Dear fellow Ramana,
Though I have been reading about the  teachings of Bhagavan since 1985 ,  I have been   able to put into pracice only NAma JApa of ""Ärunachala Siva"and "Om NAmo BHagavate Shri Ramanaya".
Further I have not been able to bring about feelings into this Nama Japa practice .
Will it still help in progress towards self realization or self enquiry.
Regards,
Anand Sundaram.

Dear Ananda Sundaram,

Yes. Everything starts with bhakti only.  This Nama Japa is quite
useful and when it becomes one pointed without the mind jumping
towards other thoughts, it becomes mature.  And the Nama [or Name] is not different from the Self.  After a good progress, the devotee who chants the name will become the Name itself.  And that is Self Realization.  Sri Bhagavan used to say that Bhakti is Jnana Matha.

Dear Sri Anand Sundaram,

The efficacy of Nama Japa has never been doubted and is practiced as a proven spiritual sadhana from time immemorial.   Sri Bhagwan says ( Talk-526) that repetition of the Name of one’s chosen Deity is remembrance of what it signifies and therein lies its efficacy and merit. Sri Bhagwan explains it thus :

One bears a name to which he answers when called by that name. But one is not born with that name written, nor does it say to anybody that it bears such and such a name. Still you are a given a name and you answer to that name. Why ? Because one identifies himself with that name. So, Sri Bhagwan says that the Name signifies something and it is not a mere fiction. Similarly, God’s or Guru’s Name is effective and efficacious because it signifies the remembrance of what it signifies and hence, it is a meritorious practice or sadhana.

Thank you,
    Anil

Dear Anand Sundaram and Anil,

Most of us cannot start off with the practice of self inquiry, though
Sri Bhagavan says it is very simple and direct.  Even then we are so much used to nama japa.  Sri Bhagavan did not discourage this. Only thing is, it should be done with ardent devotion.  An ardent devoteee doing nama japa will become that Nama itself at the end.  Then,
there will be no need for self inquiry since the purpose is achieved.  Or, one can do nama japa and then slowly start with the self inquiry also.  Both need efforts and perseverance.

Why take this hard way?
The simplest the fastest the most direct is self inquiry. There is no other.

Dear All..

Yes Nama Japa is very powerful too..  There is no one single medicine for everybody, like Bhagwan recommended different style for different people based on their maturity.

When it comes to Nama Japa, it should be done by the mind as Bhagwan said.  Rather than saying it out, he recomended saying it by mind. One can start with pronouncing with tongue mildly and slowly stop using tongue and produce the sound just in mind.. This takes one deeper..  That goes deep inside slowly.  This is really possible.  Everyone might have undergone day dreaming or thinking of something else sitting in class room or work place or anywhere else..  When those thoughts or scenes in mind can be brought easily without opening mouth or moving tongue, why not a small syllable. It really comes for an earnest seeker who is willing to give up anything and everything for the Atma Jnana.

As one takes the nama japa deeper and deeper, it dissolves at the very bottom. And, another short cut here Bhagwan says is - at some point of time find out who or what is that uttering the word or mantra without the help of tongue or mouth, there one can try to differentiate the ego and conscious.. holding to that should be fine I believe.

Anyways, when we want something that is not working out, keep praying for it from Bhagwan every now and then.. HE is ready it give it immediately.

With Love
Balasaras Krishna

Dear saraskrishna,

Yes. I fully agree with you.  Instead of suffering from multifarious
thoughts, keep one thought i.e. Nama or Name and here too chant in inaudibly within lips and then with the mind.
