Consciousness In Terms Of Brain Death People
« on: February 15, 2013, 01:17:52 PM »
Medical science argues that a permanent cessation of electrical activity indicates the end of consciousness. Those who view the neo-cortex of the brain as solely responsible for consciousness, however, argue that electrical activity should be the only consideration when defining death. In many cases, especially when elevated intracranial pressure prevents blood flow into the brain, the entire brain is nonfunctional; however, some injuries may affect only the neo-cortex. During the death process, brain function can be lost gradually. When going through such a change, a small proportion of subjects have reported a variety of "near-death experiences".

As for my understanding based on Vedantha,, mind and brain are just instruments. Mind is like a data card with storage capacity in terms of Mega Bytes/Kilo Bytes. After certain limit, we are unable to memorize and register verses or slokas. Brain , which is a processor for recalling and analysing data is also another instrument. The consciousness, we get thru mind and brain is derived from Pure Consciousness or Awareness .

Life is defined as Prana, the vital air.The first thing we do  at the time of birth is to breathe in and the last thing we do at the time of death is to breathe out .What comes in and goes out is Prana. This may be aided by a  medical ventilator. Pure Consciousness is eternal and never dying source of energy. Obviously, why coma patients  are kept with ventilator support is that, consciousness of mind/brain may revive with the stimulation of Pure Consciousness , although external stimuli has become futile due to damage of the brain . Miracles like bringing back to life from the dead, is performed by saints by invoking the Pure Cosciousnes.
