Lalita Tripura Sundari
« on: November 23, 2012, 04:10:36 AM »
Why is Devi called by this name?
I think Lalita means She who plays, Tripura means three cities and Sundari means beauty.
So the meaning should be something like the beautiful lady who plays in the three cities.
But what are those three cities?

Dear Jyoti,

Tripura can mean here the three impurities, ego, karma and maya; or waking, dream and dreamless states.

Arunachala Siva.

Yes. Tripura is often interpreted as 3 Shariras - Sthoola, Sookshma and Karana shariras. hence the story of Tripua Dahanam - where Bhagawan burns down all the 3 cities and saves the SELF.

Of course, it is Devi (Maya) who plays and dances in these 3 cities - 3 Shariras.

Dear sanjay-ganesh,

Yes. This could also mean gross, subtle and causal bodies. I answered based in Tirumoolar: Muppuram Avathu mummalam aRuthal.....

So Lalita Devi is the divinity who creates ego, karma and maya/the waking, dreaming and dreamless states and joyfully plays with them while She Herself is beyond them?

Dear Jyoti,

Yes, She is definitely beyond them. She is the Creator. But she is beyond all that she creates. I am a doll maker. Am I not
beyond the doll?

Arunachala Siva.

not only she is beyond, she is all of this creation itself.  She is non different.

she has created food a combination of five elements.  later she became the food,  also the eater.

when hunger and famine and drought are created by her maya,  all the food bodies suffer from hunger and starvation.  thse food bodies are also verily lalitha para shakthi only.

that is the paradox,  she is beyond and also she is all this creation and all pheonmena.

one who worships her in bhakthi marga will get this jnana automatically one day.

Dear Krishnan,

Yes. She and Sadasiva are concorporate. She is Sadasiva kutumbini. She is the manifesting power of Brahman or Sivam
That is why Saivites keep both Siva and Uma together for worship. In the Linga pettam, the peetam is representivative
of Lalita or Sakti.

Like Brahman or Sivam, she is in all things in the universe and is also beyond it.

Arunachala Siva.
