This is very profound question which every Vedantist asks himself about. Why has God given His Grace to Buddha when He didn't followed any religion, didn't think or speak about God and etc? He hadn't even Guru who to give Him His Grace? I have always wandered how Vedantists explain that. Can you give me some information about that?

Dear i,

Enlightenment, God, belief, getting - are all one and the same. All these words point to the same. Buddha did not 'get' enlightenment, he simply discovered that he already was enlightenment. It was just camouflaged by mirage of clouds.

Guru, need not necessarily be a 'Guru' in the usual sense. If you look at the story of Dhathathreya, (you can read from the Sri mad Bhagavata topic) the 24 Gurus of the Avadhoota. For him, a python was a Guru, a prostitute was a Guru, etc...

What is a Guru, that which enlightens you is Guru. The sun which showed you direction (east, west, etc..) became your Guru. Guru is that which destroys darkness, but, really speaking there is no darkness, but still, Guru is that which shows you even this.

How can we say, Buddha has not followed any religion, it may be so only on books and records. But, he did follow all sadhanas, he did yoga, and many severe austerities, but just there was no name attached to him, like advatin, vedantin, buddhist, jaini, etc...

the quest is common for anybody. The quest is free of any religion. He too was looking for God, he was in search for God, what we call God, he called Truth, he called it freedom from suffering - that as God. What is God? after all? God is that which is peace!

He just saw that Grace is Himself.

Dear ramana,

Buddha did not mention any specific god. In fact when a question was asked about god, he merely smiled and showed a flower.
But he believed in Dharma (Righteousness).  Even one does not believe in God, if he is righteous, that alone would help him
to attain enlightenment.  Dharmic attitudes are the most essential thing for getting attainment. Viveka Choodmani says that if
a man is truthful and righteous, even a red hot iron would not burn him.
