well said subramanain garu. i agree with you sir. sakthi is not mind and only maya.

Q: Should we think "I am not the ego?"

M: In deep sleep, we do not think whether we are or not; so in the waking state we can also live without thought. Our reality -- and our being in that state -- is the absolute happiness. It is the thinking that makes the ego. The ego is only a thought for us, we are without thoughts. The source of thoughts is within us. If we begin to examine ourselves, we discover our real nature. It is not by mere thought that you get rid of ego, it is by experience. Do not conceive of the thoughtless state as being deep sleep or trance. There is no such thing as realization. There is only the warding off of thoughts. Be the reality and do not waste time keeping on repeating "I am Brahman" a thousand times over. The ego must go on trying to see the source of its own reality.

Dear Prasanth,

Yes. Sri Bhagavan says in Sad Darsanam, Verse 26:

When the ego rises, all things rise with it. When the ego is not, there is nothing else. Since the ego thus is everything,
to question, 'What is this thing?' is the tapas, quest - that results in the extinction of all of things.

Dear Tusnim,

Maya is of two types. She who sports with your mind outurned and create problems is called asuddha maya. One who
merges with Self is Suddha Maya. Suddha Maya is Sakti, Mother etc., What Sri Bhagavan said was the Suddha Maya, Sakti
was acting on His behalf for all His activities.  This concept is explained by Bhaskara Raya in his commentary on Sri Lalita
Sahasranamam.

Dear sir,

Asuddha maya can be called Ego.
we can pray Mother to turn our asuddha maya into suddha maya. Because with human effort it is very difficult to kill the ego.

Q: How can the mind be made to go?

M: No attempt should be made to destroy it. To think or wish is in itself a thought. If the thinker is sought, the thoughts will disappear.

Q: Will they disappear by themselves? It seems so difficult.

M: They will disappear because they are unreal. The idea of difficulty is itself an obstacle to realization. It must be overcome. To remain as the Self is not difficult. This thought of difficulty is the chief obstacle. A little practice in discovering the source of "I" will make you think differently. Absolute freedom from thoughts is the state conducive to such recognition of the Self. Mind is but an aggregate of thoughts.

Dear Prasanth ji,

Thanks for your post. Now you have given another truth. "The idea of difficulty is itself an obstacle to realization. "

First a thought comes.... " I am bound" In real no one is bound
2nd another thought.......  "I should be liberated"   This is also not real
3rd. another thought......  "searching for the solution" from outside
4th another thought.......   "this is correct that is wrong path" ..starting comparing
5th again another thought... " this is difficult"

So these are thoughts which must be overcome.  Bhagavan says.. a little practice in discovering the source of "I"

Again the mind starts to think.. how to practice, when to practice, how long  to practice.

Q: How can we get rid of fear?

M: All fear is nothing more than thoughts. If there is only one, there cannot be a second to be afraid of. If we look to our Self, as it is one, there is nothing else to be afraid of. To think that there is something outside ourselves is the cause of fear, but if we are firmly rooted in our own reality, then there will be no fear, no doubt and no undesirable qualities, as all these are centered around the ego.

The state of equanimity is the state of Bliss.

Q: Has the Self forgotten its true nature?

M: Both oblivion and memory are only thought-forms. They will alternate as long as there are thoughts. Memory and oblivion depend on "I" which, when one looks for it, cannot be found because it is unreal. These truths are not realized because the samskaras (mental tendencies) have not been destroyed. The roots of doubt and confusion are samskaras, which must be cut out. This is done by following the practice prescribed by the guru. The guru leaves it to the seekers to do this part so that they can find out the truth for themselves. Practice renders the seeds of vasanas (inherent tendencies) ineffective.

Do not allow a single mental activity to intrude into your dhyana (meditation). One should continue the practice as long as the ego or a sense of possession are not completely eliminated, i.e. till you can, at will and without effort, keep the mind free of concepts or activities. Otherwise you must go on with the practice.

People often misunderstand samadhi (absorption in Self). Bhagavan told the story of a yogi who spent hundreds of years in a trance beside the River Ganges, whose first thought on awakening was for some water he had requested before entering the trance. The thoughts had resumed, so the trance was useless. Real attainment, said the Maharshi, was to be fully conscious, to be aware of people and one's surroundings, to move among them all, yet not to merge one's consciousness in the environment, but to retain an inner independent awareness of That. This is the highest, not sitting in a trance, which merely halts the mind. The mind must be destroyed entirely, not merely arrested.

The Intellect and Learning

The intellect always seeks to have external knowledge, rejecting knowledge of its own origin. The mind is only the identification of the Self with the body. It is a false ego that is created; it creates false phenomena in its turn and appears to move in them. If the false identity vanishes the Reality becomes apparent. This does not mean that Reality is not there now. It is always there and eternally the same.

Knowledge implies the result of impressions on one's consciousness.

Doubt or uncertainty is for the mind or intellect and has no place in the perfection of Realization.

Q: Then is all our intellectual progress worth nothing?

M: Whose intellect is progressing? Find out.

Q: How does the intellect help?

M: Only in making one sink the intellect in the ego and the ego in the Self. After realization, all intellectual loads are thrown overboard as flotsam. Whose is the intellect? It is man's. Intellect is only an instrument. To reach the Self it must vanish.

Pride of learning and the desire for appreciation are condemned, not the learning itself. Education and learning which lead to the search for Truth and humility are good.
