Talk 207.

Deep sleep is only the state of non-duality. Can the difference between the individual and Universal souls persist there? Sleep implies forgetfulness of all differences: This alone constitutes happiness. See how carefully people prepare their beds to gain that happiness. Soft cushions, pillows and all the rest are meant to induce sound sleep, that is to say to end wakefulness.

And yet the soft bed, etc., are of no use in the state of deep sleep itself. The implication is that all efforts are meant only to end ignorance. They have no use after realisation.

Once Pattinathar, a great Siva Jnani was sleeping on the outer
portals of a house, without bed and pillows and was in good sleep.
The king of the country, had no proper sleep, in spite of soft silken bed
and pillows and good drinks beside, and two beautiful girls fanning
him from either side of the bed.  He came to visit his subjects and
saw Pattinathar and was aghast.  How come this guy who had
no proper bed and pillows could have nice sleep and be happy?
He waited for Pattinathar to wake up and then asked for the reason.
Pattinathar replied:  I always sleep in Swatma Tirtham (the cool
waters of the Self-realized state) and so I need no other special
comforts.  "How come you are self realized at this young age, despite poverty and begging food?", the king pursued.  Pattinathar
replied:  "Because, I have overcome all Ignorance in life, and keep my mind ever in the Self."  {The same sentence, Bhagavan has said
in Who am I? to describe Jnanam.}

The king then asked one final question. "Then, how is that you are
superior to me, is it because, you are self realized and I am not?"

Pattinathar said:  "Yes.  That is why, you are standing and asking
questions and I am sitting and answering you!"

Arunachala Siva.
