Dear Ravi and Nagaraj,
I am happy that Ravi is trying to translate the poem in a better way.
Here is Smt. Kanakammal's translation:
1. Strive and roll out the tasty appalam of the experience of janana. Eat that appalam of experience thus fashioned.
Enjoy and fulfill thus your insatiable longing for it.
2. Instead of roaming around in the wide world yearning for happiness and satisfaction, follow the true, unspoken,
uequalled and incomparable upadesa in the language of silence of the Sad guru, who is the very embodiment of the
bliss of the experience of the Atman. Roll out the appalam, savor the experience and see.
3. In this body called kshetram, consisting of five sheaths of non self, take the grain of black gram of the ego self that
with loving attachment looks upon the body as the Self. Feed it in the quern of the wisdom of inquiry Who am I? With
the depth of knowledge gained by the inquiry 'I am not the body', break it apart as body and jiva crushing it into the fine
flour with no chance of the jivabhava reviving itself afresh, roll out the appalam and savor the experience and see.
4. Mixing the flour thus powdered, with pirandai juice, (vetis setosa), which is the company of holy men, the realized beings,
cummin seed of mind control (sama), pepper of sense restraint (dama), the salt of non attachment (uparati, and the flavor of
asafoetida of auspicious inclinations of the mind (life Self Inquiry), earned by merit of previous births, roll out the appalam and
savor it.
5. In the stone mortar of human heart devoid of the slightest softness, with the pestle of the inward turned by the least
agitated mind, pound relentlessly as 'I' 'I' with the rolling pin ever of the nature of Peace on the level plank of equanimity of
mind unceasingly, untiringly ever but cheerfully roll out the appalam and enjoy it.
6. In the frying pan of the Absolute Silence of infinite Space -- the chinmudra signifying the non mediated experience of the
Atman in the pure ghee of immaculate Brahman, heated by the fire of knowledge, 'I am that Brahman' , that burns up
ignorance, deep fry forever and be transformed as That, the Self enjoying Itself as Self. Roll out the appalam and savor the
experience.
Arunachala Siva.
