Nandi continues:

Adi Arunachalap per adhbhuta lingattu urukkoL
Adi naL Margazhi yil Adirai yaj jothi yezhum
Isanai mal mun amarar etti vazhi patta naL
Masi Sivaratri yam matru.

Famed from hoary times as Adi (primordial) Arunachala
assuming the form of wonderful and effulgent Linga,
the first time it appeared was the auspicious day of star
Adirai (Ardra) in the Tamil month of Margazhi (Dhanur) that
is in between December and January.  The Lord who thus
appeared in the form of Light, Vishnu, Brahma, Indra and
other gods worshipped and praised in the Tamil month of
Masi (Magha) on Sivaratri in the middle of night.

Ardra or Adirai is the auspicious day for Siva.  On that day,
the Siva Lingam appeared.  Ardra in the constellation of Orion
is the red star and the light takes 1 light year to reach the
earth.  Onc can imagine the distance at which it is.  It is also
the oldest star of the galaxy, as per astronomers.   Vishnu,
Brahma and Indra and other gods, praised and worshipped
Siva on the night of Sivaratri in the month of Masi.  Sivaratri
is a holy night in which Saivites keep vigil without sleep and
pray to Siva.   They use bhilwa and do archana for Siva.

Arunachala Siva.
