Animals and plants
« on: June 04, 2011, 11:44:54 PM »
Do animals and plants have souls?
Can animals be reborn as humans?
I ask because animals (and I think plants too) can suffer, but what can they do to reach moksha?

Dear Jyoti,

Animals, fish, birds and plants have jiva hood [i.e soul] and also
the mind.  However very rarely by God or Guru's Grace, these can
get liberation, without being born as humans.  The examples are:

1. Umapati Sivam, conferred mukti in Chidambaram to a cactus bush.
This is described in Chidambara Maahaatmayam. The cactus bush
was near the Temple outer wall and it had fed itself on the milk
that was flowing after the abhisehkam to Nataraja in the sanctum.
Umapati Sivam found it to be fit enough to earn moksha and conferred moksha to the bush.  The king and priests did not believe the story and Umapati Sivam said that he would prove it next morning in the inner sanctum of Nataraja Temple. When the temple was opened the king and the priests saw the cactus bush near the
Nataraja icon.

2. Sri Bhagavan conferred mukti to Cow Lakshmi.

Under what conditions can animals attain rebirth as humans?
Is that like evolution: after aeons of birth in animal form they attain birth in human form?

Dear Jyoti,

I do not know the conditions and the counts in each type of births.
But Brahmasri Nochur Venkataraman, an authority of Sri Bhagavan's teachings and a living example of Sri Bhagavan's words, says:

The inferior beings if they do minimum injury to others [i.e hunting other animals or insects only for food] and live within the ambit of three basic requirements like, procreation, sleep and food, they will climb the ladder and become a human being in due course.

Insects -> fish -> birds -> animals [ lower like a hippopotamus] ->
animals [higher - cow, lion] -> human being.

As a human being, the ladder is steep. It needs many many births to become self realized.

Human beings can also climb down  the ladder and become animals if life is lived with all six aspects of anger, greed, lust, etc., without any improvement.

Dear kde,

Saint Manikkavacahagar says in Tiruvachakam, Siva Puranam, the first long song:

Pullahi poodai puzhuvai maramai
Pal virugamahi paRavaiyai paampai
Kalla manitharai peyai kaNangalaahi
Ellap piRappum piRanthu iLaithen emperuman
Ponne un pon adigaL kandu inRu veedututren....

The birth list by the saint is : grass, roots, worms, trees and plants,
various animals, birds, snakes, ignorant human beings, devils, angels, I have taken all these births and my soul has become "thin". O Lord, today I saw your golden feet and attained moksha.

Dear kde, Saint Manikkavachagar was born in 3rd century A.D. He was at least 1300 years before Darwin who gave his evolution theory!

Dear Subramanian, it's not a suprise I had a feeling that Darwin was not the first to think of evolution theory. It seems the west has got a lot from India, but doesn't want to admit it. As the saying goes: there is nothing new under the sun.

This up an intresting artical on Esoteric Evolution http://www.mountainrunnerdoc.com/page/page/4566172.htm

Dear kde,

Many such things were known to ancient civilizations like Hindu,
Chinese and Egypitan civilizations.  The West only 'rediscovered' it.

For example,

1. Hindus knew that the earth is spherical. Galielo found it many
centuries later.

2. Hindus said tha the earth is encircled by 7 seas. Pacific, Atlantic,
Arctic, Antarctic, Indus Ocean and one more sea around North Pole.
The discovery of these seas and the earth's spherical shape came to be discovered by the West much later.
