Saint Manikkavachagar's Guru Puja Day - 2.07.2014.
« on: July 02, 2014, 04:47:12 PM »
Today is Saint Manikkavachagar's Guru Puja Day.  This is on Aaani (Jyeshta) month, Magha (magam) star day.  It is
observed in all Saivite Maths and also in temples like Tiruperundurai, Uttarakosa Mangai, Chidambaram etc.,

Once on a morning Sri Bhagavan was unusually calm not talking a single word to devotees.  His face and body
was shining brilliantly.  No one knew the reason.

In the evening before sunset, He started talking to devotees. When asked for His silence, He replied:  Today is
Saint Manikkavachagar's Guru Puja Day.  I was contemplating on that saint who was a Great Siva Bhakta.  He
merged with Siva as a Light on this day in Chidambaram temple.  He then shed copious tears!

Today in Chidambaram, the utsava moorthi comes out in Bhikshatanar alankaram in the evening on a silver horse
for street procession.  He is followed by the moorthi of Saint Manikkavachagar, in a palanquin.

The following verse (Ananda Malai) speaks about the turning point in the life of Saint Manikkavachagar.  Siva (as horses seller)
came on behalf of the saint and said to the Pandya King, that He has brought the horses.  They were actually jackals,
converted as horses.  The King received them cheerfully and thanked the horse seller.  At night in the stable, the horses
became the jackals again, broke open the stable and ran into the streets of Madurai.  The king got angry and he again
imprisoned the saint.  Then Siva has to create floods in Madurai and He came as a small boy, to throw sand on the banks
to stop the floods.  The rest of the story is known to you all.
