The following verse and the Padigam, composed and sung by Tiru Jnana Sambandhar,
on Siva of the temple in Tirumaal pERu and is in Saiva Canon 1.55. The place is
in Thondai kingdom, the present Kanchipuram and Chingleput districts of Tamizh Nadu.
The place is on the train route between Kanchipuram - Arakkonam. The town is nowadays
called Tirumalpur.

The puranic story attributed to Tiruveezhimizhalai, about Vishnu receiving
disc from Siva is also told of this place, with a difference. That is, Vishnu found
His disc becoming blunt, after killing Dhadhisi, came to Siva for puja with lotus
flowers. During puja, one lotus was short, and He placed His eye in lieu
of lotus.  Siva then offered a sharp discus to Vishnu.

Siva -  Maal Vanangeeswarar

Uma -  Karunai Nayaki.

Holy Waters -  PalaaRu.

Holy Tree - Bhllva Tree.

The devas pray and do pujas here, with big flowers (lotuses) and seek refuge.
Vishnu also  did such puja to you here in TirumaaRpeRu, O Lord with blue mark on your
throat.

Arunachala Siva.

The following verse and Padigam has been composed and sung in Tiruth thONipuram,
another name for Sirkaazhi.  For details of location of the temple, Siva's name,
Uma's name, holy tree and holy waters, please refer under the verse on Sirkaazhi.

The Padigam is in Saiva Canon 1.60.

The Padigam has been composed in Nayaki Nayakan Bhavam.

The following verse and the Padigam, has been composed and sung by
Tiru Jnana Sambandhar on Siva in the temple of Tiuch chengattankudi.
The place is also Ganapatheeswaram. It is in Saiva Canon 1.61.

When Ganapathy killed Gajamukhan, a demon, the place was flooded with
the demon's blood. Ganapathy prayed to Siva for forgiving the sin. Hence
the place came to be called Ganapatheeswaram. Since there was blood all
over the place, it also came to be called Chengattankudi.  Blood is red in color,
the 'chem' in Tamizh, hence Chengattankudi, the jungle of blood.

The temple is in Nagappattinam district, near Nannilam.  One can reach
by bus from Tiruvarur.

Siruthondar, a devotee was in the practice of feeding a Saiva devotee
every day before his meal. Once, late in the morning, while he was still
not finding a devotee, he was anxiously waiting for a guest, a Bhairagi
appeared near him and told him that he would eat in his house only when
meal was prepared with human flesh of a young boy not yet married!
Siruthondar agreed. But not finding a boy of devotee's description, he
decided to cut his own son, Seeralan, for preparing meal of human flesh.
His wife readily agreed and the young son also consented. The meal was
accordingly prepared.  The Bhairagi sat for food and he called for the boy
to sit with him. The couple said - 'he will not be useful to his company. The
Bhairagi, then called for the boy, 'Seerala, please come!' The boy came from
the backyard alive, heeding the call!! The food made with human flesh also
was not to be seen!

The Bhairagi had in the meantime, disappeared.  Siva, Uma and Skanda
appeared and said: We are immensely pleased with your devotion to Siva
devotees, and then took them to their Abode!

The story is indicated in the verse.

Skanda also appeared because not only the couple, but their son also
was very much involved in the sacrifice.

Saint Pattinathaar sings about Siruthondar:

I am not capable of cutting my own son with sword and feed You!
Nor can I, just because my wife said as a  swearing, 'do not touch me hereafter!'
refrain from doing so (in the story of Tiruneelakanda Nayanar, the potter* ....
how can I attain your feet, O Ekambara of Kanchipuram....?

*It is again an interesting story of another Saiva Saint - Tiru Neelakanta Nayanar -
who was a potter. I shall post the story soon, if possible.

Siva - Ganapatheeswarar.

Uma- Tiruk kuzhal nanmaadhu ammai.

Holy Tree - Athi Tree.

Holy Waters - Soorya Tirtham.

I searched without success, my story of TIRUNEELAKANTA NAYANAR under my serial
post on 63 Saiva Saints.  However I am giving here a brief account:

Tiruneelakanta, who was a potter, was living a peaceful life with his wife. He was
making and selling mud pots and also occasionally begging bowls and water pots,
-kamandalus - for sannyasis.  He went out for some work one day and while returning
at night, there were heavy rains and so he had to rest at the outer portal of a house. It
was a courtesan's house. The lady came out to spit the red residue after munching
betel leaves and nuts.  Without seeing Tiruneelakanta, she spat and the dirt fell
on Nayanar in the portal.  She apologized and asked him to come inside and have
a wash. Tiruneelakanta accordingly went inside and had a bath. The courtesan
applied some fragrant paste on him.  The rains stopped and he came home.

His wife saw him having the pleasant smell of fragrance and she doubted him
thinking that he had physical pleasures with a woman. When asked, he wanted
to promise her about his innocence and so he wanted to touch her palm for
promise. She withdrew shouting Tiruneelakantam thrice and told him not to
touch her. Tiruneelakanta accordingly withdrew.

They lived as man and wife without touching each other. Years rolled and
both became old without any children. At this time, Siva came as an old
sannyasi and told the potter to keep his old  begging bowl safe and went for
bath in the river nearby. By the time he returned, the bowl was missing. The
potter could not return the bowl when he asked.  He promised a new bowl
but the old sannyasi was not happy. He asked the potter and his wife to come
and holding their hands to drown in the tank and get up. The couple hesitated
to touch each other and so they held a stick, and each holding one side, drowned
in the tank. When they came out, they were holding each others hands and the
stick had disappeared. Further, they also had become young, regaining all the
lost years!

Siva appeared and blessed them to live long and come to His Abode at the end.

***

Periya  Puranam says that the potter actually committed the sin but that was
due to an accidental fate.  But the story is also in vogue as stated ABOVE.

Sundaramurthi Nayanar sings in Tiruthonda thokai:

தில்லைவாழ் அந்தணர்தம் அடியார்க்கும் அடியேன்

திருநீல கண்டத்துக் குயவனார்க் கடியேன்
===========================

***

Can anyone tell me how to trace one's own old post, by merely knowing the
name of the topic and the classification like say, General Post...?

Can any one post verse of Saint pattinathaar, "vaaLal magavu arinthu
ootta vallen allen, maadhu uraitha chhoLaal iLamai thuRakka vallen allen...
in Tamizh original?

Arunachala Siva.

The following verse and the Padigam has been composed and sung by Jnana
Sambandhar on Siva of Tiruk kOLili, a temple, on near Tiruvarur.  This place
is also called Tiruk kuvaLai nowadays. One can reach the temple by bus from Tiruvarur.

kOL means planets, navagrahas.  The navagrahas are said to have prayed to Siva
here.

This is one of the seven places of different dances of Siva.  Here, the dance is
called, avani dance, avani vitangam.

Siva - Bramapureeswarar.

Uma - vaNdar poonkuzhali ammai.

Holy Tree  - TheRRa tree.

Holy Waters - Chandra tirtham.

This is the place where Sundaramurthi Swami asked the Siva ganas to take
the paddy bags given by Kundaik Kizhaar, and place them in Tiruvarur.

This is in Saiva Canon 1.62.

He made a Sivalingam with the sands of riverbed and performed abhishekam
with milk.  When his father came and angrily kicked the Lingam, he punished
him with his stick.* Siva appeared before the boy and said, 'He will be called
Chandikeswara and be the guardian angel of my temples and he will have my
flowers and food (that which have been eaten by me and left over).** That
Siva stays inthe temple of KOLili.

* The boy's father was one Echa Datta Sarman. Seeing his son wasting the  milk of cows,
which he had taken for grazing, he kicked the son. The boy took the sick and
hit his father's leg. The father's leg was cut off, though only a stick was used.
The stick had become a sword.

** Siva appeared before the boy and took him to His Abode saying, 'He will be
called Chandikeswara henceforth and he will be the guardian angel og my temples.
He will wear the flowers I have worn and discarded and he will eat the food left over
by me, and wear the clothes used by me.'

Chandikeswara is one of the 63 Saiva Saints. He can be seen along with other
saints in Siva temples and there is also a separate shrine for him in all Siva temples.

Though the saint poet mentions the story of Chandikeswara here, the young boy
was not born in this place.

Saint Sekkizhar sings Siva's declaration beautifully:***

This is how Sekkizhar describes Siva's declaration and Chandikeswara's glory
in Periya Puranam;

He, the Lord of devas, made him the Chief of His devotees. He declared:
He will eat the food I have taken (Siva nirmalyam; Siva prasadam). He will
adorn the clothes that I have used and wear the flowers, I have worn. He
then garlanded him with konRai garland that He had on His locks along with
crescent moon.

This is a cross reference to Reply 97, on Tiruchgattankudi:

It is Pattinathaar and NOT Saint Ramalinga Swami.

It comes under Tiru Kacchi Agaval, a verse on Kalahasti Siva.

I am not capable of cutting my son (and make food of human flesh) and feed you.
I am not capable of losing all my young years, due to the lady swearing (not to touch me).
I am not capable of doing service and in six days go to the extent of plucking my eye
and fix it (on your face).
How can I become your ardent devotee (and attain Sivapadam), O Father in Kalahasti?

Arunachala Siva.

The following verse and the Padigam has been composed and sung by Jnana
Sambandhar on Siva of ChaNpai Nagar. This is another name for Sirkazhi.
The Padigam is in Saiva Canon 1.66.

The names of Siva and Uma in the temple, the holy tree, the holy waters,
location of the place - have all been given under Sirkazhi in the the related
Padigam.

He, who has got dark spot of poison in  His throat, burnt Manmatha, who was having a flag of Makara fish, to ashes, but He graced his wife, by making him visible only her eyes.
He is in ChaNpai Nagar, where the birds thaara, swan, and anril, pray to Him, and which
is rich with trees like thakara, punnai, and thazhai flourish.

Arunachala Siva.
