O Mind, what avails this agitation over UNREAL!
« on: July 26, 2010, 10:58:51 AM »
Vairaagya Shatakam

Tasmaadanantamajaram Paramam Vikaasi
tadbrahma Chintaya Kimebhirasadvikalpai |
Yasyaanushangina Ime Bhuvanaadhipatya
Bhogaadayah Krupanalokamataa Bhavanti  ||69||

What avails all this agitating over the unreal?
Meditate, therefore, on that supreme, infinite,
ageless, effulgent Brahman, in the light of which
all such enjoyments as the sovereignty of the
world appear as the desires of pitiable men!

Paataalamavishasi Yaasi Nabho Vilanghya
Din.mandalam Bhramasi Maanasa Chaapalena |
Bhraantyaapi Jaatu Vimalam Kathamaatmaniinam
Na Brahma Sansmarasi Nirvrutimesha Yena ||70||

Being thus agitated, O mind, thou (now) descendest
into the nether regions, (now) soarest up beyond
the skies, and Wanderest all around the four quarters.
Why, even by mistake, thou dost not once concentrate
on that Brahman, of the nature of Self and bereft of all
imperfections, whereby you may attain supreme bliss! ||70||

Salutations to Sri Ramana
॥ शांतमात्मनि तिष्ट ॥
Remain quietly in the Self.

Dear Nagaraj,

Splendid verses.  Muruganar says in Guru Vachaka Kovai:

Verse 148: Those crazy-minded people who do not know as real,
anything other than the objects of the senses, and who are thereby
ruined, will term the Jnana that flourishes luxuriantly through dispassion towards sense objects as 'dry Vedanta'.

Verse 149:  The non dual experience will only be attained by those
who have completely given up desires.  For those with desires, it is
far, far away.  Hence it is proper for those with desires, to direct
their desires towards God, who is desireless, so that through desire
for God, the desires that arise through the delusion that the objects exist and are different from oneself will become extinct.

S.S. Cohen's Guru Ramana says about one conversation:

Question:  We know that the pleasures of this world are useless
and even painful, yet we long for them.  What is the way of ending that longing?

Bhagavan:  Think of god and attachments will gradually drop from
you.  If you wait till all desires disappear to start your devotion
and prayer, you will have to wait a very very long time indeed.
Arunachala Siva.

Dear Subramanian and Nagaraj Garu,

Destroying all the desires is not possible and humans cannot do karma without having a desire.

And humans cannot live even for a minute without doing karma as even breathing also comes under karma.

But as guru ramana says small desires which will not implant vasanas are fine.

"Small desires such as the desire to eat, drink and sleep and attend to calls of nature, though these may also be classed among desires, you can safely satisfy. They will not implant vasanas in your mind, necessitating further birth. Those activities are just necessary to carry on life and are not likely to develop or leave behind vasanas or tendencies. As a general rule, therefore, there is no harm in satisfying a desire where the satisfaction will not lead to further desires by creating vasanas in the mind. (Day by Day with Bhagavan, 12th April, 1946) "
