From Dinamalar

Puja

Every family must perform puja to Iswara. Those who find it convenient to do so may conduct elaborate types of puja after receiving proper initiation into them. Others need perform only a brief puja, not lasting more than ten minutes or so. Office goers must offer at least this brief worship. The sacred bell must ring in every home.

Images must be installed to worship Siva, Amba, Vishnu, Vinayaka, and Surya. This is called "panchayatna puja". According to one custom, no graven images (images with limbs) are used but instead natural objects to represent the five deities. The "bana-linga" for Siva is obtained from the Omkara -kunda of the Narmada river. The swarnamukhi stone for Ambika (it has a golden streak on it) is to be taken from the bed of the Swarnamukhi river in Andhra Pradesh. The symbol of Vishnu, salagrama, is obtained from the Gandaki river in Nepal. The crystal stone for Surya is got from Vallam, near Tanjavur. The sonabhadra stone for Vinayaka is obtained from the Sone river, a tributary of the Ganga. These five stones are symbolic of the unity of India.

None of these five stones has eyes, nose, ears, etc. Since they have no corners that become untidy, they are easy to bathe and dry. Being small they do not occupy much space. No big puja hall or room is necessary. A small casket is enough.

Panchayatna puja was revived by Sankara Bhagavatpada. As the creator of the Sanmata system (the worship of six deities), He added Subrahmanya to the five. So with the five stones we may add a small spear to represent Velayadah (Subrahmanya) who bears the spear.

Not much effort is needed for the puja. If you have the will, it could be performed wherever you happen to be.

At home when you do the puja you have to present to the deities cooked rice called "maha-naivedya". The Lord has created the entire cosmos for our sake. Our sense organs take delight in the various objects in creation. All that gives us joy, all that is beneficial in creation, must be offered to the Lord (symbolically) before being partaken of by us. When we offer any food as naivedya to Him, do we really give it away to Him? We just place it before Him and then partake of it ourselves.

Some ask, scornfully, whether the Lord himself eats what is offered to Him. "Nivedana" does not mean making the Lord really "eat" what is offered. He does not have to eat. Puja is meant to make us inwardly pure and the Lord does not have anything to gain from it. "Nivedayami" means ?I am making it know to you (informing you)" and does not mean "I am feeding you". You must speak thus to Iswara, "O Lord, in your compassion you have given us this food." Then you must eat the food thus offered, thinking of Him. Without His grace how does the rice grow? Experts may conduct research and write big tomes on rice. But are they capable of making one grain of rice? What is called synthetic rice is made out of materials already created by Iswara. So all that seems to be made of man must be finally traced to God's creation. To enjoy what he has given us without first presenting it to Him would be tantamount to thieving.

He who is present everywhere must be present where we want Him to be present so that He may be grasped by us. Whatever the material out of which His image of symbol is made-stone, earth, copper- he will come to us in that material and in that image or symbol. He will do so out of His compassion and He has the power to do so. We would have no need for him otherwise.

The Lord must be worshipped in every home. He must be invoked and it must be made known to Him that we are using nothing but what he has made over as a gift to us. If we keep doing so, we will in due course have the wisdom not to use in puja things not fit to be offered to Him. We ourselves will come to possess good qualities.

The Efficacy of Gayatri Mantra Japa

Once the Mysore State went dry without rains. Special worship was done as per the instructions from His Highness. The Acharya also instructed all the vedic scholars in the Math to do 1008 Gayatrl mantra japa every day. The exact amount of mantra iapa was reported to him daily. The purpose of the japa was not known to them but none dared to ask His Holiness. One day all of them were summoned and the acharya dealt at length on the greatness of Gayatri mantra. Next day onwards he went into ?antarmukha?. The japa touched one crore. Thus the Japa yajna was performed effortlessly! lt poured heavily and the prayer yielded rich results after two months of rigorous japa. Everywhere there was water!  whole State of Mysore looked like the asrama of Sage Rishyasrunga!

Ganesh Chaturthi comes falls on Mon 5 Sept 2016 this year and we all know Kanchi Paramacharya requested people to learn Tamil Saint AvaiYar's Vinayakar Aghaval but there is another elementary  work of Avaiyar in Tamil  titled "Athichudi" that we all learnt when we were young in schools but it is not as elementary as it seems because once when the great Intellectual Sri Raja Gopala Chari ( Rajaji ) came to meet Kanchi Paramacharya ( when Rajaji was too old and sort of retired from active Politics ) and he asked Paramacharya seeking "Jnanam" and Paramacharya asked Rajaji whether he knew "Athichoodi" and Rajajai replied he knows but cant remember it fully and Paramacharya told him that he will sing the Athichudi and if possible let Rajaji correct the same and Paramacharya did sing the Athi Chudi and Rajajai nodded his head and then Paramacharya told him that this "Athichudi" is enough for Rajaji to receive Jnanam and it is better he relearns it and follows it . Now here the Might Rajaji who was called as the greatest Intellectual was giving a simple "Athichudi" by Paramacharya as the best text  for Jnanam . The message is not just for Rajaji but for all of us .

Here is Athichdui in Tamil

NEED FOR GOD'S GRACEOUR DEITIES

But why do people wrangle saying that one deity is superior to the rest, that the deity whom they worship alone is the highest?

A bridge across a river has a number of arches To a man standing under one arch, all other arches will appear smaller than the one he stands under. This arch will appear biggest to his eyes. Even so, to a votary of a particular deity, all other deities will appear inferior.

But the truth is that deities are manifestations of the One God. All arches are similarly constructed and have the same dimension.

Mooka Panchashathi is a very important work that was recommended by Kanchi Mahaswamigal . Found the following link in a site dedicated to Kanchi Mahaswmaigal .It has access to download an old bashyam of this book in PDF format for free .Those interested can check out the links .

Mooka Panchashathi Bashyam from old Tamil book

https://mahaperiyavaa.blog/2017/02/12/mooka-panchashathi-bashyam-from-old-tamil-book/

Thanks to Sri Ganapathy for providing these links. I downloaded these documents ? they are true treasures?.It seems that these bashyam was done by Sri GV Ganesha Iyer, who has done similar work on Lalitha Sahasranamam and Soundarya Lahari. Great work. It seems that the first edition was in 1950s and the second edition was in 1965 or so and was sold for Rs 1.50!!!! I am not sure if Janardhana Printing Works, Kumbakonam still around as they seem to have the copyright. If they don?t exist, then this can be brought back in paperback edition too. Ram ? something you might want to consider!

Regardless, here are the links for all 5 parts?.

Arya Sathakam ? Stotras on Kamakshi (Stuthis)
Paadharavinda Sathakam ? Describes about Kamakshi?s paadharavindam
Manthasmitha Sathakam ? Kamakshi?s smile ?
Kataaksha Sathakam ?  Kamakshi?s Kataaksham
Stuthi Sathakam ? Stotras on Kamakshi (Stuthis)
Although I have heard about this greatness of Mooka Pancha Shathi, I never read this before. With this pdf made available, I think I will start reading soon?

Karma and Bhakti
When Sankara Bagawat Padal was about to leave his mortal coil, his disciples surrounded Him. They said, ?You gave a lot of advices to us about various things connected to Vedas and Teachings related to our religion. There are many things in them beyond our grasp and understanding. Please tell us something, easy for us to understand.?
He gave them a Sloka of five stanzas, called, ?Sopana Panchakam?.
?Follow the path as defined by the Vedas. Daily do the duties as delineated there-in, without let. Think this very action as an offering to God. Instead of going by only what is seemingly pleasing to your mind and heart, do all the duties, as your contribution for the welfare of the public and common man.? This is the idea with which Sopana Panchakam commences.
There are some people still living in this world, who do their allotted duties, as required by the Vedas. There are some who are doing Pooja with fervour. Some others can conduct a festival with organizational zeal. There could be some who could conduct a gathering with devotional songs. Those who conduct Pooja or Bhajan or festivals, look down on those who are strictly adhering to ?Karma Anushtana?, and say, ?What is the use of doing only Karma? If your heart is not melted to tears by devotion, what is the use?? Those who are following the Karma Path, look at the other experts in conduct of festivals and devotional activities, and say, ?They have no devotion to their duties. What is the use of all this pomp and show??
Acharyal in Sopana Panchakam tells us to do one?s duties itself as an offering to God. Duties as per Karma Anushtana are not to forgotten, neither is one to forget God! Do Sandhya Vandanam, Brahma Yagnam, Jyothish Homam, Tarpanam, if you were a Brahmin; do train yourself in battle crafts and fight your battles at the time of war, if you were a Kshatriya; do your trading and business, if you were a Vaisya; and do your duties of Agriculture or Carpentry or Pottery and so on, if you were the Soodra. But whether you were a Brahmin or Kshtriya or Vaisya or Soodra, do your allotted duties, with your mind riveted on God. That is the advice. But this is an exalted stage, not easily achieved. When we are involved in any work, attention to Divinity, will be or could be forgotten. So Karma and Bhakti, both are required. Over a period, both may fruition in to oneness. That is, someone may totally involve in Karma with his mind riveted on God or someone else may so get involved in Bhakti, that he may forget all other duties. He or she reaches a stage of, ?Krta Krtya?, ie, ?one who has no more duties to perform?!
Let it be set aside. If we look at the initial stages. Will God be pleased with someone who does duties or display much devotion? Say there is a rich man employing many servants. Amongst the servants, there is one who simply does his duties, and another who is all the time praising that rich man. Unless the rich man is an idiot, he is not likely to ignore the fact that the second is failing in his duties. You cannot think of God as susceptible to praise and flattery. But if the one simply doing his duty, will not last long either!
?This world is God?s creation. God is the King and we are all, his citizen. So, all the people are my kinsmen. He is not only the King, but the Father and Mother. So, we are all his children. So, we are all brothers and sisters. To keep everyone happy, Veda Dharma, has allotted roles for each. We shall do our duties without being crassly, selfish. God?s family should flourish. God?s will be done. In this, I shall do my bit, as my contribution.? This should be our attitude. In our doing the action, devotion will be inbuilt. Then we will be fully eligible to receive God?s Grace. The Path of Devotion and the Path of Action are not divergent, but convergent in God!

Experiences with Maha Periyava: The restaurant owner

A gentleman from Chennai who owned a popular restaurant was a renowned public figure. He had come for Periyava?s darshan. His business was very successful and he had amassed a lot of money. He was of a devout nature and charitable. During the year, 1958-1960, when Sri Maha Periyava camped in Chennai, he desired to perform pada puja and offer bhikshavandanam.
?Let us see,? said Periyava. Although the gentleman pleaded several times, Periyaval did not accept his request nor did He reject it. But the attendants saw signs of eventual rejection. Some others close to the Matham, dignitaries themselves, began to plead on behalf of the restaurant-owner.
?He is a very good person who does a lot of charity. He could serve the Matham in many ways. He has no children of his own,? and so on.
Periyava listened to everything quietly. ?I do know that he is a good man, is charitable and devoted. Have I ever spoken ill of him to anyone??
?No. It is just that he wishes to serve the Matham in some way.?
?That is just what I am questioning. You call him righteous. Let him serve many temples generously. Even if he offered money to the Matham, it is going to be spent for the same. Why not do it himself??
No one spoke.
?By birth, he is bound to study the Veda. Food must not be sold. It is a great sin. All his wealth has been amassed by selling food. Is that money necessary for Chandramouleeshwara, tell me??
Everyone withdrew, for there was no room for further argument. But the gentleman who ran the restaurant business continued to plead.
The day was fixed for the camp to leave Chennai. Samasti bhiksha was arranged. Samasti means a crowd. In this kind of bhikshavandanam, offerings made by several devotees are pooled together without discrimination between small or large offerings, nor is it known who gave what or how much. Everyone together offers bhiksha to the Master. The gentleman was commanded to join in this bhikshavandanam. He considered it a great fortune. He had a large house in Chetpet worth several crores. He left behind a will that said, ?After my wife and I pass away, this house is to be taken over by SriMatham. In the event of it being sold the money thereof is for SriMatham.?
But as long as Sri Maha Periyava administered the SriMatham, that palatial house was not taken over by the Matham.

"ஜீரணம் ஆகாது; குழந்தைகளுக்கு ஒத்துக்காது;

இடையில்,யார் யாருக்கோ பிரசாதம் கொடுத்தார்கள்;

You should not allow your mind to wander in all directions when you do Puja to the Lord. A short focused Puja is better than an elaborate Puja where the mind keeps wavering
