The science or sadhanam of Atma Vichara is further explained in
this Verse 28 of ULLadu Narpadu, says T.R. Kanakammal.  Her
further comments are:-

If one wants to know the source of 'I' - the form of the sense of
doership - one should dive deep and know oneself with single
pointed attention, undistracted and subtle reasoning with peace
of mind, restraint of speech and breath with the place of origin of
the ego, as target.  It is like plunging into water to recover an
article which had fallen in, having its place as the target.

Speech is but thought.  Breath is just the movement of vital air.
The verse stresses the need for both to be controlled.  When thoughts, the cause of oscillation and movement of mind, and prana [breath], the cause of movements of instruments of action and
perception and the inner organs, subside and become motionless,
the heart become a deep waveless ocean. Bhagavan Ramana also says the same thing in Verse 12 and 13 of Upadesa Undiyar. He
has also said that prana and mind are the one and the same. Prana is the gross form of the mind - says Bhagavan Ramana in Who am I?  Heart and life, awareness and action, are the two branches of the same root.

This quest for the source of ego, demands efforts.  It demands a very sharp and subtle intellect and dispassion of a high order; for the sharpness of the weapon determines the extent of annihilation effected.  One should find the source with a vigilant and discerning eye and plunge in.  This calls for great courage and determination, which provide the litmus test for desire for liberation.

The realized sages say that but for the grace of the guru, the loss of ego self or the gain of awareness of existence cannot be ensured.  With the mere knowledge of the ego self, diving deep within, one cannot objectify and know the rise of ego.  The searching mind itself is drowned, and apart from "That which is", the existing Awareness, there is no other awareness to announce It.  To abide as Awareness is to know it, and to know it is to announce it or reveal it.

Though this sadhana is advocated as a preliminary sadhana,.this in itself is the final one too.  Heart is the place to be reached and finally Heart is Awareness. 

A seeker strengthening himself with stern dispassion must dive into the heart with single pointedness and concentration and gain the treasure, the Heart, the Self. - is the teaching of Bhagavan Ramana.
