From: ~~~ Talks with Sri Ramana Maharshi, Talk 328.

Q.:
Sri Bhagavan has said that the japa *
must be traced to its source.
Is it not the mind that is meant?

M.:
All these are only the workings of the mind.
Japa helps to fix the mind on a single thought.
All other thoughts are first subordinated
until they disappear.
When it becomes mental it is called dhyana.

Dhyana is your true nature.
It is however called dhyana
because it is made with effort.

Effort is necessary
so long as thoughts
are promiscuous.

Because you are with other thoughts,
you call the continuity of a single thought
meditation or dhyana.

If that dhyana becomes effortless
it will be found to be your real nature.

~~~~~~~~
* japa:
repetition of a sacred word or syllable
or a name of God
CONVERSATIONS WITH ANNAMALAI SWAMI
This waking life is just a long dream which keeps our attention away from what we really are. If you take the attitude that all the happenings in the world are dream events, your mind becomes tranquil. It is only when you take the dream world to be real that you get agitated.
Q: I feel strongly that life is a long dream but I cannot see through the dream. For many years it has been like this.
AS: If you really believed that all life was a dream, nothing in the world would ever trouble you. If you still have problems and worries, like not being able to see through the dream, it means that you have still not completely ceased to identify with what temporarily appears in your consciousness.
You should enquire, 'Who is not able to penetrate through the dream??
The true ?I? is not identified with the dream. If you don't forget your real Self, waking, dreaming and sleeping do not affect you.
The things around you are always changing, but what we really ARE remains changeless.
?All is well, and everything is unfolding as it should. There are no mistakes. None have ever been made, none are being made, and none will ever be made. Its all perception. It?s how you perceive things. For instance, when you look at me what do you see? If I ask each one of you I get seven, eight, nine different answers, but the truth is you are seeing yourself. I am simply a mirror for your own reflection, but I am a self-contained mirror. So all this is taking place as an image on myself. All of life experiences are images on the screen of eternity. The screen is real. The images change. Consciousness is the screen. When you identify with consciousness you become consciousness. When you identify with the image you enhance the image, and you worry, and fret, and fear and you have all sorts of experiences.
As soon as you begin to identify with reality, with consciousness, all fear leaves you, all doubt leaves you, all false thinking leaves you, and you become free. But that?s the only free choice you get. Everything else has been preordained.
The free choice again is: with what are you going to identify, with the image or the screen? If you identify with consciousness you are no longer reacting to conditions, because you understand that all things are for a short time only, then they disappear. Consequently nothing will irritate you, nothing will upset you, nothing will bother you for you are now appearing as only an image and will soon disappear.
Look at this planet which has been here for billions of years. There have been civilizations on this planet for billions of years, and they come and go. We had civilizations on this planet that surpassed our existence today. They are all gone. No trace. As a matter of fact, a couple of years ago there were some excavations in Egypt of a city that was buried about 5,000 years ago. The only thing left is a sign. They deciphered the sign and it said, ?My name is King so-and-so, and this is my city that will last forever.?
So today we think we are going to make this a better world in which to live, and we are going to save the world, and so on. The world has it?s own collective karma. It?s going through a phase. Your job is to save yourself. If you find yourself in a burning building, you do not stop to admire the pictures on the wall, you get out of the building as fast as you can. So, when you know you have a short time in this existence you do not stop to play the games of life, you try to find yourself and become free as fast as you can?.?
Visited Thiruvanamlai and Ramana Ashram on 8-9 November 2018 and did Girivalam . I am visiting TVM after a gap of more than 8 years and last visit was in Dec 2009 . This time visited TVM with my brother but we stayed in Bose Compound ( diagonally opp to Ramana Ashram ) and booked it through AirBnb but had prasad at Sri Ramana Ashram . A wonderful feeling doing Girivalam at Night after a very long gap and in fact only me and my brother were doing the Girivalam at that Night . Got the next year diaries , wall and desk calendars and some Tamil Chanting Books . In the whole a very refreshing experience .
