Q:   Is there any drug to promote meditation?

M:   No, because afterwards the user would be unable to meditate without taking it habitually. Those who take opium or alcohol are unconsciously seeking the blissful thoughtless state of the real Self. They get an intimation of that bliss by drugs, but afterwards they must resume their normal state and the craving comes back even stronger until they become chronic addicts and slaves to the substance. With all such artificial stimulants there must be a fall. If the mind is subdued, everything is conquered.

On animals

The Maharshi's care for animals is legendary. After being stung by a scorpion he gave the following response.

I stepped unwittingly on a scorpion and hurt it, so it stung me in return to remind me of its existence.

Animals can think like human beings. We must not imagine they are senseless creatures. Some who have been in contact with people can understand words and conversations. The Maharshi pointed to a cow and said she could think intelligently.

One night, a sleeping snake fell down from the roof of the Ashram hall. The Maharshi ordered the men to take a lantern to light its path to the door and told them not to hurt it. Regarding the snakes, which infested the place, he said, "We have come to their abode as guests and so we have no right to molest them. Let us leave them in peace."

Dear prasanth,

Recently a number of books have come under the title Prani mitra Bhagavan, covering various animals and birds that moved with
Him.

Once a frog suddenly leaped and hit His eye.  His eye became red. The devotees were anxious. Sri Bhagavan said: Nothing,
It says Good Morning to me!

Only a Jivan Mukta can be like that.

Brahmacharya and sexuality

Q: What are the passions?

M: They are the same force that is used in meditation, but diverted into other channels

The news of a devotees marriage was conveyed to the Maharshi.

Q:   Why has he done this? Surely it is a step back?

M:   (Laughing.) Why should marriage interfere with his spiritual progress? Unless bodily wants such as hunger, thirst, and evacuation are satisfied, meditation cannot progress. The results of vichara (Self-Inquiry) meditation, are will-power, developed concentration, control of passions, indifference to worldly objects, virtue and equality to all.

Dear prasanth,

A Jnani or a Jnana Sadhaka can lead any type of life, married or celibate and it does not affect his jnanam or sadhana. Kaduveli
Siddhar married a deva dasi as per her wishes and also got a child. Tondaripodi Azhwar also fell in love with a dancer.  But his
Jnana did not get affected by it.

Q: Isn't brahmacharya (celibacy) necessary?

M: Brahmacharya means "living in Brahman." It has no connection with celibacy as is commonly understood. A real brahmachari finds bliss in Brahman, the same as Self.

Q: But isnt celibacy a requirement for yoga?

M: Yes, it is. It is one of many aids to realization.

Dear sir,

Jnani can perform many activities in the world without any kamana. But seeing them agnani also may do and accumulate papam. Is not it?  The ignorant may argue if jnani can do this why I cannot.  So individual must be very carefull in his sadhana. Is not it?

Dear ramanaduli,

Yes. You cannot ape the guru or a self realized Jnani. It will be more dangerous than not doing anything.

Q: Isn't brahmacharya (celibacy) essential? Can a married person realize the Self?

M: Certainly! Married or unmarried, a person can realize the Self because it is here and now. It is a matter of the fitness of the mind. Have there not been people living with their spouse and family yet attaining realization?

Dear prasanth,

Yes.  Sri Bhagavan has said true celibacy is only internal renounciation of all desires.

Q: Is it better for reaching salvation to be married or celibate?

M: Whatever you think is better. There is no difference. Thoughts must cease and reason disappears. Feeling is the prime factor in meditation, not reason. It ought to come at the right side of the chest, not in the head, because the Heart is there. It must be held tight.

Q: Is marriage a bar to spiritual progress?

M: The householder's life is not a bar, but householders must do their utmost to practice self-control. If a person has a strong desire for the higher life then sexual desire will drop away. When the mind is destroyed the other desires are also destroyed.

Yes. But the problem is that householder who is not Self-realized even if he doesn't want sex, absence of sexual activity becomes a problem for the couple. And this can lead to family issues. It's difficult to be married and to lead a restrained sexual life (just for procreation) in Kali Yuga.
