Punarvasu VaNNam:
« on: January 26, 2013, 09:01:41 AM »

Today is the Punarvasu Star day, in the month of Makara. This is the star on the day of which Sri Bhagavan was born, but, in
the month of Margazhi, Dhanur. The Asramam celebrates the punarvasu star day of every month with special pujas to Sri
Ramaneswara Mahalingam, with oblations and adornment of golden casket.  Punarvasu is a gold colored star.

Muruganar has composed a poem called Punarvasu VaNNam (the glory of punarvasu) and this can be seen in Sri Ramana Sannidhi
Murai.

I shall give in this context, some translations from Guru Vachaka Kovai of Muruganar.

Destruction of Mind:

913. Unsteady and wavering minds find only
        Failure and frustration always.

914. The restless mind moves with a speed
That shames the God of Wind . To starve it,
So that it, like a cripple, stays
        Totally immobile is to attain
        Actual Immortality.

915. It is true wisdom to pluck out
Before they grow too strong the weeds
Of lust and anger and greed, and keep
The mind serene and self contained
Like a vast ocean deep and calm
        Untroubled by a single ripple
        Raised by any wind.

918.  He who has vanquished thought, he only
Sits like an emperor on the neck
         Of the  majestic elephant, Jnana,
Know for certain that the mind's
Movements alone give rise to birth
And every cruel pain and sorrow.

920.   Even as the ego does not die
Unless the Self's  glance falls on it,
The painful dream of this phenomenal
          World will never disappear
Unless the mind meets glorious death.

Today is also the full moon day, when the Asramam and Arunachala will be crowded with more people.

This morning I could give only verses from Guru Vachaka Kovai for this punarvasu day. (trans: Prof. Swaminathan)

Now I am  giving two beautiful verses from Sri Ramana Sannidhi Murai, Tirupadam kaNda thiRan: The benefit of seeing
the divine feet of Sri Bhagavan:

Seeing the Sacred Feet:

406.

Lord whose star is Ardhra, Master of Vedas,
Who brought as bright experience to my heart
The truth the Ancient taught, he made me
His own out of sheer kindness. This
Quick, mercurial magic, this transforming
Glory manifest in broad daylight, I witnessed!

(Tamizh original starts as -  Adiraiyin naLanai anubhavama vedanta....)

410.

I know and I, beside myself,
Bowed low, and worshipped what I saw;
The Plane of Siva, which is Pure
Blissful Awareness sweet to taste,
The Guru's Plane, which with the wealth
Of Self enriches all beholders,
The all transcending Hill of radiance
Beyond the reach of human speech, I witnessed !

(Tamizh verse starts as - parisevakum pahara voNNap paramjyoti parup padhathai...)

411.

The highest heaven of pure Awareness
From which there is no return,
The rare beatitude extolled
By the ultimate sacred word as far
Beyond thought or rich of dark, deluded
Mind, Kaivalya grand, the state
Of Brahman, this, even this I witnessed!

(Tamizh verse starts as - tirumbudhal illatha param dhama oLich chiRparamAha....)
