8 DhyAnam - Procedure
« Reply #15 on: December 05, 2012, 11:03:23 AM »
8. DhyAnam

॥ ध्यानम् ॥

Chant the following mentally, meditating the form of gAyathrI mAthA as described in the shlokA:

मुक्ताविद्रुमहेमनीलधवलच्छायैः मुखैः त्रीक्षणैः
युक्तामिन्दुनिबद्धरत्नमुकुटां तत्वार्थवर्णात्मिकाम् ।
गायत्री वरदाभयाङ्कुशकशाः शुभ्रं कपालं गदां
शङ्खं चक्रमथारविन्दुयुगलं हस्तैर्वहन्तीं भजे ॥

mukthAvidrumanIlaDhavalacCAyaih muKhaih thrIkShaNaih
yukthAmindu nibadhDharathnamukutAm thathvArthavarNAthmikAm .
gAyathrI vardABhayAm*kushakashAh shuBhram kapAlam gadhAm
shanKham cakramaThAravindhuyugalAm hasthairvahanthIm BhajE ..

* just be conscious that when you chant varadhABhayam, we chant aBhayam, but generally it is commonly observed that people chant as varada Bhayam, it becomes meaningless, aBhayam is fearlessness and whereas Bhayam is fear.

I meditate on gAyathrI who has five faces, one is red like coral, second is yellow like gold, third is blue like neelam, fourth white like milk, and the fifth is of ‘trinetra’ or three eyed. We meditate Her gem studded headgear with half- moon like jewel on Her Head, and eight hands with Benedictine mudras, ‘ankusham’, gadhA (mace), shanKham, cakram, Skull, and Two Lotuses.

The form in picture as described in the shlokA

यो देवस्सविताऽस्माकं धियो धर्मादि गोचराः ।
प्रेरयेत्तस्य यद्भर्गस्तद्वरेण्यमुपास्महे ॥

yO dhEvassavithAasmAkam DhiyO DharmAdhi gOcarAh .
prErayEththasya yadBhargastadhvarENyamupAsmahE ..

This is a prayer you say before embarking on the meditation of standard
gAyatrI. It is very nice one, which explains the goal of that meditation.

We meditate on the excellent light of the deva called SavitA who
directs our intellect towards the ways of dharma.

॥ पञ्चपूजा ॥

Gayatri Japa - Procedure
« Reply #16 on: December 14, 2012, 10:48:24 AM »
9. Gayatri Japa

Commence the Japa facing East in the morning and West in the evening, and East or North in the Noon as the time may be, if it is before 10:30 Am the usual practice is to face East and otherwise it is to be performed facing North.

Sringeri Swamigal has said in his talks that originally the japa count was 1008, but it has shrunk to 108, which has still been shrunk owing to lifestyles these days to 108, 32 and 64 morning, noon and evening respectively.

Elders usually advise at least to perform the sahasra japa on sundays which is auspicious for Sun and Gayatri Japa.

In the morning, one has to perform standing facing east and one has to cover ones fingers and keep it just before ones face (near nose) with uttareeya, or angavastra.

In the noon and evening one can perform the japa seated on mat. In the noon, one has to keep ones fingers just as above near the bosom, heart region and perform the count facing east or north as the case may be and in the evening, one has to keep ones fingers near the navel and perform the japa facing west.

i will present the methods of keeping the count of japa in the discussion in the days to come.

Om bhUrbhuvassuvah .
Om tat savitur varENyam
bhargO dEvasya dhImahi .
dhiyO yO nah pracOdayAt ..

At each line as give above, it would be effective if we can pause for a second and then commence with the next line, instead of just chanting it fast. The primary requisite for performance of Japa is PATIENCE. We will also see more on Japa in the discussion thread.

Ideally, if one can perform 108 counts at all the three sandyas, i.e., morning, noon and evening, it is best, the general practice is as follows:

Morning: 108 counts
Noon: 32 counts
Evening: 64 counts

Sarpa Raksha mantra - Procedure
« Reply #23 on: February 08, 2013, 03:42:51 PM »
Sarpa Raksha mantra

Narmadaayai namah praatah narmadaayai namo nishi
namoastu narmade tubhyam traahi maam vishasarpadah
sarpaapsarpa bhadran te gaccha sarpa mahavishah
janamejayasya yajnyante aastikavacaham smara
jaratkaarvojaratkarvaam samutpann mahaayashah
astika satyasandho maam pannagebhyoabhi rakshatu
pannagebhyoabhirakshatu nama on nama iti

The above mantra is chanted facing North, generally, this is chanted by the Vadama group, remembering the Narmada river, where from they really are. Vadama literally means from north. Also in this mantra is a prayer remembering the words of Sage Astika. Below i produce the meaning as it is from a website:

O Narmada, I offer you salutations in the morning & night (during sandhya vandana); Protect me from poisonous snakes
नर्मदायै = To Goddess (river) Narmada;नमः = my salutations; प्रातः = in the morning; निशि = during the night; नमोऽस्तु = I bow and give you my salutations; नर्मदे = Oh! Narmada; तुभ्यं = to you; त्राहि = Protect; मां = me; विषसर्पदः = from the poisonous snakes;
O virulent snake, recollecting the words of Astika at the end of King Janamejaya’s sacrifice, may you go away.
सर्पापसर्प – O snake (sarpa & asarpa), भद्रं त गच्छ – may you go away , सर्प महाविष – snake endowed with virulent poison जनमेजयस्य – Janamejaya, यज्ञान्ते – at the end of sacrifice, आस्तीकवचं – the words of Astika, स्मर – remind
Astika, born of muni Jaratkaru and his wife of the same name, was a great soul. He, the protector of the truth, will protect me from the serpents.

जरत्कार्वोर्जरत्कर्वां = Jaratkaru muni, and his wife who also has the name of Jaratkaru; समुत्पन्न = born महायशाः = of great renown; अस्तीक = Sage Astika; सत्यसन्धो = One bound to speak or defend the truth; मां = me; पन्नगेभ्यो = to or from serpents or snakes; अभिरक्षतु = Let one protect me.

Note: i will check if there is any corrections to be made in the above mantra, i am doubtful about the 3rd line specifically.

Udai garu/friends,
It may be useful to review this thread so devoutly put together by our friend Nagaraj in the context of the significance of the Gayatri mantra that udai had raised ...We shall open a fresh thread on the glory and significance of Gayatri and continue our discussion there.
Namaskar
