Strangely,i was thinking about this today.
I believe Bhagavan always pointed,with His famous question 'Who am I',on the subject himself. And that suppose to be the essence of His teaching. If we start to search for some imaginary 'I',it will surely become an object.
Also,many times i have read explanations of some modern teachers,where they absolutely refuse 'God' like term,and than give it some new names like Brahman,Absolute,Parabrahman,or what ever,You name it. It is still that 'something other than me',and i wonder what is the difference really,and what matter does it have by which name we call it. There are all names for Highest Reality,and somehow their meaning is one and the same for me. Give it any name,and You put a picture in man's brain,and with it imagination and assumption what this is. And the point with this particular teaching,i believe,is to actually get rid of these notions and imaginations. To leave the mind aside,so to say. If we speak about Self,than that Self must not become an object.

In the view that all the four qualities must be together and in full, there is complete agreement between the Srutis.
- reason and experience. Otherwise even if one of them is wanting inquiry cannot be pursued to success, but
after death, regions of merit will be gained.  When all the four qualities are perfect, and together, inquiry is fruitful.

Disciple: In conclusion, who are fit for inquiry into the Self?

Master: Only those who have all the four requisite qualities in full, and not others,  whether versed in Vedas and Shastras
or otherwise highly accomplished, not practisers of severe austerities, nor those strictly observing the religious rites or vows,
or reciting mantras, nor worshippers of any kind, nor those giving away large gifts, nor wandering pilgrims  etc., Just as
the Vedic rites are not meant for the non generate so also the inquiry is not for the unqualified.

Disciple: Can want of requisite qualities disqualify even a very learned scholar?

Master: Be he learned in all the sacred lore or ignorant of all of it, only the four fold qualities can qualify a man for inquiry.
The Sruti says: 'The one whose mind is in equipoise, senses controlled, whose activities have ceased and who possesses
fortitude' is fit for this. From this it follows that the four fold virtues competent but only those who are possessing the fourfold
virtues.

Disciple: Is any distinction made among seekers who are competent?

Master: For inquiry into the Self, there is absolutely no distinction bearing on caste, stage of life or other similar matters.
Be the seeker the foremost scholar, pandit, illiterate man, child, youth, old man, bachelor, householder, tapasvin, sannyasi
brahmin,  kshatriya, vaisya, surda, chandala or a woman, only these four qualifications make up the seeker.  This is the
undisputed view of the Vedas and shastras.

Disciple: This cannot be. How can illiterate men, women, and chandalas be qualified to the exclusion of a pandit learned
in the Sastras?  He must certainly be more qualified than others.  You say that a knowledge of the Sastras is no qualification
but practice of their teachings is.  No  one can practice what he has not known.  How can an illiterate person qualify himself
in the requisite manner? 

Master:  In reply I ask you and tell me -- how does the learned  man qualify himself?

Disciple:  Because he has known the teachings of the Sastras that he should not do karma for selfish ends but dedicate
it to God, he will do so; his mind will be purified; gradually he will acquire dispassion etc., needed for inquiry. Now tell
me how an illiterate man can qualify himself?

Master:  He also can.  Though not learned now, he might have learnt the teachings in preceding births, done actions dedicated
to God; his mind being already pure enough, he can now readily acquire the qualities needed for inquiry into the Self.

Disciple: In the illiterate man, should the sadhanas acquired in the preceding births, and later lying as latencies, now
manifest themselves, why should not his learning acquired in those births similarly manifest itself now?

Master: Some of his past karmas may obstruct only the learning from re-manifesting itself.

Disciple: If the learning is obstructed, how is not the Sadhana also obstructed from manifestation?

Master: Though the learning is obstructed, the fruits of his valuable labor cannot be lost; he cannot lose competence
for inquiry.

Disciple: What would happen if his four fold sadhanas were obstructed as well as his learning?

Master: The result would be that for want of the requisite qualities neither the scholar nor the other would be fit for
inquiry.  Both would be equal.

Papaji : There is a river of thought-waves.
Everyone is being washed downstream.
Everyone is clinging to these thoughts and being washed away.

Just give rise to the single thought, "I want to be free."
This thought will rarely come out of the entire population.
The entire population of the planet is moving downstream.
They are not destined to give rise to the thought,
"I want to be enlightened in this very span of time."


So I call this thought of freedom going against the stream and towards the source. It does not require any effort to give rise to this thought. The thought "I want to be free" is itself free.
This thought will take you to freedom.
It is the most rare thought.
Out of the entire population of 6 billion, only a handful give rise to this thought.

Q : Master, I have been with you four days now, and l am still not enlightened.

Papaji : (laughing) Yes, i am surprised, a smart boy like you.

Q : What should I do?

Papaji : Let me tell you what my teacher told me.
Just be quiet.
This quiet does not involve talking or not talking.
It does not involve any doing whatsoever.
Just let the mind fall into si?lence.
This is enough.

Now wait. I can't believe what you just said to him.
I?ve been trained to think that it takes years and years of practice and life times of training and hard work to reach liberation.
Now you say it?s simple a switch on the wall,
a change of perception. Is that correct?

You need not switch on or off.
For the sun to shine do you switch it on?

Q : No.

Papaji : Just like this.
This light is always there.
No switches at all.
The sun has no switches.
You turn your face away and you call it night.
Sun has no night and no day. You are that sun.
This is your own light and you are that.
You don't need any switches.
The switches are limitations.
You have fixed these limitations yourself.
Nature has not fixed any switches.

"I want this, I want that. I dislike this, I like that."
If you remove this switch of like and dislike, how will you feel?
Instantly you will be free.

Likes and dislikes keep you in bondage and suffering.
There are no walls for the switches either.
Walls are imaginary only, like walls between countries.
You have constructed this wall between you and something else.
You have to break this which does not exist.
The frontier you have created is the suffering.
You have to demolish it by yourself. Nobody will help you.

Q : What do you mean, Nobody will help you?

Papaji : The Self has to help the Self; nobody else can help.
Who else will drop this wall? You have to help yourself.
Find out, is it possible to be out of the Self, ever?

First say, "I want help." Then discover who needs help.
Self is not suffering. Self is not in bondage.
Self is ever free.
So you are saying it is the mind clinging to the wall that is suffering ?

Yes. Who has created separation?

Mind has created separation, and no mind will remove this separation. The separation doesn't exist.
Even to say "I am separate" is a joke.

It is only when there is a need for understanding that there is something to be understood. Once some of Krishnamurti's students came here to see me.
They said there is only one difference between our teachings.
They said, "Krishnamurti removes concepts from the vessel and
Poonjaji breaks the vessel altogether." (laughs)

So allow yourself some time, a couple of moments.
And in those moments there should be no trespassing.
Make available a few seconds and during this span nobody should trespass. I think you could well afford to be available for a few moments. You have spent all your life for others,
and not even a minute for your Self.

Everyone possesses you.
When you are born, your parents say you are "my son."
Go to school next and you're "my student.''
Then marry and you're "my husband."
Have children and you're "my father."
Remove these possessions.
Let no one possess you.
Reject everything and see what happens.

You have to devote some time for your Self, either now or some other lifetime. You have to reach your home.
There is no escape.
You have to return home, either now or tomorrow.
You must decide if you want to play more.
It doesn't matter. In the end, it doesn't matter.

You think it is taking time.
It is no time that you are spending because you are already free;
it is only your illusion that you are not.
You have to allow time, once and for all, if you want to be happy.

The moment you declare "I AM FREE!"--
standing on the mountaintop of your toes, arms up Eureka!
There is the happy moment.
Very happy moment.

Disciple: NO. This cannot be.  Though not already qualified, the scholar having known the teachings can put them into
practice and gradually qualify himself, whereas the other with all his studies had not already succeeded in his preceding
births, and what hope can there be now that he has forgotten what he had learnt and his sadhanas are obstructed?  Obviously
he cannot be successful in inquiry.

Master: Not so.  Though illiterate a man anxious for liberation will approach a master, learn from him the essence of the scriptures,
earnestly practice the teachings, and succeed in the end.  Just as a worldly man ignorant of scriptures yet desirous of heaven,
seeks guidance from a master, and by observance, worship and discipline, gains his end, so also by a master's teachings even
an illiterate man can certainly benefit as much as the scholar with his knowledge.

Disciple: Religious rites bear fruits only according to the earnestness of the man.  Only if the seeker of Truth is earnest can
a master's guidance act in the same manner. Otherwise how can it be?

Master: Just as earnestness is the essential factor for reaping fruits of from karma, so it is with the practice of sadhanas by
the learned scholar or the master's disciple.  Karma or sadhana cannot succeed if interest is wanting in them. A scholar or
an illiterate man reaps the fruits of karma according to the interest he takes in its performance.  One who is not earnest need
not be considered in any matter concerning the Vedas, or a master.

A scholar or an illiterate man, if he has not already qualified himself as aforesaid, but is now desirous of liberation, should in
right earnest practice the sadhanas so that he may qualify himself now at least.  He will later be fit for inquiry. So no distinction
can be made between a scholar and an illiterate  man.

(This is a part of Thiruvachagam, one of the greatest Tamil devotional works composed by Saint Manikkavasagar. (www.geocities.com/profvk/WOVpage11.html) The Tamil people say that ?One who is not moved by Thiruvachagam will not be moved by anything in this world.? This work is actually a Suprabatham for the God of Thiruperum thurai (The present day Avudayar Koil neat Pudu kottai). It is interesting to note that Suprabatham are completely absent in ancient Sanskrit literature. This Thirupalliyezuchi was followed by several in Tamil by great Vaishnavite saints and in the last centaury the first Sanskrit work, Venkatesa Suprabatham. Even today the number of Sanskrit Suprabathams is very few in number.)

The nightingale sang, the cocks crowed,
The birds sang, the conches made sound,
The stars became dim when the light came,
The sun shows its rays to all of us,
And Oh god , please show us your feet,

You are not seen by many but for us you are easy to see,
And Oh our Lord be pleased to wake up.

Innisai veenayar yazhinar oru paal,
Irukkodu thothiram iyambinar oru paal,
Thunniya pinai malar kayinar oru paal,
THozhugayar azhugayar thuvalgayar oru paal,
Chenniyil anjali koopinar oru paal,

On one side are musicians playing the Veena,
On another side are people chanting prayers from Vedas,
On one side are people with garland of flowers in their hand,
On another are those who salute, who cry and who dance,
And on another side are those saluting with hands above their heads,
Oh God presiding over Thiruperumthurai,
For the sake of ruling me and giving me all sweetness,
Oh our Lord, be pleased to wake up.

Bhoothangal thorum ninrayenin allal,
Pokkilan varavilan yena ninaipulavor,
Geethangal paduthal aaduthal allal,
Kettarivom unai kandarivaarai,
Cheetham kol vayal Thiruperumthurai manna,
Chindanaikkum ariyay , yengal mun vandu,
Yedangal aruthu yemmai aandu arul puriyum,

The learned ones say that you are in all beings,
Also that you do not go and you do not come,
And though we sing your praise and dance,
We have not seen those who have seen you,
Oh king of Thiruperumthurai blessed with very rich fields,
You who are beyond our thought , please come before us,
Cut off all our sorrows and shower your grace,
Oh our Lord, be pleased to wake up.

Oh our Lord be pleased to wake up.

Athu pazhachuvai yena amudhena aritharkku,
Arithena yelithena amararum ariyar,
Ithu avan thiru uru , ivan avan yenave,
Yennai aandu kondu ingu ezhundarulum,
Madhu valar pozhil thiru uthara kosa,
Mangayullai , Thiruperumthurai manna,
Yethu yemai pani kolum aarathu ketpom,

Even the gods do not know that it is ,
As tasty as a fruit , it is like nectar,
It is rare and it is extremely easy to know,
And that this is his form and this one is that,
Oh king of Thiruperumthurai which is in the fields,
Where the singing bees wander all round the flowers,
And is in the division of Uthara kosa mangai,
Please accept me and tell us how to serve you,
Oh our Lord , be pleased to wake up.

Mundiya mudal nadu iruthiyum aanaai,
Moovarum arigilar , yaavar mathu arivar,
Pandanai viraliyum neeyum nin adiyar,
Pazham kudil thorun ezhundaruliya parane,

You became the first of firsts and the central and the end,
And when the holy trinity do not know you ,
How can anybody else know you at all,
But you and The goddess with her hand holding the ball,
Are in the hearts and hearth of all your devotees,
And showed them the fire like form of yours ,
As well as the great temple of Thiruperumthurai,
And also showed how one can become a learned one,
Oh the deathless nectar, be pleased to wake up.

Vinnaka thevarum nannavu maatta,
Vizhu porule una thozhuppadiyongal,
Mannagathe vandu vaazha cheydhaane,
Van Thiruperumthuraiyay vazhi adiyom,
Kannagathe nindru kali tharu thene,

Oh God who is not even accessible to the Gods,
You made us , who are slaves of your feet,
Live in this earth, Oh Lord of the rich Thiruperumthurai,
Oh God who is in our eyes and make it sweet like honey,
Oh nectar got from sea. Oh sugarcane ,
You were in the thoughts of devotees and became soul of this earth,
Oh our Lord , be pleased to wake up.

Bhuvaniyir ppoy piravamayin naal naam,

Sharing this excerpt from TGN's talk:

?The problem for us is that we have to live with our mind since we cannot wish it away. It is surely not an enviable situation we find ourselves in, where we can neither subdue the mind nor acquiesce in its wayward activities. Are we to be helpless and hapless through life, slipping from one misery to another and always dreading what the next moment could have in store for us?

 You will agree that there is an imperative need to evolve a definitive system of Mind-culture that would enable and equip us to transact with the world-process without losing our inner poise and without having to harvest regret at the end of interaction. The obvious preliminary step is to get to know the anatomy of what you seek to discipline viz., the mind.

 In Yoga-Vaasishtam, Sage Vasishta likens the mind to a strange creature with multiple heads and arms and legs that is flagellating itself and crying out it is in misery all the time. In the absence of any spiritual training to start with, Vasishta admits he could not stop or control the strange creature with a view to ascertaining the cause for its masochistic obsession. Acquiring such a yogic training later (by the method of pratyagaram which consists of willful withdrawal of the mind every time it strays into world-activities and develops likes and dislikes) Vasishta could stop the creature in its tracks and inquire, ?Who are you? Why are you putting yourself to so much needless suffering?? On hearing these words of cold logic the creature flares up and screams, You are my enemy. You ask me ?Who am I?? and under your gaze I am wilting and wasting away!

 Sage Vasishta relates the experience to his star-disciple Rama: ?Even as I was looking, the many heads and arms and legs of the strange being melted away. The creature sobbed over the loss, then it laughed as if in relief and again it wept. Ultimately in a long burst of joyous laughter the being vanished, leaving no trace behind. It was an eerie encounter proving that truth could at times be stranger than fiction.?

 This is a parable of deep import. The mind was the freak-creature and its several heads were its thoughts and desires, and the many arms were the doubts and fears with which it was torturing itself.  When the mind was forced to raise the question ?Who am I?? it started to look for its own identity for the first time. That is, instead of projecting outward as hitherto, it was turned on itself, to find that it had no independent existence but was only a projection of the life-energy.

Mind is aroopa (formless) by itself but it takes the shape and quality of any object it contemplates. On thinking of chocolate the mind becomes a three-dimensional candy-bar, and the sense-organ for taste viz., the tongue commences watering. By the same token, when placed on life-energy the mind becomes subtle as never before, for that is the anatomy of the basic energy-particle.

In the process of seeking its own origin, all the doubts it had piled up through generations were dispelled rapidly and all its worldly desires were rendered redundant. However, prolonged association with doubts and desires had generated a sense of ownership for them in the mind and it grieved over their loss due to habit. But realising that the shedding of adjuncts (upadhis) was to its own good in that it was getting lightened, the mind exulted. As Bhagavan Ramana Maharishi used to say ?desires are the food and fuel for the mind?; and once the mind is denuded of its raison d?etre, it simply ceases to exist and subsides in its source and origin like a river merging in the ocean in an irreversible confluence.

By way of summarising what has been explained so far, I shall go to a few questions and answer them:

?        What  is Mind?
 It is only a projection of your life-energy.

 
?         Why  is it  in agitation  most of the time?
Because it does not know itself or its own base and source. Ignorance is the root-cause of misery.

 ?         How  shall I quieten  the mind?
By turning it 180? on its axis.

 
?         Will it remain  in  the revised angle?
Initially it will not, because the torque will tend to deflect it back slowly to its habituated position.

 ?         How  shall I prevent the deflection?
By remaining vigilant and applying angle-correction (which is also course-correction) on a continuing basis.

 ?         To sum up

A trained mind is your best Guru. Which means, you are your own Master.
I am only showing the Way; and remember, I may not be doing it for long.?

searching for your phone number to convey my condolences through you to the bereaved family. If the Hindu news is
(in Obituray) is correct, please convey my condolences to the bereaved family of Sage T.G.N.
