus:
"We will first, by incantation of mantras,
Cure the fever on the left half of your body
By the grace of our God."

Verse  763:



யாதும்ஒன் றறிவி லாதார்
    இருளென அணையச் சென்று
வாதினில் மன்ன வன்தன்
    வாமபா கத்தைத் தீர்ப்பார்
மீதுதம் பீலி கொண்டு
    தடவிட மேன்மேல் வெப்புத்
தீதுறப் பொறாது மன்னன்
    சிரபுரத் தவரைப் பார்த்தான்.



The Samanas, the utterly-incompetent ones
To comprehend aught, like darkness, moved
Near the king and attempted to win the wager
By curing the fever in the left half;
But when they brushed the person of the king
With their peacock-feathers, the fever but raged
The more; unable to endure it,
The king cast his look on Sirapuram's chief.

Verse 764:



தென்னவன் நோக்கங் கண்டு
    திருக்கழு மலத்தார் செல்வர்
அன்னவன் வலப்பால் வெப்பை
    ஆலவாய் அண்ணல் நீறே
மன்னும்மந் திரமு மாகி
    மருந்துமாய்த் தீர்ப்ப தென்று
பன்னிய மறைக ளேத்திப்
    பகர்திருப் பதிகம் பாடி.


Taking the cue from the Pandya?s look
The Prince of Tirukkazhumalam hymned
A divine decade in Tamizh, verily the essence
Of the Vedas, by which he declared that
The abiding medicine and mantra for the fever
On the right side of the king, was the holy ash
Of the Lord of Aalavaai.

Verse 765:


திருவளர் நீறு கொண்டு
    திருக்கையால் தடவத் தென்னன்
பொருவரு வெப்பு நீங்கிப்
    பொய்கையிற் குளிர்ந்த தப்பால்
மருவிய இடப்பால் மிக்க
    அழலெழ மண்டு தீப்போல்
இருபுடை வெப்புங் கூடி
    இடங்கொளா தென்னப் பொங்க.



When the godly child bedaubed the holy ash
Of ever-increasing divinity, with his sacred hand
On the person of the king, the peerless fever vanished
And his right half became cool like a pool;
But the fever began to rage the more on his left side;
The heat of the two sides burned concentrated
On the left, and began to soar up, not contained.

Verse 766:

உறியுடைக் கையர் பாயின்
    உடுக்கையர் நடுக்க மெய்திச்
செறிமயிற் பீலி தீயத்
    தென்னன்வெப் புறுதீத் தம்மை
எறியமா சுடலுங் கன்றி
    அருகுவிட் டேற நிற்பார்
அறிவுடை யாரை ஒத்தார்
    அறிவிலா நெறியில் நின்றார்.


The Samanas who carry Kamandalas in hoops
And whose cloaks are mats, began to tremble;
Their peacock-feather clusters became singed;
As their dirty bodies were smitten by the heat
Of the king?s fever, they were burnt black;
They moved far away from the king;
Though they were the adherents of the brainless faith,
They now resembled the wise ones.

Verse  767:


பலர்தொழும் புகலி மன்னர்
    ஒருபுடை வெப்பைப் பாற்ற
மலர்தலை யுலகின் மிக்கார்
    வந்ததி சயித்துச் சூழ
இலகுவேல் தென்னன் மேனி
    வலமிடம் எய்தி நீடும்
உலகினில் தண்மை வெம்மை
    ஒதுங்கினால் ஒத்த தன்றே.



When the fever on one side was cured by the Prince
Of Pukali hailed by the many, the wise men
On earth came thither and in wonderment
Stood encircling him; as the heat on the other side
Came to abide at the left half of the king,
The wielder of the spear, it looked as though
That in this world, heat and cool
Chose to abide in juxtaposition.

Verse  768:


மன்னவன் மொழிவான் என்னே
    மதித்தஇக் காலம் ஒன்றில்
வெந்நர கொருபா லாகும்
    வீட்டின்பம் ஒருபா லாகும்
துன்னுநஞ் சொருபா லாகும்
    சுவையமு தொருபா லாகும்
என்வடி வொன்றி லுற்றேன்
    இருதிறத் தியல்பும் என்பான்.



The king then spake thus: "What wonder is this?
In one and the same time (and place), cruel Hell is
On one side and blissful deliverance on the other;
On one side reigns venom, and on the other
Sweet nectar; in my single body I experience
The effects of two opposing elements."

Verse  769:

வெந்தொழில் அருகர் தோற்றீர்
    என்னைவிட் டகல நீங்கும்
வந்தெனை உய்யக் கொண்ட
    மறைக்குல வள்ள லாரே
இந்தவெப்பு அடைய நீங்க
    எனக்கருள் புரிவீ ரென்று
சிந்தையால் தொழுது சொன்னான்
    செல்கதிக் கணிய னானான்.


"O you Samanas of vile doings! You have lost;
Get away from me. O you Patron of the Brahmin clan--
Come to redeem me--, be pleased to extirpate
This fever completely." Adoring the godly child
With all his mind, the king who had neared
The path of redemption, beseeched him, thus:

Verse  770:


திருமுகங் கருணை காட்டத்
    திருக்கையால் நீறு காட்டிப்
பெருமறை துதிக்கு மாற்றால்
    பிள்ளையார் போற்றிப் பின்னும்
ஒருமுறை தடவ அங்கண்
    ஒழிந்துவெப் பகன்று பாகம்
மருவுதீப் பிணியும் நீங்கி வழுதியும்
    முழுதும் உய்ந்தான்.

His divine face beamed with compassion;
His divine hand held the holy ash;
He prayed even as the Vedas would pray;
Once again he bedaubed the king's person therewith;
The fever of the king quit him forthwith;
With the ailment on the left half gone,
The Pandya stood completely cured.

Verse  771:


கொற்றவன் தேவி யாரும்
    குலச்சிறை யாரும் தீங்கு
செற்றவர் செய்ய பாதத்
    தாமரை சென்னி சேர்த்துப்
பெற்றனம் பெருமை யின்று
    பிறந்தனம் பிறவா மேன்மை
உற்றனன் மன்னன் என்றே
    உளங்களித் துவகை மிக்கார்.



The king's consort and Kulacchiraiyaar
Fell at the roseate and lotus-like feet of him,
The queler of evil; their crowns were fixed
On his feet and they said: "We are the recipients
Of glory; indeed we are born this day; the king too
Has attained to the greatness of birth-less-ness."
Their hearts leaped with joy.

Verse  772:


மீனவன் தன்மேல் உள்ள
    வெப்பெலாம் உடனே மாற
ஆனபே ரின்ப மெய்தி
    உச்சிமே லங்கை கூப்பி
மானமொன் றில்லார் முன்பு
    வன்பிணி நீக்க வந்த
ஞானசம் பந்தர் பாதம்
    நண்ணிநான் உய்ந்தேன் என்றான்.


Rid totally of the fever the Pandya felt blessed
With bliss; folding his hands above his head
He said: "I stand redeemed by my reaching the feet
Of Jnaana Sambandhar who had come here
To cure me of my cruel malady in the presence
Of the shameless Samanas."
