Dear Ivac,
om contains the three sacred sounds A, U and M. They refer to the three main states of the mind - wakefullness, dream and sleep. Om is the one-syllable Brahman. Om and God are not different. Om is the creative power within everythin. That's why almost all mantras begin with Om. It is always advisable to chant Om mentally or orally whenever and wherever you can. This sacred syllable is in the centre of all Vedantic literature!

AUM is Pranava Mantra. There are Upanishads just dedicated for AUM. I think Mandukyopanishad talks about Pranava Mantra and Pranava Upasana in depth and many others.

AUM when chanted long ends in Amatra - meaning Sat-chid-ananda in other words. Starts with open sound and ends with a soundless state. No other mantra has this. Upanishads ecen proclaim that just by chanting AUM one can unveil Supreme

Dear sanjaya-ganesh.

Yes. Maandukya Upanishad describes the three states of life, waking, dream and deep sleep, and the fourth state,  Turiuya.
Om ie A U AND M correspond to each state. The fourth one     Tuirya is the end of AUM where, M produces the sound and then
there is only silence.

the vEdAs and upanishads speak about Om in several places. Here is one, from taittirIya upanishad.

             Omiti brahma .

OmityEtadanukRutirhasma vA apyO shrAvayEtyAshrAvayanti .
Omiti sAmAni gAyanti .

Omittyadhvaryuh pratigaram pratirgRuNAti .
Omiti brahmA prasauti .
OmityagnihOtramanujAnAti .
Omiti brAhmaNah pravkShyannAha brahmOpnavAnIti .
brahmaivApnOti ..

OM is the Eternal, OM is all this universe. OM is the syllable of assent: saying, OM ! let us hear,' they begin the citation. With OM they sing the hymns of the Sama; with OM SHOM they pronounce the Shastra. With OM the priest officiating at the sacrifice says the response. With OM Brahma begins creation. With OM one sanctions the burnt offering. With OM the Brahmin ere he expound the Knowledge, cries "May I attain the Eternal." The Eternal verily he attains.

Dear Nagaraj,

Very Nice. Sri Bhagavan says in Talks. 215:

                                Iswara               Jiva
                               Universal           Individual

Gross                       Universe            Body

Subtle                  Sound and Light  Mind and
                              Nada & Bindu     Prana

Primal                     Self                      Self (Atma)
                           Param                    Param
                        Transcendental        Transcendental

Sri Bhagavan had added: Subtle body of the Creator is the mystic sound Pranava (OM), which is sound and light.
The Universe resolves into sound and light and then into transcendence, Param.

Dear Sir,

yes, Om is everything. the vEdAS begin with Om, aspire only to provide some light on the praNavA. There is so much mystic about Om.

Here is another from mahA nArAyanA upanishad:

ओं तद् ब्रह्म । ओं तद्वायुः । ओं तदात्मा । ओं तद् सत्यं । ओं तत्सर्वं । ओं तत्पुरोर्नमः ॥

Om tad brahma .
Om tadvAyuh .
Om tadAtmA .
Om tad satyam .
Om tatsarvam .
Om tatpurOrnamah ..

Om is that brahman
Om is vAyu
Om is the Self
Om is that truth
Om is all
Om is all that multitudes
Salutations to Om
