Quote
“Do not store up for yourselves treasures on earth, where moth and rust destroy, and where thieves break in and steal. But store up for yourselves treasures in heaven, where moth and rust do not destroy, and where thieves do not break in and steal. For where your treasure is, there your heart will be also.
Matthew 6:19-21

The world is transitory. When we cling to the world we are doomed. We will lose everything - house, family, friends, even our body and current life. But if we rest in the Self (if we merge in the Heart from where we emerge) then we are free. Because the Self was never born or destroyed. I would appreciate another interpretations of these verses. :)

The story of Jesus and Samaritan woman
« Reply #76 on: February 06, 2012, 01:56:51 AM »
Quote
Now He had to go through Samaria. So He came to a town in Samaria called Sychar, near the plot of ground Jacob had given to his son Joseph. Jacob’s well was there, and Jesus, tired as He was from the journey, sat down by the well. It was about the sixth hour. When a Samaritan woman came to draw water, Jesus said to her, “Will you give Me a drink?” (His disciples had gone into the town to buy food.) The Samaritan woman said to Him, “You are a Jew and I am a Samaritan woman. How can You ask me for a drink?” (For Jews do not associate with Samaritans). Jesus answered her, “If you knew the gift of God and Who it is that asks you for a drink, you would have asked Him and he would have given you living water.” “Sir,” the woman said, “You have nothing to draw with and the well is deep. Where can You get this living water? Are You greater than our father Jacob, who gave us the well and drank from it himself, as did also his sons and his flocks and herds?” Jesus answered, “Everyone who drinks this water will be thirsty again, but whoever drinks the water I give him will never thirst. Indeed, the water I give him will become in him a spring of water welling up to eternal life.” The woman said to Him, “Sir, give me this water so that I won’t get thirsty and have to keep coming here to draw water.”

This well is God, Brahman, The Eternal Self - the source of all happiness.

Dear ramana

Sri Bhagavan often used to quote the second line.  He also loved the phrase: I AM THAT I AM.

Quote
Jesus replied, “Very truly I tell you, no one can see the kingdom of God unless they are born again.”
“How can someone be born when they are old?” Nicodemus asked. “Surely they cannot enter a second time into their mother’s womb to be born!”
Jesus answered, “Very truly I tell you, no one can enter the kingdom of God unless they are born of water and the Spirit. Flesh gives birth to flesh, but the Spirit gives birth to spirit. You should not be surprised at My saying, ‘You must be born again.’ The wind blows wherever it pleases. You hear its sound, but you cannot tell where it comes from or where it is going. So it is with everyone born of the Spirit.”

Quote
Bhagavan Ramana Maharishi: "Forgetfulness of the real nature is the real death. Remembrance of it, it is the true birth.

Dear prasanth,

It is said so. In Jesus' life from his 17th year till his crucifixion in his 32nd year, there are no details or preachings.
It is said that he came to India and lived in Himalayas with Hindu monks and Buddhist monks. Irving Wallace mentions it
indirectly in his book THE WORD.

Dear prasanth,

There is also a book DID JESUS REALLY COME TO INDIA?  But I have not seen or read this book. Of course, all are surmises only.

Quote
The Lord is my shepherd,
I shall not want;
He makes me lie down in green pastures.
He leads me beside still waters;
He restores my soul.
He leads me in paths of righteousness
for His name's sake.

Even though I walk through the valley
of the shadow of death,
I fear no evil;
for You are with me;
Your rod and Your staff, they comfort me.

Surely goodness and mercy shall follow me
all the days of my life;
and I shall dwell in the house of the
Lord forever.

What does this Bible passage mean in the light of advaita?
« Reply #85 on: April 02, 2012, 12:01:30 AM »
Quote
Jesus answered, "I am the way and the truth and the life. No one comes to the Father except through me. (John 14:6)

Christians say that only Jesus can 'save' us. This excludes all other religions, paths according to the Christian view.

But what does this passage mean in the light of advaita?

Thank You for your kind and helpful answers!

Dear Kicsi108, what it means in the light of Advaita is like this:

I am [the Self, the infinite Awareness, the thoughtless Mind, the Silence, the Guru within] (is) the way, I am (is) the Truth and the Life. No one come to the Father except through Me [No one can come to the Father except through the Way I teach].

And the summum bonum of all the Bible is ""Love the Lord your God with all your heart and with all your soul and with all your strength and with all your mind"; and, "Love your neighbor as yourself"."

Quote
36 “Teacher, which is the greatest commandment in the Law?”
37 Jesus replied: “‘Love the Lord your God with all your heart and with all your soul and with all your mind.’
38 This is the first and greatest commandment.
39 And the second is like it: ‘Love your neighbor as yourself (your Self).’
40 All the Law and the Prophets hang on these two commandments.”

Dear Ramana,

Can you please let me know if there are any quote about "Non Doership" in Bible? The parallels for "I am not the Doer, But Thou Art!"

The abandonment of "Not me, my, I etc... but only Thou" etc,

Thanks in advance

Salutations to Bhagavan

Dear Nagaraj, I remembered and this one:

Quote
39 Jesus went out as usual to the Mount of Olives, and His disciples followed Him.
40 On reaching the place, He said to them, “Pray that you will not fall into temptation.”
41 He withdrew about a stone’s throw beyond them, knelt down and prayed,
42 “Father, if You are willing, take this cup from Me; yet not My will, but Yours be done.”

Luke, chapter 22

Salutations to Bhagavan

There is the wonderful Lord's Prayer:
Our Father who art in heaven, Hallowed be thy name.
Thy kingdom come. Thy will be done, as in heaven, so on earth.
Give us this day our daily bread
.
And forgive us our debts, as we also have forgiven our debtors.
And bring us not into temptation, but deliver us from the evil

'Daily Bread' means that all results are given by him only.
'Forgive us our Debts'-means free us from all Karma.
'Deliver us from Evil' means Deliver us from mAyA.
'Thy Kingdom come.Thy will be done' means that this world and its beings are manifestation of God and everything happens by his will.

An excerpt from The Gospel of Sri Ramakrishna:
Knowledge and ignorance
MASTER (to the Vaishnava devotee): "The feeling of 'Thee and Thine' is the outcome of
Knowledge; 'I and mine' comes from ignorance. Knowledge makes one feel: 'O God, Thou
art the Doer and I am Thy instrument.
O God, to Thee belongs all-body, mind, house, family, living beings, and the universe. All
these are Thine. Nothing belongs to me.'
"An ignorant person says, 'Oh, God is there-very far off.' The man of Knowledge knows
that God is right here, very near, in the heart; that He has assumed all forms and dwells in
all hearts as their Inner Controller."

Namaskar.
