punarvasu vaNNam
« on: March 21, 2013, 08:36:25 AM »

Today is the punarvasu star day of the Tamizh month of Panguni. (phalgun).  Sri Bhagavan was born on punarvasu star day of the
Tamizh month of Margazhi. (dhanur).  Every month, punarvasu star day is observed in the Asramam with special pujas to Sri
Ramaneswara Mahalingam, with adornment of golden casket. Sri Muruganar has composed ten verses on the glory of punarvasu
(punarvasu vaNNam) in Sri Ramana Sannidhi Murai.

Today we shall see two verses from another work Tiru ThoL Nokkam - 'aiming at the shoulders' i.e looking at the shoulders of
Sri Bhagavan.

The name comes from an ancient girls' game. The game ends by the playing girls placing their hands on the opposite girls' shoulders.
The song accompanying the game is used as a symbol of the approach of the soul towards Siva.  Saint Manikkavachagar has also
composed ten verses on the same title.

Sri Ramana Sannidhi Murai, Verse 1582:

Oft from your devotees we have heard,
And now with our own eyes we see,
How you are the eternal ground of all that is.
Such, such is your sustaining power, and
As we sing of this, your power, we
Maidens play the shoulder game.

Verse 1583.

The bliss of being the Self, experienced
Rarely even by Vishnu and Brahma,
You, Venkata, reveal at once
Because your Being is all Awareness.
Seeing this transcendent state, we
Maidens play the shoulder game.

(Tr. Prof. K. Swaminathan.)
