At first the mind went wild and cried:
I have come thirty years too late.
But by and by the heart replied;
Who is early, who is late,
Here before the Eternal, the timeless state?

I AM in your own souls ! Why see ye not ?
In every breath of yours am I,
but ye are blind,
without true eye, and see Me not.

God of Compassion Fullness

Thou art the Witness present in their hearts.
As the eternal Kalpaka Wishing Tree in the heavens,
Thou will grant all bliss.
Thou art the Sarabha
That comes to shatter my karmas
That leap on me like the lion.

Oh! The Sun that rises to dispel
The thick darkness of my troubled mind!
Thou art the heavenly ship of Grace
That has come to rescue me
From the waters of excessive desire.

Thou, the God of Compassion Fullness
That dances in rapture in the chit sabha
Defying description!

I Send Letters

I send letters to my Beloved,
The dear Krishna.
But He sends no message of reply,
Purposely preserving silence.
I sweep his path in readiness
And gaze and gaze
Till my eyes turn blood-shot.
I have no peace by night or day,
My heart is fit to break.
O my Master, You were my companion
In former births.
When will you come?

SEEKERS OF FIRE

There is a long way yet to go,
O you who have received the call!
Where is the end? I do not know
If there be such a thing at all!
I only know the fire burns
Somewhere, beyond our shadowed ken,
And that a something sweetly yearns
Deep in the loneliest hearts of men.

There is a way that winds and goes
Towards the lover, through the mists
Of centuries, and no one knows
For certainty if he exists.
But when we dream such dreams and taste
Such sweetness in the heart, he must
Bloom like a rose beyond the waste
Of doubt's unyielding desert-dust.

O soul! move on from age to age,
Move on, my God-enchanted soul!
Making your every goal a stage
In some forever-distant goal;
And may each end be but fulfilled
Into beginning; nor forget
The spiral process he hath willed
For feet that need to travel yet.

Be still, O traveling soul! be still!
Even in movement learn to rest!
Unite your will unto his will
And then, throughout your lonely quest,
You will discover that you are
The self-same master whom you seek
From evening-star to evening-star,
From mountain-peak to mountain-peak.

The light is brimming in your eyes,
Your breath has scented all the wind;
In every footfall hidden lies
The goal that you are out to find.
The emptiness of time and space
Grows to a fullness sudden-sweet,
Each step becomes a resting place
For the once-weary traveling feet.

My burning heart

My heart is burning with love
All can see this flame
My heart is pulsing with passion
like waves on an ocean
my friends have become strangers
and I'm surrounded by enemies
But I'm free as the wind
no longer hurt by those who reproach me
I'm at home wherever I am
And in the room of lovers
I can see with closed eyes
the beauty that dances
Behind the veils
intoxicated with love
I too dance the rhythm
of this moving world
I have lost my senses
in my world of lovers.

The Ocean Duckling Raised By A Hen

Your (true) mother was a duck of the river. (But) your nurse was
of the earth and overly attached to dry land.

The fondness for the river which is within your heart is from (your
true) mother, (and) it (is) the natural quality possessed by your
soul.

(But) your fondness for dry land is from this nurse. Leave the
nurse, since she is a bad adviser.

Leave the nurse on the dry land and urge (yourself) forward.
Come into the (vast) river of spirituality, like the "ducks."

Even though your mother may frighten you about water, don't be
afraid, and drive forward quickly toward the river.

You are a duck. You can live in (both) dry and wet (places); you
aren't like a domestic bird, (living) in a bad-smelling house.

You are a king because of (the verse), "We have honored the sons
of Adam."
You can put (your) feet on the dry land as well as in
the ocean.

Since in (your) soul you are (blessed by the verse), "We have
carried them on the ocean,"
push forth from
"We have carried them on the land."

The angels have no way (to reach) the land. (And) also the
(different) kinds of (land) animals are unaware of the ocean.

In body, (you are) an animal (and) in spirit, you are among the
angels-- so you may go upon the earth as well as upon the heavens.

(And) so the one who has vision may be outwardly "a man like
yourselves"
(yet may be) in (his) heart (the receiver) of "the
inspiration has come to him."

The bodily form made of dust has fallen to the earth, but its
spirit  is circling above the highest heaven.

We are all water-birds, young man. And the ocean knows our
language completely.

That (Divine) Oneness is (far) from the direction of (verbal)
description and circumstance,
(since nothing) except duality enters the arena of talking.

Either drink this duality, like a squinting man (who sees double),
or close (your) mouth and become very quiet.

Or (be) sometimes quiet and sometimes speaking, by turn,
(and) pound the drum in the manner of a squinting man-
-and peace (be upon you)!

(But) if you see a (spiritual) confidant,
(then) speak the soul's secret.
(Likewise, if) you see a rose, cry out (and sing)
like the nightingales.

Knowing nothing shuts the iron gates;
the new love opens them.

The sound of the gates opening wakes
the beautiful woman asleep.

Kabir says: Fantastic!
Don't let a chance like this go by!

I told her, "Your love is driving me mad.
Will your chains ever hold me in my dreams?"

"Hush!" she said, "Enough of this fantasy.
How can a madman dream a wise man's dreams?"

A feeling of discouragement when you slip up
is a sure sign that you put your faith in deeds.

Your desire to withdraw from everything
when Allah has involved you in the world of means
is a hidden appetite.

Your desire for involvement with the world of means
when Allah has withdrawn you from it
is a fall from a high aspiration.

Give yourself a rest from managing!
When Someone Else is doing it for you,
don?t you start doing it for yourself!

Ibn Ata'illah

then you are arrogant.

Keep a green tree in your heart,
and perhaps,
 the singing bird will come.

Imagination Does Not Exist

You should come close to me tonight wayfarer
For I will be celebrating you.

Your beauty still causes me madness,
Keeps the neighbours complaining
When I start shouting in the middle of the night
Because I can't bear all this joy.
I will be giving birth to suns.

I will be holding forests upside down
Gently shaking soft animals from trees and burrows
Into my lap.

What you conceive as imagination
Does not exist for me.
Whatever you can do in a dream
Or on your mind-canvas.
My hands can pull - alive - from my coat pocket.

But let's not talk about my divine world.

For what I most want to know
Tonight is:

All about
You.

Hafiz

A Suspended Blue Ocean

The sky
Is a suspended blue ocean.
The stars are the fish
That swim.
The planets are the white whales
I sometimes hitch a ride on,
And the sun and all light
Have forever fused themselves
Into my heart and upon
My skin.

There is only one rule
On this Wild Playground,
For every sign Hafiz has ever seen
Reads the same.

They all say,

"Have fun, my dear; my dear, have fun,
In the Beloved's Divine
Game,

O, in the Beloved's
Wonderful
Game."

Hafiz
