T.R. Kanakammal writes:  "Those seized with the fear of death,
obtaining refuge at the feet of the Lord, gain "death."  Here the
"death means what they gain is not "death" but "death of self hood,"
or self's identification with the ego due to vasanas, which is the cause of all misery.  It is but mukti, liberation.  'Dying without
dying' is to win the eternal life, delivered from the cycle of births and deaths.

mahesan charaname charvar - those who seek the feet of Siva.
the Lord of all, as refuge;
tam charvodu - along with their bondage of attachments and relationships;
tam chaavuttrar - the jiva bodha is removed and annihilated;
chavaa davar chaavennam - gaining immortality; Thought of death,
chaaaro- will they such jivan muktas, ever again entertain?
nittar - nityar - they live forever.

The life of the Jiva is one stretch of misery and suffering because
of vasanas, latent tendencies, or worldly existence, by nature is
objectified.  It is a "fallen state" by having been enstranged from
the essence or the innermost being, ULLadu, ULLa PoruL.

Why all these fears including fear of death comes?  Fear comes
because of the thought of a second.  Scriptures say 'dwiteeya bhayam bhavati'.  When one reaches the state that he is non-
different from Siva, either through total surrender (or through
self enquiry), he has not fear for anything, because there is nothign
else, excepting the eternal Self or Sivam.

Bhagavan Ramana says in Talks No. 567:-  "Owing to the "I am the
body" notion, death is feared as being loss of Oneself.  Birth and death pertain to the body only, but they are superimposed on the
Self, giving rise to the delusion that birth and death relate to the
self. Bhagavan again says in Talks No. 201: "Learn what surrender
is.  It is to merge in the Source of the ego. "

Bhagavan also has said that total surrender or self surrender and
self enquiry are both the two sides of the same coin.

Thus the benedictory verse 2, speaks of surrender to Siva, while
the first benedictory verse, speaks of self enquiry.  Both are same,
if followed sincerely by a true seeker.

This verse draws attention to the two levels of experience.  At one,
fear of death drives one to the feet of the Lord, seeking His refuge.
At another, no such fear arises due to the advaitic experience of
unity, which is the state of fearlessness and deathlessness.  All
forty verses of the main treatise exude Bhagavan's advaitic experience.  Though the first verse describes the transcendent
Absolute, and the second one the Immanent, along with jnana
and bhakti, respectively, both ultimately refer to the same Reality, for prapatti, or saranagati or surrender, is the same as Jnana or

Bhagavan Ramana said about self enquiry to Kavyakanta Ganapati Muni, when the latter held His feet and asked for peace.  He said: "Find out the place in which all your mantra sounds get
quisecent."  For Mother Azhagamma, He said about total surrender.  "If everything is ordained by God, those for which we try that they should happen, will not happen, and those for which we never try for happening will happen.  So, the best course is to keep silent."

Brahmasri Nochur Venkataraman says that in these two benedictory verses, the entire teaching of Sad Darsanam is complete.  The main 40 verses of the treatise are only elaboration of the teaching given here.
