As the above shlOkA is chanted one has to gently tap above ones temples. The temples are located just above and outside the eyes, below the forehead and in front of or intersecting with your hairline.

(Right hand)

Fold the index finger and middle fingers. By closing the right nostril with the thumb, (pUrakA) inhale through the left nostril to the complete satisfaction of your lungs and close the left nostril with your ring finger and hold (kumbhakA) the breath, then, keep the right nostril closed with the thumb and exhale through the Right nostril by releasing the Thumb, keeping the left nostril closed with the Ring finger.

Standard ratio specified by AcAryA of sringEri for all is 1:2:2 however for advanced persons, the ratio will be higher, consult a yOgA teacher before any drastic change. Do not try hard, if you are not able to carry on with the ratio, effort has to be conducive to your body.

Various people and various books have mentioned different ways of employing the prANAyAmA while chanting the mantrA, however, the method i follow is as follows, having confirmed by a very learned scholar.

Inhale (pUrakA), completely to the satisfaction of your lungs. Should be equivalent to the proportional ratio (1:2:2) proportionally 1.

Hold your breath (kumbhakA) as you chant from Om bhUh . Om bhuvah ..... untill dhiyO yO nah pracOdayAt .. proportionally 2 (you may chant this twice, work your own way out)

Exhale (rEcakA) completely equivalent to the proportional ratio 2

(Chanting has to be completely mental, or else, you would not be able to perform prANAyAmA)

When you recite the OmApO jyOti rasO amRutam brahma bhUrbhuvassuvarOm, (can be chanted by mouth, as prANAyAmA, is concluded)
circumambulate your head with your fingers.

Note: Do not be too conscious of the ratio. Ratio is given only for guidance as to how to exercise prANAyAmA.

One may now relax in sukhAsanA now. If sitting in a squatting posture, until next AcamanA.

Clasp the right palm over the left palm, rested on the right thighs near the knee. This is actually a 'muda' for sankalpA resolve. These mudrAs too have their influence.

The Lord has said so in the gitA that if all the karmAs are dedicated to Him, then karmA will not be binding. So in the same spirit, this resolve is made that you are performing sandhyA for shrI paramEshvara prItyartham, ie. for the love of paramEshwarA or Supreme Self with a prayer that 'That' may bless you by destroying samasta durita kShayadvArA destroying all bad and negative vAsanAs within!

mArjanam - Procedure
« Reply #4 on: October 21, 2012, 11:11:56 AM »
5. mArjanam

mArjanA means cleansing. It is a purificatory discipline, this is primarily for internal cleansing. From here, vEdic mantrams begin. It is said that vEdas must not be muttered or chanted mentally, they ought to be uttered by mouth unabashedly, only then the vibrations of the mantrAs can become effective in the water.

(please refer http://www.arunachala-ramana.org/forum/index.php?topic=7188.msg31975#msg31975) We will see more in the discussion thread.

ओं श्री केशवाय नमः ॥

Om bhUrbhuvassuvah .

Take the udDharaNi (spoon) filled with water, in your left hand and with the right hand ring finger, write praNava mantra (ॐ) Om on the water, while chanting deeply in mouth the praNavA ॐ, then, chanting श्री केशवाय नमः (shrI kEshavAya namah) place the ring finger (still wet, having written the praNava) on भ्रुवोर्मध्ये (bhruvOrmadhyE) point between the eyebrows. Basically, it signifies or instructs to bring the attention to the inner eye, by meditating kEshavA (kEshavA is one who has locks of hair, ie., senses, mind thoughts, etc.)

After the above, true mArjanam begins ie., purification.

It is advisable to hold the udDharaNi (spoon) filled with water, near the bosom, as it will be convenient to carry out the instructions well of sprinkling water on the shiras or head one after the other.

For each of the sentences given below, one has to place the right hand ring finger on the water in the udDharaNi (spoon), then, sprinkle that water on the shiras or head upon conclusion of chanting each of the sentences from Apo hi ShTA mayO bhuvah...... through ApO janayathA ca nah.

Note:

When you come towards यस्यक्षया॑य॒ जिन्व॑थ (yasyakShayAya jinvatha) you have to sprinkle water on your feets, or, some touch the ring finger still wet on both the knees, which ever is practiced in ones tradition or ones own comfort.

then resume sprinkling water with ring finger on the shiras as usual for the last आपो॑ ज॒नय॑था च नः (ApO janayathA ca nah).

mArjanam (purification) concludes now.

Upon completion of mArjanam (purification), we are supposed to take yet another udDharaNi (spoon) filled with water and put it on the right hand palm, and let it flow through the fingers tips, as your right hand fingers circumambulate your head, chanting ओं भूर्भुव॒स्सुवः॑ (Om bhUrbhuvassuvah)

prAshanam - Procedure
« Reply #5 on: October 22, 2012, 12:13:56 PM »
6. prAshanam

This is yet again, a cleansing process. The word prAshanam has two meanings, one is casting, throwing forth and the other is feeding upon. In this case, it is with water that this kriyA is performed, hence it is commonly called as Apah prAshanam. Apah means water.

On has to take a spoonful (udDaraNi) of water and pour it on the cavity of ones right hand palm, then, the palm filled with water has to be brought near the face just below/before/near one's chin, and one has to look at the water intently and chant the below given mantrA directly at the water and consume the same at its conclusion.

Again, as a reminder, sipping or consuming water ought to be done without the lips touching the palm, one has to lift the palm so that the water flows towards the center of ones wrists and allow the water to flow through the lips.

For this step, one may take one or two spoonfuls of water in one's palm. The entire kriyA has to be done mindfully. Infact, one can even feel this water go in through the food pipe, its coolness, can be felt, and, when assimilated and consumed with little understanding makes tremendous impact.

punarmArjanam - Procedure
« Reply #6 on: October 24, 2012, 11:20:42 AM »
7. punarmArjanam

punar means 'again' mArjanam means cleansing. This step literally means cleansing again, especially after pRashanam, which is a very powerful cleansing process, requires yet another cleansing process, just to highlight yet again, that the Sages emphasize, how much of importance is given to cultivate purity in every aspect. The aspect of cleansing has been given high importance as we can see, there are 3 detailed steps with tantra kriyA (of sprinking water) as well. The essence has to be assimilated well. These mantrAs have power, the vibrations of these mantrAs impel and help us in cultivating the purity of mind, ie., thoughts and deeds. What cannot be achieved by mere effort can be achieved by grace, and, mantrA is a swarUpa (form) of the Supreme brahman. These steps if done mindfully, help us in our endeavor of developing purity as praised by the scriptures. We will see more in the discussion thread about the meanings.

As seen before in the mArjanam step, this is yet again, another succeeding cleansing process, only the first two lines are new, the rest of it are the same as the mArjanam, seen in the preceding step before prAshanam.

For each of the sentences given below, one has to place the right hand ring finger on the water in the udDharaNi (spoon), then, sprinkle that water on the shiras or head upon conclusion of chanting each of the sentences from dadhikrAvNNO akarSham...... through ApO janayathA ca nah.

arghya pradAnam - Procedure
« Reply #7 on: October 25, 2012, 04:31:45 PM »
8. arghyA pradAnam - oblation

          Om bhUrbhuvassuvah .
Om tat savitur varENyam
bhargO dEvasya dhImahi .
dhiyO yO nah pracOdayAt ..

Taking handful of water, and, upon sanctifying the water in hand by chanting the
gAyattI mantram as above on has to let the water flow down through the finger tips.
This is done thrice in the morning and evening and twice in the noon.

While performing the arghyA pradAnam in the morning, one has to stand on toes as
shown in the picture, and raise the hands filled with water upto one's head and let
out the water facing the EAST in the morning, facing WEST in the evening.

If mAdhyAhnnikam is performed relatively earlier to noon, then one has to face East
while performing arghya pradAnam (say upto 10:30 am) or else one has to face North
and perform at noon.

Note: Common practice is that only in the mornings one has to stand while offering
arghya, in the noon and evenings, people either squat or sit in sukhAsanA while offering
arghyA, but, this is not mentioned in any of the books. Therefore, those who can offer
arghya by standing may do so, that is how it has been mentioned. We will see more in
discussion thread in detail.

While offering arghya, one has to make sure that the thumbs are separated from the
remaining fingers.

prAyashchitta arghya pradAnam

When arghyapradAnam is not performed at the right time, then one has to sit in the sankalpa posture, given below by chanting the following resolve:

कालातीत-प्रायश्चित्त-अर्घ्यप्रदानं करिष्ये ॥

kAlAtIta-prAyashcitta-arghyapradAnam kariShyE ..

and then perform the arghya-pradAnam as described above upon chanting the gAyatrI mantram.

AtmapradakShiNam pariShEcanaM आत्मप्रदक्षिणं परिषेचनं

ओं भूर्भुवस्सुवः ।

Om bhUrbhuvassuvah .

saying the above mantram, one has to circumambulate ones own self around the head with water flowing down through the tips of the fingers, in the same place where one is standing after the performance of arghya pradAnam.

ऐक्यानुसन्धानम् - inquiry/contemplation on the grand truth of the oneness/harmony of the jIvAtmA and paramAtmA (individual and the Supreme Soul)

chanting the below given mantrA, praying to the effulgence of pure intelligence that is worshiped in the form of Sun, deeply engage in contemplation the mahAvAkyA "brahmaivAhamasmi" That brahman am I.

asAvAdityO brahma . brahmaivAhamasmi ..

meaning: That Sun(effulgence of pure intelligence) is the brahman . That brahman am I .

Commence dhyAnam (meditation). It is advised to spend few minutes at least on the conclusion of this step about the non-difference between the jIvAtmA and paramAtmA (anusandhAnam - inquiry). One may remember the teachings of Bhagavan, etc., as this steps is said to be the life line of sandhyA vandanam.

dEva tarpaNam - Procedure
« Reply #9 on: October 31, 2012, 04:29:57 PM »
10 dEvatarpaNam

tarpaNam, literally means to satiate, and dEva-tarpaNam means to satiate the various Gods in various forms. There are two parts herein. The first tarpaNam is offered to rulers of cosmic planets. These planets represent the various psychological planes within our intellect that hold us back or facilitate us in our endeavours. The ancient Sages, through this process of tarpaNam, satiate these 9 mental planes through water. We shall try to study very briefly in the discussion section. After satiating these 9 planets, we are obliged to express our gratitude the the Supreme truth, in the form of the 12 different names specially chosen by the Sages. (see: http://www.arunachala-ramana.org/forum/index.php?topic=7208.msg32657#msg32657) Hence it is called dEva tarpaNam.

Satiating these aspects means invoking their grace within us to guide us in our endeavor, our journney towards Truth alone, that they, at various instances may help us remain focused in our true purpose of this human birth that is mOkshA or mukti so that we may not get lost in something. As a mark of respect or gratitude and also as a mark of requesting these Gods to help us, we perform this tarpaNam and satiate (them) these aspects with water sanctified by utterances of holy names, attributed respectively. It is showing gratitude for where we are today, so long the journey has been good, the very fact that we are born has human being, itself is a proof that we have received grace at various instances, and in order to remember this, we offer water in the form of tarpaNam, and also as a mark of a prayer, requesting them to continue to guide us as helmsmen, leading as a Master in various mental planes, like ever before!

One has to perform this procedure simultaneously chanting the mantra (names) given below, facing east in the morning and north in the noon and evening. (If mAdhyAhnnikam is performed before 10:30 am, then this has to be performed facing east)

Some people pour water in a steady and continues stream, from the pancapAtram (tumbler) into the right hand palm, fingers pointing downwards towards the arghya pAtram, without any gaps in between fingers (water should not pass out in between the finger gaps), allow the water to flow out (without break in flow of water), through the tip of the fingers (especially through the little finger and ring finger tips) into the arghya pAtram.

I follow this method.

Or

Some people take enough handful of water and slowly allow the water to flow down through the finger tips into the arghya pAtram Simultaneously chanting the below given mantra names perform dEva tarpaNam.

Or

Some people are able to hold the panchapAtram (tumbler) in-between the left hand thumb and index finger and keep pouring water into the palm as you are offering the tarpaNam water, through the fingers, into arghya pAtram. See picture ---->:
