On Daily Life

You yourself are the source of all your happiness, whatever it may be, and not external things. Even when you imagine that some external object has given you the happiness, you are mistaken. What really happened is that unconsciously the object brought you back to your Self for an instant, borrowed the happiness, and thus presented it to you. The happiness came as a shadow to you; why not look to the source, to the Self, and realize it?

Dear prasanth,

No possession of external objects, money, house, women, children, delicious food can never confer happiness for a person.
The fact that one can be happy without any possessions is evident from one's deep sleep, every night. Sri Bhagavan says in
Who am I?:  Even if something pleasant happens to you and even if some unpleasant happens to a person whom you dislike,
the mind returns to the Self and enjoy Atma Sukam.

Q:   What are the first steps to spiritual practice?

M:   In the beginning, people have to be told that they are not the body because they think that they are only the body, whereas they are the body and everything else. The body is only a part. The aspirant should know this firmly. He must first discern chit (the sentient) from jada (the insentient) and be the chit only. Later let him realize that jada is nothing other than chit. This is discrimination. The initial viveka (discrimination) must persist to the end, and its fruit is moksha (liberation).

Q: What is the best way of living?

M:   It depends on whether one is a jnani (realized) or not. A jnani does not find anything different or separate from the Self.

Everything is in the Self. The universe and what is beyond are to be found in the Self. The outlook differs according to the sight of the person, based on whether he is realized or not.

Q:   How is mouna (silence) possible when we are engaged in worldly transactions?

M:   When women walk with water pots on their heads, they are able to talk with their companions while all the time remaining intent on the water above. Similarly, when a sage engages in activities, they do not disturb him because his mind abides in Brahman.

The difficulty is that people think they are the doer; it is a mistake. It is the higher power which does everything and people are only a tool. If they accept that position, they will be free from troubles; otherwise they court them. Do your work without anticipating its fruits. That is all that you should do.

Q:   What kind of teaching is suitable for young people -- they would not understand the naked truth?

M:    Their attention might be drawn to the truth from time to time in an appropriate way.

Dear Prasanth,

This is what happened in the case of Indira daughter, G.V. Subbaramayya.

Q: Why is the world in ignorance?

M: Let the world take care of itself. If you are the body, then there the gross world appears. If you are the spirit, everything is just spirit. Look for the ego, and it vanishes. If you inquire, ignorance will be found to be non-existent. It is the mind which feels misery and darkness. See the Self.

Q: If one always remembers the Self, will one's actions always be right?

M: They ought to be, but such a person is not concerned with the right or wrong of actions. His actions are God's and therefore right.

Dear prasanth,

Yes. For a person, who ever is in the thought of the Self, God takes charge of
that person,s life and activities. Sri Bhagavan saya in AAMM, Verse 70:

No sooner I remembered your name, you pulled me to you, who can know your
glory, O Arunachala!

Arunachala Siva.

Q: Is it useful to bring the East and the West closer?

M: Such events will take place automatically. There is a power guiding the destinies of nations. These questions arise only when you have lost touch with reality.

Q: Is it harder for Westerners to withdraw inwards?

M: Yes, they are rajasic (more active mentally) -- their energy goes outwards. We must be inwardly quiet, not forgetting the Self -- then externally we can go on with our activities. Does a man who is on the stage acting a female role forget that he is a man? Similarly, we too must play our parts on the stage of life, but without identifying ourselves with those parts.

Q: What is the difference between West and East?

All religions state one God. Does that mean, that one god stated by different religions become different? All religions point out to the one source from where everything has come.

Ekam Sat Viprah Bahuda Vadanti

Truth is one, the Sages call it differently.

How can anyone have two mothers? Mother is one.

Paths are different, Goal is One.

Sweets are different, Sweetness is one.

Beings are many, Soul is one

Salutations to Bhagavan

Remain quietly in the Self.

Dear prasanth, Nagaraj,

Yes. Sri Bhagavan says in Sri Arunachala Ashtakam, Verse 5:

Like the thread which runs through the rubies, (in a necklace), it is You (Arunachala) who
remains in all religions.....

Arunachala Siva.
