108 Sri Vaishnava Holy Temples
« on: February 21, 2013, 05:11:26 PM »
Dear Alll

I wrote about lesser known Siva temples in David Godaman's blog. Here today being Bhishma Ekadasi, (the day when Bhishma
in his bed of arrows narrated the 1008 holy names of Vishnu to Pandavas and Krishna standing beside them), I thought I could
start posting about 108 Sri Vaishnava Holy Temples.

The 1st one is Naimisaranyam. Vishnu is called Devarajan and Mother is called Pundarika valli.  The temple tree is called Tapovanam.

The place is on the route of Dehradun to Uttara Pradesh.

Unfortunately the temple and the idols are not now there. Hence it is said that devotees should pray only to the jungle as the
form of Vishnu and Mother. On the banks of Gomathi River, there is statue of Hanuman holding on his shoulders Rama and Lakshmana.
One can visit this statue.

Vyasa, Suka, and other Rishis are said to have written the epics from here only. The holy water is called Chakra tirtham, a tank.
Here there are statues of Rama, Lakhmana, Sudarsana, and Vinayaka. One can take bath in this chakra tirtrham and pray to these
statues.

In the 4000 Holy Songs, Tirumangai Azhwar mentions this in his Periya Tirumozhi 1.6.9.

2. Ayodhya:

The controversial place / temple is with deep woods on both sides. On the mornings one can take bath in Sarayu river. Then one
can see the famous Valmiki Bhavan, where the entire Sri Ramayanam, have been written with pictures, on marble walls. Then one
can go to the place now called Rama Janma Bhoomi. There is long single file queue and one has to move with military safeguarding the
place standing on both sides of the queue. One can see Sri Rama as a child in makeshift shed. One can have some satisfaction by
visiting Dasratha Mahal a large mantapam where Rama, Lakshmana and Sita along with Hanuman statues are installed. Then there is also
a place which is called the private room for Rama and Sita sleeping at night.   Here again, there is military protection.  Here they give
curd bath in packets as prasad.  There are choultries run by Nattukottai Chettiars, Gujaratis and Uttar Pradesh Government, where
they give sumptuous food at concessional rates.

After some distance is Nandigram, where one can see the marble statutes of Hanuman and Bharata.  Near the Sarayu river on the hill,
there is also a temple for Rama. Here they sell dry fruits, cashew nuts, tumeric powder, kumkum, bangles and honey.

The deities are (in Dasratha Mahal) Sri Rama and Sita Devi.

The holy waters are Sarayu River.

It is about 8 hours travel from Naimisaranyam.

Periyazhwar in Periya Tirumozhi has sung this temple, 3.9.6.

Kulasekhara Azhwar in Perumal Tirumozhi 10-1

Nammazhwar in Tiruvoimozhi 7.5.1.

3. Mukti Nath (Sri Chalagramam)

After taking bath in Sarayu river, one has to reach  Sonali. Here the devotees have to cross Nepal border. So they have to
exchange Indian currency and take Nepali currency for expenses.  After staying here in one night, in he early morning one has
to reach a town called Bokra, by bus. It takes about 8 hours by bus since the roads are in the mountain range with a small pathway
for buses. There one can buy socks, shoes etc., to bear the cold.  Here there are a number of caves. The calcium deposits are stuck
in the walls of the caves. In this town there are temples for Pasupathi Nath (Siva) and Krishaa., From Bokra one has to travel by
flight and due to high velocity of wind, planes are allowed only between 10 am to 2 pm. One has to take one of these flights and along
the Annapoorna Ranges of mountains, one has to reach a place called Jossam, From Jossam one has to travel on horseback on the
sides of Kandaki river (where Chalagramam are available,). One can pick up these stones from the ice cold water of the river. During
horseback travel, one has to be carerfull  and hold the reins and also keep the legs on the sides stirrup tightly. After some jerky
travel, one can reach the small temple. This is Mukti Nath temple, Mukti Naryana and Lakshmi are the main deities. There are idols for
Siva, Santhoshi matha and Lalita Tripura Sundari.  One can also see Jwalamukhi - a fire that is burning always/

We have to come back by horseback and then catch the plane and reach Bokra., From Bokra one can reach Delhi back.

The main deities: Sri Moorthi or Mukti Narayana and Sri Devi or Lakshmi.

Holy waters: Chakra tirtham and Kandkaki river.

Tirumangai Ahwar mentions this temple in Periya Tirumozhi 1.5.1.

4. Devaprayag:

We traveled by bus after early morning coffee, keeping only some dress and money and other essentials. The bus started at
4.30 am. It reached Deva Prayag at 8.30 am. The route is via Hrishikesh.  Here, Alaknanda and Bhagirathi merge into one river,
as Ganga. In this confluence of the two rivers, we took our bath. The water was quite chill and we had to shiver only taking bath.
Near the river, by ascending some steps we reached a temple of Sri Rama, who is called Raghunathji and Sita. There are also idols for
Annapoorani, Hanuman and Narasimhar.  The place is about 1,700 feet over the sea level. There is only hanging bridge across
Alaknanda and one has to go only through this bridge. There is a small town on the other side.

Rama is called Neelamegha Perumal and Mother is called Pundarika valli. The holy waters are river Ganga.

Periyazhwar in his Periyazhwar Tirumozhi has sung about this temple in 4.7.10.

5. Jyotir Math:

This is on the way to Badrinath. One has to alight here from the bus and after some time catch the same bus or a different bus
and reach Badrinath.

If you start from Delhi at 4. am. Jyotir Math can be reached by 4 am. On the sides of the road, there are steps that take you to
a Cave. Here Adisankara is said to have done penance.  There are idols for Adisankara, Siva, Parvati, Vasudeva and Lakshmi.

Vishnu and Lakshmi are called Parama Purusha, and Parimala Valli.  The holy waters are Indra tirtham and Govardhana tirtham.

7. Tiruk koodal:

Leaving the icy Himalayan areas, we come to hot Madurai in Tamizh Nadu. This temple is near the central bus stand inside the city
of Madurai.

The idol of Mahavishnu is named koodalazhagar. Mother is called Maragatha Valli or Madhura Valli.

The holy waters are a tank called Chakra Tirtham and also Vaigai River.

There are separate shrines for Andal, Sri Sudarsana Perumal (the disc of Mahavishnu)

If one goes to the first floor of the temple, one can have darshan of Satyanarayana and Mahavishnu in the Yoga Nidra (lying down)
posture.

Tirumangai Azhwar has praised this temple in Periya Tirumozhi 1.3.1.
Tirumazhisai Azhwar ha also praised this temple in one of his decad.

In the walls of the temple, color paintings are  seen describing Andal's story.

Dosas are given as prasadam.

9. Tirumohur:

This is from Madurai on the way of Melur, very close to Vadavur, birthplace of Maniikkavachagar.  There are several buses
available from Madurai.  The distance is only 15 kms.

Mahavishnu is called KALamegha Perumal. KALamegham is the dark rain cloud. Since Maha Vishnu has that hue, He is so called.
Mother is called Mohana Valli.  The holy waters are pushkarani, a tank.

There are separate shrines for Andal also. There is also a Maha Vishnu stone idol in Yoga Nidra, sleeping posture.

Nammazhwar has sung this temple in two of verses in Tiruvoimozhi, (10.1.10.)   Tirumangai Azhwar has also composed two decads on the temple.

11. Srivilliputtur.

This is the birth place of Andal. She was the foster child of Periyazwar who found the child under a tulsi plant.   The town is from
Madurai via Virudhunagar.  Andal wanted to marry Ranganatha and requested her father to take her to Sri Rangam. There she [
prayed to Ranganatha and merged with Him.

The temple tower of Srivilliputtur is the tallest one and it is the symbol of Tamizh Nadu Government.   The festival called Aadi Pooram
is famous.  It is the star in which she was born.

The Mahavishnu is called Vadapadra Sayee or Rangamannar. Mother is called Andal. The holy waters are a tank called tirumukkulam.

Andal has has written a Pasuram called Nachiyar Tirumozhi with 143 verses.  Periuyazhwar has composed one Pasuram, under
Periyazwhar Tirumozhi, 2.2.5.
