Q: My friend is keen to do social service work, even at the expense of his own interests.

M: His selfless work is helpful; its utility cannot be denied. See how he has continued to work there (where he is) and how you sent him the extract from these conversations. There is a link between the two. The work purified his mind so that he gained an insight into the wisdom of sages rather readily. Social work has a place in the scheme of spiritual uplift. The work is social and not selfish. God is kept in view all along. The public good is identical with one's own good. Such activities of the body and mind purify the mind. Thus good social work is a way to render the mind purer.

Dear prasanth,

Yes. The doubts regarding social work and participating in freedom movement, were asked
by many devotees and Sri Bhagavan had givmen the standard reply.  Very rarely depending on the questioner, He made some minor variations.

Q: But social work does not give us leisure for meditation!

M: Of course, one's efforts cannot end with social work. The outlook should always be on the highest truth. Everything will come right in time.

Q: How can we remove the spiritual sloth of others?

M: Have you removed your own? Turn your inquiries towards Self-search. The force set up within you will then operate on others too.

Dear prasanth, Nagaraj,

Throughout His life in Tiruvannamalai, for 54 long years, Sri Bhagavan has been teaching only
Search within. Find out who you are!  He never encouraged anyone to go out and correct others.
He never encouraged people to do social reforms or even to go for freedom struggle etc.,
Ultimately if some had gone, itbwas only their prarabdha.

Q: What about Paul Bruntons idea of inspired action?

M: Let activities go on. They do not affect the pure Self. The difficulty is that people think they are the doer. This is a mistake. It is the higher power which does everything and people are only tools. If they accept that position they will be free from troubles, otherwise they court them. The sculptured figure on the temple tower shows great strain, but really, the tower rests on the ground, and that supports the figure. The figure is a part of the tower, but is made to look as if it is bearing the weight of the tower. Is it not funny? It is the same with the person who takes on himself the sense of doing.

Q: What is your opinion of social reform?

M: Self-reform automatically brings about social reform. Confine yourself to self-reform. Social reform will take care of itself

Somebody commented that the Bhagavad Gita preached karma yoga, (yoga of action) because it taught that one should act with selfless motives.

M: No. This can only be achieved after knowing the illusoriness of the ego, i.e. jnana (knowledge of Self). Hence it really teaches jnana yoga, which is the highest, and that we should act by letting the Universal act through us.

Dear prasanth,

Yes. Nochur Acharya Venkataraman used to say:-  The message of Srimad Bhagavat Gita is
--to make you understand the art of being and not art of acting.

Q: I am a doctor. How can I best heal people?

M: The permanent cure is jnana (knowledge of Self); the patients must realize it for themselves, and that depends on their maturity. Otherwise, when one disease goes another will come.

A young man came and demanded to be given powers to stamp out the world's materialism.

M:   People who are incapable themselves, ask for divine powers to be utilized for human welfare. This is like the lame man who said he would overpower the enemy if only he were helped to his feet! The intention is good but there is no sense of proportion.

Q: How can I help others?

M:    What other is there for you to help? Who is the "I" that is going to help others? First clear up that point and then everything will settle itself.

Dear prasanth,

Welcome back to India. I am also back in India yesterday. Trying to help others through social work, social service etc.,
will only add to one's ego's size. One should be humble and treat others with love and concern but should not enter
the field stating that he would help others. This will not help progressing in one's way. Each one has got a different
prarabdha and one cannot try to change another man's prarabdha.  He should remain in his own life and do sadhana.
On realization, he would understand that all are Brahmaswarupam. At the same time, Sri Bhagavan recommended to show
concern, love and affection to all fellow beings. How can someone who has got his own prarabdha, can set right another
man's prarabdha. However this is not selfishness.

Q: In the West people cannot see how sages in solitude can be helpful.

M: Never mind Europe and America. Where are they except in your mind? If you wake up from a dream, do you try to ascertain if the people of your dream creation are also awake?

Have compassionate love for others but keep it secret; do not make a display of it, or talk about it. If your desires are fulfilled, do not be elated; and if you are frustrated do not be disappointed. The elation may be deceptive; it should be checked, for initial joy may end in final grief. After all, whatever happens, you remain unaffected, just as you are.

Q: But how can I help another with his problems?

M: What is this talk of another? There is only the One. Try to realize there is no I, no you, no he, only the one Self which is all. If you believe in the problem of another, you are believing in something outside the Self. You will help him best by realizing the oneness of everything, rather than by outward activity.

Dear prasanath,

Yes. While Sri Bhagavan helped a number of people though not materially but by solving their individual problems, and though
He showed compassion towards other living beings like squirrels, dogs, monkeys, deer, cow, He did not recommend anyone to
take up large scale helping of others through philanthropic activities and social work.  Without knowing oneself, i.e without
attaining the Self, if one goes for all these external activities, such activities will only make the ego only become bigger and arrogant.
I have done this; I have done that; such attitude will develop with arrogance and pride. So He exhorted any one who came to Him,
to first find out who he really is. If this self knowledge is attained, then one will understand that there is really no 'other' to help !
He used to say: There is no ajnani. All are Jnanis. Why Jnanis, there is only Jnanam !

Arunachala Siva.
