Vibhuti - a strange remedy!
« on: August 05, 2010, 04:33:07 PM »
My mother used to swallow vibhuti (sacred ash) endlessly. All our efforts to wean her away from that habit were in vain. She too wanted to get out of it but could not. She could take liberties with Bhagavan. She woudl regard him as her father and he in turn would regard her like a child. The real secret is that Bhagavan's attitude towards us would correspond to ours towards him.

One day my mother told Bhagavan about this habit of hers and sought his help to get over it. Bhagavan said, "Why did you not tell me about this earlier? All right, taste this vibhuti." What a strange remedy! Yet it worked. From then on my mother completely got rid of her habit.

Dear Nagaraj,

Excellent.

Swallowing Vibhuti in large quantities may not be a good habit.
But a small pinch of Vibhuti taken from Temple as God's prasad
and Vibhuti given by a Brahma Jnana Guru will certainly make
miracles.  In Tiru Jnana Sambandar's Tevaram, there is one
Tiru Neetru Padigam., Decad on Vibhuti [tiru neeru in Tamizh].
This describes how by applying Vibhuti, and chanting Panchakshara, Sambandar cured the Pandya King's delirious fever.

Mantra is holy ash.
That which is worn by the gods is holy ash,
Beauty is holy ash,
That which is praised is holy ash,
Tantra is holy ash,
The meaning of religion is holy ash,
The Sacred ash of holy Alavay's* Lord,
who shares his form
with Uma of full red lips.

(* Madurai, refers to Sundareswara)

The Vedas' content is holy ash,
The allaying of bitter pain is holy ash,
The granting of wisdom is holy ash.
That which removes ignorance is holy ash.
That which is worthy to be sung is holy ash,
That which exists is holy ash,
The Sacred ash of the Lord of holy Alavay
surrounded by rice fields that chill waters flood.

That which bestows liberation is holy ash.
That which worn by sages is holy ash.
That which is Truth is holy ash.
What great ones praise is holy ash.
That which inspires devotion is holy ash.
That which brings attainment is holy ash,
the Sacred ash of the Lord of holy Alavay.

Dear I,

Wonderful post. Vibhuti in Sanskrit means manifestation or power, and the Vibhuti Pada Patanjali yoga sutra deals with ultimate concentration and meditation which allows integration of the soul with the Divine. It deals with sacrificing all earthly cravings and emotions, letting go of the ego or Self (I), and attaining self realization.

Even in Bible, we have dust to dust and ashes to ashes, meaning everything one day becomes Bhashma, therefore when we put vibhuti everyday on our forehead, we have to remind ourselves about the limitedness of our bodies, which is one day going to merge with earth.

Dear Nagaraj,

I agree.  In Saiva Siddhantam, there are prescriptions as to how
to use the Vibhuti.  This is described in Tirumandiram, of Tirumoolar, in Book X of Saiva Canons.  A few prescriptions are:-

1.  In the Siva temples, one should take the Vibhuti only by right
hand with left hand and a towel on the lower side, so that Vibhuti
will not fall on the earth.

2.  If Vibhuti is in excess quantity, it should be applied to the chest
but not thrown on the pillars of the temple.

3.  Vibhuti can be mixed with water in small quantities and can be
drunk for curing ailments.

4. Vibhuti can also be applied for cure of an ailing person, on his chest and shoulders and stomach.

5.  If Vibhuti + water paste can be applied on 12 parts of the body,
viz., three places on the chest and waist, three places on either hands and on the forehead, and also on the two sides of the back shoulder.

6. Vibhuti + water paste can be made into small balls and consumed as medicine.  [This is done in Vaitheeswaran Kovil
in Tamizh Nadu and also in Nanjangud in Karnataka.]
