Verse  356:



வெங்க திர்ப்பக லக்க டத்திடை
   வெய்ய வன்கதிர் கைபரந்
தெங்கு மிக்கபி ளப்பி னாகர்தம்
   எல்லை புக்கெரி கின்றன
பொங்க ழல்தெறு பாலை வெந்நிழல்
   புக்க சூழல் புகும்பகல்
செங்க திர்க்கனல் போலும் அத்திசை
   திண்மை மெய்த்தவர் நண்ணினார்.


In the forest, during mid-day fierce, the sun
Smote cruelly; its rays spread everywhere and the ground
Was full of fissures through which fire blazed
Even down to the bourne of the Naka-loka; the rays
Of the sun that invaded the hot shades in the fissures
Of the fiery and destructive wilderness, were thus
Flaming hot; yet he that was poised
In true, steadfast tapas marched on.

Verse 357:


இங்ங னம்இர வும்ப கற்பொழு
   தும்ம ருஞ்சுரம் எய்துவார்
பங்க யம்புரை தாள்ப ரட்டள
   வும்ப சைத்தசை தேயவும்
மங்கை பங்கர்தம் வெள்ளி மால்வரை
   வைத்த சிந்தை மறப்பரோ
தங்க ரங்க ளிரண்டு மேகொடு
   தாவி ஏகுதல் மேவினார்.


He thus marched on, night and day, through the wild
Wilderness and his lotus-feet up to ankles withered away;
Yet, would he detach himself from his thought fixed
On the argent mount where abides Ammai-Appar?
He leaped onward with the sole help of his hands twain.

Verse  358:


கைக ளும்மணி பந்த சைந்துற
   வேக ரைந்து சிதைந்தபின்
மெய்க லந்தெழு சிந்தை அன்பின்
   விருப்பு மீமிசை பொங்கிட
மொய்க டுங்கனல் வெம்ப ரற்புகை
   மூளு மத்த முயங்கியே
மைகொள் கண்டர்தம் அன்பர் செல்ல
   வருந்தி உந்தினர் மார்பினால்.



His hands and wrists, disjointed, withered and wasted away,
Yet the great desire bred by his loving heart poised in truth
Grew more and more; the servitor of the blue-throated Lord
Prone on the dense gravel fiery whence smoke rose aloft,
Pushed his way with the aid of his chest.

Verse  359:


மார்ப முந்தசை நைந்து சிந்தி
   வரிந்த என்பு முரிந்திட
நேர்வ ருங்குறி நின்ற சிந்தையின்
   நேசம் ஈசனை நேடுநீடு
ஆர்வம் அங்குயிர் கொண்டு கைக்கும்
   உடம்ப டங்கவும் ஊன்கெடச்
சேர்வ ரும்பழு வம்பு ரண்டு
   புரண்டு சென்றனர் செம்மையோர்.



The flesh on his chest wore away; the bones thereof
Were cracked and thrown out of joint; his whole body
Was a total wreck; yet impelled by the arodor of life
Sustained by a heart firm poised in its coveted ideal
And the enduring love that ached for the darshan
Of the Lord, the godly devotee
Rolled and rolled on his way in that forest wild.

Verse  360:



அப்பு றம்புரள் கின்ற நீளிடை
   அங்கம் எங்கும் மரைந்திடச்
செப்ப ருங்கயி லைச்சி லம்படி
   சிந்தை சென்றுறு மாதலால்
மெய்ப்பு றத்தில் உறுப்ப ழிந்தபின்
   மெல்ல உந்து முயற்சியுந்
தப்பு றச்செய லின்றி அந்நெறி
   தங்கி னார்தமி ழாளியார்.



Thus he rolled on the long way; his entire body wasted away;
Mount Kailash; he could do nought else as he could
No longer move slowly or gently as all the limbs
Of his body had withered away; so the leonine servitor
Of Tamizh, lay on his way, undone.

Verse  361:



அன்ன தன்மையர் கயிலையை
   அணைவதற் கருளார்
மன்னு தீந்தமிழ் புவியின்மேற்
   பின்னையும் வழுத்த
நன்னெ டும்புனல் தடமும்ஒன்
   றுடன்கொடு நடந்தார்
பன்ன கம்புனை பரமரோர்
   முனிவராம் படியால்.



The Lord would not bless him of such plight to reach
Kailash; to help him hail Him hereafter too, on earth,
In Tamizh -- sweet and sempiternal --, the Supreme One
Who wears snakes for His jewels, in the habit of a Muni,
Came walking, taking with Him a great pool of pure water.

Verse 362:

வந்து மற்றவர் மருங்குற
   அணைந்துநேர் நின்று
நொந்து நோக்கிமற் றவர்எதிர்
   நோக்கிட நுவல்வார்
சிந்தி இவ்வுறுப் பழிந்திட
   வருந்திய திறத்தால்
இந்த வெங்கடத் தெய்திய
   தென்என இசைத்தார்.



He reached him and straight looked at him sorrowing;
The servitor too looked at Him; he then asked him;
"Why have you come here with all your limbs wasted away
And sore grieving, to this wilderness?"

Verse  363:


மாசில் வற்கலை ஆடையும்
   மார்பில்முந் நூலுந்
தேசு டைச்சடை மவுலியும்
   நீறும்மெய் திகழ
ஆசின் மெய்த்தவ ராகிநின்
   றவர்தமை நோக்கிப்
பேச உற்றதோர் உணர்வுற
   விளம்புவார் பெரியோர்.


The Muni was dressed in valkala; on His chest lay
The triple sacred thread; His crest of matted hair
Glowed with luster; the Holy Ash blazed on His person;
The flawless devotee true looked at Him that regarded
Him kindly; he was impelled to articulate
A few words by his inner consciousness.

Verse 364:


வண்டு லாங்குழல் மலைமக
   ளுடன்வட கயிலை
அண்டர் நாயகர் இருக்கும்அப்
   பரிசவர் அடியேன்
கண்டு கும்பிட விருப்பொடுங்
   காதலின் அடைந்தேன்
கொண்ட என்குறிப் பிதுமுனி
   யேஎனக் கூற .


Spake thus the great one: "O Muni! I am borne here
By a longing to worship in love the Lord of Kailash
In the north, the locks of whose Consort are buzzed
By bees; this indeed is my humble mission."

Verse  365:


கயிலை மால்வரை யாவது
   காசினி மருங்கு
பயிலும் மானுடப் பான்மையோர்
   அடைவதற் கெளிதோ
அயில்கொள் வேற்படை அமரரும்
   அணுகுதற் கரிதால்
வெயில்கொள் வெஞ்சுரத் தென்செய்தீர்
   வந்தென விளம்பி.



"Is the beauteous Mount Kailash easy of access
To the humans earth earthy? Even the celestial beings
Who wield weapons like sharp spears, cannot reach it;
Oh what folly is this that impelled you
To come to this wilderness, wild and hot?" Thus He

Verse 366:


மீளும் அத்தனை உமக்கினிக்
   கடன்என விளங்கும்
தோளும் ஆகமும் துவளுமுந்
   நூல்முனி சொல்ல
ஆளும் நாயகன் கயிலையில்
   இருக்கைகண் டல்லால்
மாளும் இவ்வுடல் கொண்டுமீ
   ளேன்என மறுத்தார்.


"Your sole duty is to return." When the Muni on whose
Shoulder bright and body beauteous, lay dangling
The triple sacred thread, spake thus, he would not agree
With him; he but said: "Without beholding my Ruler
Enshrined in Kailash, I'll not return with this --
My death-bound frame."

Verse 367:


ஆங்கு மற்றவர் துணிவறிந்
   தவர்தமை அறிய
நீங்கு மாதவர் விசும்பிடைக்
   கரந்துநீள் மொழியால்
ஓங்கு நாவினுக் கரசனே
   எழுந்திர்என் றுரைப்பத்
தீங்கு நீங்கிய யாக்கைகொண்
   டெழுந்தொளி திகழ்வார்.



Well aware of his resolution, the Muni moved
And vanished into the heavens; with His unbodied voice
He addressed him thus: "O lofty and sublime
Navukkarasu, rise! " Thus bidden, up he rose
With a flawless body which glowed with a luster rare.

Verse  368:


அண்ண லேஎனை ஆண்டுகொண்
   டருளிய அமுதே
விண்ணி லேமறைந் தருள்புரி
   வேதநா யகனே
கண்ணி னால்திருக் கயிலையில்
   இருந்தநின் கோலம்
நண்ணி நான்தொழ நயந்தருள்
   புரிஎனப் பணிந்தார்.



"O Glorious One! My Redeemer and my Nectar true!
O Lord of the Gospels who, hid in the skyey expanse
Confers grace on me! The beauty of Your Majesty
As throned in the Kailash, I long to behold with my eyes!
May You mercifully grant me this beatitude!"

Verse  369:


தொழுதெ ழுந்தநற் தொண்டரை
   நோக்கிவிண் தலத்தில்
எழுபெ ருந்திரு வாக்கினால்
   இறைவர்இப் பொய்கை
முழுகி நம்மைநீ கயிலையில்
   இருந்தஅம் முறைமை
பழுதில் சீர்த்திரு வையாற்றிற்
   காண்எனப் பணித்தார்.


The Lord eyed the servitor that rose up after his obeisance
And with His grand ethereal words commanded him thus:
"Get immersed in this pool and behold the vision of Ours
As in Kailash, in great and flawless Tiruvaiyaru."

Verse 370:


ஏற்றி னார்அருள் தலைமிசைக்
   கொண்டெழுந் திறைஞ்சி
வேற்று மாகிவிண் ணாகிநின்
   றார்மொழி விரும்பி
ஆற்றல் பெற்றவர் அண்ணலார்
   அஞ்செழுத் தோதிப்
பாற்ற டம்புனற் பொய்கையில்
   மூழ்கினார் பணியால்.



He wore as it were on his crown the grace of the Lord
Who rides the Bull, and adoring Him, hymned in love
The decade which oped thus: "He was other than the Empyrean
And the Empyrean too!" The devotee blessed with the puissance
Of grace, chanting the Panchakshara entered
The pool and into it immersed, as commanded.
