Puinarvasu Vannam -
« on: October 22, 2016, 10:14:34 AM »
Today the 22nd October 2016, is the Punarvasu star day, the star on which Sri Bhagavan was born.
Sri Rama was also born in the same star.

The Asramam celebrates every Punarvasu Day, with special abhishekam, alankaram and arti for
Sri Ramaneswara Mahalingam.

Muruganar has written a poem (Sri Ramana Sannidhi Murai) on the glory of Punarvasu.  This is called
Punarvasu Vannam.

I shall give one verse from Tiruchuzhiyal Padigam (Decad on Tiruchuzhi).  The decade is quite noteworthy because Sri Muruganar says:  "Even if I forget you, my tongue would utter your Name."  The Name and Form are quite important in bhakti marga.

Verse 423:

Lord Ramana, Master of Wisdom shining
On the Vedas' lofty crown,
Because I came to You I have gained
This bliss unparalleled
Lord of ancient Pandyan Tiruchuzhi,*
Be still, clear minds adored,
I may perhaps sometimes forget You
But my tongue shall for ever Your Name utter.

(* Tiruchuzhi is in Madurai district which was capital of ancient Pandyan Kingdom.)

There was also a havan in the mother's shrine for Punarvasu today. In addition to Punarvasu Vannam, there was a rendition of another composition of Muruganar. Followed by prasadam and lunch.

Today is the punarvasu  star day in the Tamizh month of Kartikai  (Kartika).
Sri Bhagavan like Sri Rama was born on a punarvasu star day, in the Tamizh month of Margazhi (Dhanur).  The Asramam celebrates the punarvasu star day
in every month, by special pujas to Sri Ramaneswara Mahalingam.  The Lingam is adorned with a golden casket (the color of punarvasu star is golden).  Sri Muruganar has composed verses under the title punarvasu vaNNam in Sri
Ramana Sannidhi Murai.  Sri Ramana Sannidhi Murai is a composition full of bhakti rasam.  (devotional fervor).

I shall give one verse from Tiruchuzhiyal Padigam (Decad on Tiruchuzhi).  The decade is quite noteworthy because Sri Muruganar says:  'Even if I forget you, my tongue would utter your Name.'  The Name and Form are quite important in bhakti marga.

Today is the punarvasu star day of Margazhi month.  Punarvasu is the birth star of Sri Bhagavan. He was born on punarvasu star day in the month of Dhanur, Margazhi in Tamizh.

Muruganar has written 11 poems on the title Punarvasu vaNNam* and this can be seen in Sri Ramana Sannidhi Murai.

(*glory of Punarvasu)

One of the songs reads as under:

If we could see your face that shines like Sun-rays, with our mortal eyes,
That will be the purpose for which we got eyes, so says the devotees.
O Ramana who is the Light that shines in our Heart, O Annamalai Ramana
This is the day of Punarvasu and its glory!

The day was celebrated with splendor as always.  It so happens there are two Punarvasu days in the month of marghizi this year. Bhagawan's jayanthi will be celebrated during the second occurrence in January.

Dear Sadhak,

Yes.  You are correct.  The Jayanti celebrations will be on the second Punarvasu day.

Today is the Punarvasu star day, of Thai month, the birth star of Bhagavan.  Today there will be special abhishekam, alankaram and arti for Ramaneswara Maha Lingam followed by good meals with sweets etc.,

I shall give below the verses of Muruganar on Punarvasu star, to remember this day
and for reading:

I shall give in this context, some translations from Guru Vachaka Kovai of Muruganar.

Destruction of Mind:

913. Unsteady and wavering minds find only
        Failure and frustration always.

914. The restless mind moves with a speed
That shames the God of Wind . To starve it,
So that it, like a cripple, stays
        Totally immobile is to attain
        Actual Immortality.

915. It is true wisdom to pluck out
Before they grow too strong the weeds
Of lust and anger and greed, and keep
The mind serene and self contained
Like a vast ocean deep and calm
        Untroubled by a single ripple
        Raised by any wind.

918.  He who has vanquished thought, he only
Sits like an emperor on the neck
         Of the  majestic elephant, Jnana,
Know for certain that the mind's
Movements alone give rise to birth
And every cruel pain and sorrow.

920.   Even as the ego does not die
Unless the Self's  glance falls on it,
The painful dream of this phenomenal
          World will never disappear
Unless the mind meets glorious death.

Today is Niranjananda Swami Liberation Day.  He is the poorvasrama brother of
Bhagavan Ramana Maharshi.  He attained liberation today and merged in Bhagavan's
golden feet. His Samadhi is inside the Asramam next to his poorvasrama father's
Samadhi.  There will be special poojas for his Samadhi today.

Today is Punarvasu star day of the month of Aippasi.  Sri Bhagavan was born on
the Punarvasu star day of the month of Dhanus.  Every punarvasu star day is
observed in the Asramam as a special day with special abhishekam, alankaram and arti for Sri Ramaneswra Mahalingm.  Devotees sing the hymn of Punavasu Vannam of
Sri Murganar.

Yathiraip Pathu - Sri Ramana Sannidhi Murai of Muruganar:

அடியார்க்கு எளியான் அம்பலத்தான்
 அவுணர் புரம் போல் என் புரமும்
பொடியாப் பொரிந்து புன்முறுவல்
 பொங்கு முகத்தான் வேங்கடவன்
விடியா இருள் சேர் இரு வினையை
 வீட்டும் கதிர்வாள் விழி நோக்கம்
படியா நின்றார் பரந்தாமப்
 பவிசு கண்டார் படியிடத்தே.

To devotees easy of access
Is Venkata, Lord of the open space,
Whose face lights up with a smile
Because He has razed my mind as once
Hr razed the Asura's fort.  Those on whom
Has fallen His grace, the shining sword
Destroying the dense dark, two fold karma,
Have in this very body beheld
All heaven's splendor.

(Tr. Prof. K. Swaminathan)

Today is also the liberation day of Annamalai Swami. He came to Bhagavan as a
building supervisor. And after serving the job for many years, Sri Bhagavan gave
permission to live elsewhere and do sadhana.  He lived in Palakottu and he did not even  see Sri Bhagavan after that.  He did vigorous sadhana, eating only coconut and jaggery.   On the day of Sri Bhagavan leaving the world, he came to the terrace of the building and realized  that Sri Ramana has left the world. Many people who attended the Samadhi function, came to Annamalai Swami's portion in Palakkottu and had a bath. Annamalai Swami took the rose petals, (used in the samadhi function), from their bodies and ate them!  He never came to see Bhagavan's samadhi.

The detailed story of Annamalai Swami can be read from the two books of David
Godman.
