Kungiliaya Kalaya Nayanar Guru Puja - Sravana (Aavani), Moolam, Avani Moola star day.  25.8.2015.

Today is the liberation day of Kungaliya Kalaya Nayanar, one of the 63 Saints of Saivites in Periya Puranam.

This day is celebrated in all Saiva Maths and Saiva homes.

The land where the river Kaveri,  gently washes the entire land with the canals taking her deep into the
fields is the town Tiru Kadavur. The tall coconut trees fanning the Lord like fan, who is served the feast
on a banana leaf by the plantains, the fishes in the field curling and entertaining, the land is prosperous
in production and worship. With the Vedic rituals happening all around, even the rain would be smelt to
have the odor of the ghee in the ritual fire.

In that town came in the tradition of people who think with kindness about all creatures, was the devotee Kalayar.  Reinforced by a high degree of discipline, the Nayanar led the life for saluting the Spear-handed
Lord Siva,  who stood striking down the fast coming death for the surrendered young sage. For the Lord
who is described as the sweet odored by the Vedas, he used to put the fragrant smoke of Kungiliyam
(an incense powder, which placed on coal fire, produces nice fragrance.) He  stood worshiping the Lord
with his heart sublimating in that love. His wealth was spent off fully in that service, still he did not think
of a pause.

With nothing left for even food and the relatives and family in discomfort, the Nayanar's companion in
his charity - his wife gave her even her managala sutram for sale and asked him to get rice grains for
food. When he was proceeding to bring some rice by selling that necklace, on his way came a merchant
who sells the Kungiliyam.  The devotee was delighted to see the Kungiliyam.  He thought he was blessed
to do the great service by the God that day too.   He got that sack of Kungiliyam, in exchange for that
necklace and with great devotion did not even stop before reaching Siva's abode. With the nectar of love
filled full in his heart, he burnt them for the Lord sitting as the nectar pot.

While the devotee was in the temple, on the Almighty's command the God of wealth Kubera, placed
huge wealth in the devotees place. While the family was sleeping in hunger, the Lord on Holy Bull
indicated to the Nayanar's wife, the grace. She woke up to see that sweet surprise with the entire house
had become rich in wealth. She, praising the feet of God of suffering people, started making delicious food
for her beloved husband. Meanwhile the Lord conveyed to the Nayanar to go and have the milk rice and
end his hunger. Unable to refute His grace, he saluted and went home. He saw that his house was
completely changed with heaps of material decorating it. With raised brows, he inquired his wife. She
told the mercy of Lord Siva.   Worshiping the Holy feet of the Lord which never leave the one who
surrendered in lurch, they had the feast with the devotees of the Lord. He continued the fragrant
service.

That time when he was serving the Lord of Tirukkadaiyur, the king who wanted to see the Lord of Tirup-
panandal,  standing straight, who bent the head of His Sivalingam, helping a deva virgin by name
Thadakai  to worship Him. The king tried with his elephants, soldiers and all force, they all became tired
but the Lord did not stand straight.  Nayanar, appreciating the motive of the king to see Him upright,
went to the green land Tiruppanandal.  Saluting  the Lord with axe in His reddish hand. then, tied the Lord with a floral garland and tied that with a rope on his neck. He pulled, not to test or show his power, but to participate in the service; not having big physical force, but with an admirable force of love for the Master. How can the Lord who can not be impressed by force, neglect his selfless love. He stood straight blessing the ripe love of the Nayanar, directed towards Him. The floral rain drowned the place. The king fell down under his feet praising the devotion. The king left after doing many services to the Lord of mountain bow. Nayanar, returned to kadavUr after some days worshiping the Dancing feet.

Some time later when Tiru Navukkarasar  and the Jnana Sambandhar came on their pilgrimage to
Kadavur, Kungiliya Kalaya Nayanar,  hosted them and the accompanying devotees with enchanting
hospitality and got their blessings and the grace of Lord of greats. He did various services to the
Siva, the Lord who removes death, and attained the comfort in His Abode.

Arunachala Siva.

Saint Manikkavachagar - Aavani Moolam Star Day - 25.08.2015.

Today is also the day in the month of Aavani, Moolam star day, when Siva, in the guise of a horseman,
brought to Madurai, horses for the Pandyan King. The animals were actually jackals which Siva changed
them into horses and brought them to the King.  The King was happy that as per Manikkavachagar's
words, the horses had come.  He took them from the horseman (Siva), the leash for the horses and gave
a gold coin as a token of exchange.

The horses became jackals and they broke open the stable, killed all the other horses and injured the
guards and rushed back to the forest.

The saint was again imprisoned.   Siva made Vaiga river to go spate with floods. And as a citizen, He
came as a boy on behalf of Pittu Vani - an old lady selling jaggery mixed with rice flour, to do his part of
the work in pushing sands to the bank of the river to prevent waters from flooding into the city.
However he did not do any work.  Eating the pittu, he nicely slept under a tree. The King came to inspect
and found this boy (representing the old Pittu Vani), wasting his time. He caned him. The  beating was felt
by everyone in their back, including the king!

Siva appeared before the King and told him to release the saint.  He also took the Pittu Vani to His Abode.

This day is Aavani Moolam.  It is celebrated in the temples of  Madurai and Tiruperundurai, (Avudaiyar Kovil),
and other major Siva temples.  It is called Pittu Thirunal, the festival of Pittu.

I have given the detailed story of Saint Manikkavachagar, as narrated by Sri Bhagavan to Suri Nagamma,
in one of the earlier posts, sometime in February 2015.   This is also given in Sri Ramana Puranam, English
translation of David Godman of Muruganars' work.

Saint Manikkavachagar himself describes the event of jackals - becoming horses and then back as
jackals - in Madurai in his Tiruvachakam, Ananda Malai.

"Regulation of life, such as getting up at a fixed hour, bathing, doing mantra, japa, etc., observing ritual, all this is for people who do not feel drawn to Self-enquiry or are not capable of it. But for those who can practise this method all rules and discipline are unnecessary". ~ "Day by Day with Bhagavan" 7-18-1946.

All the activities that the body is to go through are determined when it first comes into existence. It does not rest with you to accept or reject them. The only freedom you have is to turn your mind inward and renounce activities there. ~ (Bhagavan in 'Day by Day with Bhagavan' 1.6.1946)

We are responsible for what we are, and whatever we wish ourselves to be, we have the power to make ourselves. If what we are now has been the result of our own past actions, it certainly follows that whatever we wish to be in the future can be produced by our present actions; so we have to know how to act.

Cheruthunai Nayanar - one of the 63 Saiva Saints:- Avani Poosam star day:

The place where the Lord of the Universe sits hearing the sound of the frogs rifting apart the constant
rhythm of the streams and slow wind patting the paddies is the land of rice grains ThanychAvUr.
In the agricultural family of that town came the staunch servant of the Lord who stomped the Kala,(Yama),
by the name Cheruthunai Nayanar. Heart of love, hands and head tireless of saluting the Giver of
liberation, body and mind completely engaged in serving the Lord in perfection. The Lord who dances
in the streets who has taken abode in the Tiruvarur temple, that attracting beauty attracted the
Nayanmars  to serve Him.

The devotee like a bee that is not ordered to go to the flower but does it on its own, at the abode of
the Lord who stays in an anthill, enthusiastically volunteered to do the various services of the God.
The service was his job, service was his pleasure, service was his living and idealisation of service was his aim. The ideal thing delighted in his sacred work. One day the queen of the Pallava emperor Kochengat  Chozhan
smelt a flower that was lying near the dais where the garlands and floral offerings are made. The flowers
that are offered to the Lord are not to be smelt or used before.

The devotee unable to bear this act became furious. How can one smell the flower that is designated for the holy matted hair of the Supreme, he felt. He rushed with a sharp weapon and cut her nose. His act might seem extreme but was based on love and discipline. What matters to the devotee whether it is the wife of the emperor or of a common man ? The fearless devotee reached the floral feet of the Strong companion of devotees in His service. Let the determination of Cheruthunai Nayanar, in offering an unstained service to the Lord Siva. stay in the mind.

The king saw the queen screaming in pain. Who in this world dared to do such an atrocity, he thundered. Chereuthunai Nayaranar came there and explained what had happened. The king with an upright royal
stick that was not bent for relatives, said that the punishment was not complete. He took his sword and slained the slender hands of the queen that took the flower. There was a rain of flowers appreciating his justice. The king ruled long keeping in mind the holy feet of the Lord of Justice. He resided under that sacred feet with the praise of the world. Let the impartiality and devotion of Kazharshinga Nayanar, stay in the mind.

Pugazh  Thunai Nayanar guru puja-Avvani Ayilyam Star Day. 10.09.2015.

His guru puja day is celebrated on this day, with special pujas for the Naynmar's stone image.

In the town Cjherivivillikpthui, came in the tradition of priests worshiping Lord Seruivillipiuthuir, was the devotee Pugazh Thunai Nayanar.  He had stuck with the paste of devotion the perennial feet f Lord of immeasurable fame to his lotus of heart. He did the ritualistic worship given life by the non stopping
stream of love everyday. His worship was the expression of his knowledge, a penance by itself, an
expression of supreme devotion for the Supreme that stops the Ganga in a tiny portion of Its matted hair. That time there was a big famine in that area. While others leave for greener pastures, our Nayanmar
rejected any such decision saying, "I will not leave my Lord, come whatever be". Though the land became
dry,  his heart was still wet as ever for the anointment of the Lord who is pleased by the cool water. It is
rightly said, even if the five elements of the Universe go out of their way, the true devotees who live in their heart with Lord Siva. always, do not get disturbed.

Even in that famine period Nayanar brought the best of available flowers and anointed the Lord with the cold water. What else does the Great Lord who goes on alms require other than this cold water that represented an extreme love that wanted to take care of Him under any circumstance ?! The God who is always anointed by the cosmic river Ganga, delightfully sat in his heart and that abode. The mind was always willing to serve, but the body ? It was in the peak of fatigue because of the days of starvation. One day when he brought the water for holy anointment, he could not control and fell down putting the pot of water on the Lord's head. As he slept there itself by the God's grace, he was told by the Lord in his dream that he would be given one coin everyday till the land gains back its prosperity. He woke up and saw with the body that had gone lean and vigourless, a coin kept on the altar of the abode. His face blossomed thanking the mercy of mahAdEva.

He got the coin there everyday. With the sickness of hunger driven away, he served the devotees of the Bull flagged Lord paving way for the generations to follow him. With the Devadutta always bathed in his worship, he reached the cool feet of the Lord of Parvati. Let the mother like love and dedication in serving the Deathless Lord of Thunai stay in the mind.

Pugzh Thunai Naynamar attained Siva's feet on this day.

Arunachala Siva.

Adipatha Naynar - Guru Puja - Avani Ayilam star day.  10.09.2015.

In all Saiva Maths, special pujas are done on this day to the stone image of Adipath  Nayanar.

The famous olden day port in the east coast of the Indian subcontinent, where the various ships of ancient engineers' thoughtful  engineers' thoughtful designs queued up for trade - that town is Nagappattinam.
The tides coming as if eager to take rest in the spread white sand bed, but receding immediately after kissing
the sand - the tidal roar non stopping like the devotees' chanting of God.

In the fishermen suburb of the town was the devotee Adipathinarr, who offered his heart of fresh flower to the Old God who has the new moon on His matted hair. Nayamnmar, was the leader of a big group of fishermen operating many boats in various catchments and was the owner of the heaps of marine material brought. He always used to leave the first fish that enters his net for the Love he live with - Lord's Siva. He used to do it regularly, come whatever be - whether there was only one fish caught or in huge numbers. The Lord delighted in the food of his love. For some days there were very less fishes caught. Still he was doing his offering of leaving the first fish for the Lord.

One day there came a fish glittering like gold with precious gems like parts came into their net, making all the faces there bright in jubilance . The fish glittered like it could get even the whole world as its price. It would make his life into a heavily luxurious one. The people there told they have got a fish. Even when such a great wealth in the form of a fish was waiting Nayanmar never went back in his duty for the Lord who sits on the rocks of Himalayas. He said with great devotion that the fish being the first one which was admirable and priceless was for the Dancing feet. He left the fish in the sea like leaving all the bonds with simple love. The Lord with deer in hand appeared with His consort in the Horizon to bless the Nayanar who stood for his love
in the comfortable and miserable periods. The Black-throated God gave him the living in the Sivalokam,
along with His great devotees. Let the deed of love that was unaffected by the material benefits of Adipatha
Nayanar, stay in the mind.

Ilayankudi Mara Nayanar -Guru Puja - AvaNi -Moolam:

He reached the Abode of Lord Slva, on this day.  In the Saiva Maths , Guru Puja, in the Saiva Maths.  Ilaiyankudi illuminated itself in the history by having a slave of slaves of Shankara known as Ilayankudi.
Ceded the his whole heart to the Lord who robs the hearts of the Sat. He got the widening wealth out of the hard work in the farm fields and the wide heart that tries to reach the infinite in the selfless service to the worshippers of the warrier who destroyed the three cities of three impurities. He had an enjoyable life with this wealth. Whoever came at his house with the love for the wet matted haired Supreme, were given a appealing welcome with his folded hands on the head, blossomed face showering flowers of nice words and his humble deeds making the red carpet. He would clean their feet with the scented water, give them the comfortable seat and then serve the food which is rich in all the six tastes for those devotees who love the taste of Holy five letters than anything else. He lived like the Kubera,  who was given limitless wealth by the Lord.
