Heart and the Heart-Centre
« on: November 14, 2009, 12:22:47 PM »
On the afternoon 23rd May 1946, Bhagavan Ramana was
explaining the following to Mr. Poonja, a Punjabi, upon
his question:

" I ask you to see where the "I" arises in your body, but it is
really not quite correct to say that the "I" rises from and merges in the Heart in the right side of the chest.  The Heart is another
name for the Reality and It is neither inside nor outside the
body.  There can be no in or out for it.  Since It alone is.  I do
not mean by 'heart' any physiological organ or any plexus of
nerves or anything like that, but so long as one identifies oneself
with the body, and thinks he is in the body he is advised to see
where in the body the "I-thought" rises and merges again.  It
must be the Heart, at the right side of the chest since every man, of whatever race and religion and in whatever language he may be
saying "I", points to the right side of the chest to indicate himself.  This is so all over the world, so that must be the place.  And
by keenly watching the daily emergence of the "I-thought" on
waking and its subsiding in sleep, one can see that it is in
the heart on the right side."

Although Ramana is apparently not saying that one should do this on leaving and going to sleep, it would seem like good advice -- like cold water in the face in the morning and puffing up your pillow at night...

Frankly, in the morning, I often get a case of, "what nonsense all this stuff is!", so I am going to remember to take Ramana's advice and watch for this emergence and subsiding -- before the cold water and after puffing up my pillow....
There's a glory in the morning because the earth turns 'round, and a promise in the evening, when the sun goes down.

It is said by Bhagavan Ramana on some other occasion, that
as soon as one gets up in the morning, one should spend a minute
as to what was his state about one hour before.  You will, with
this practice, slowly understand that you were in the Self, in
anandamaya kosa, during sleep.  This practice, it is my experience,
helps one to know one's state of abidance in the Self, not only
in sleep (which one can understand easily), but also for ever.

If this practice is continued also before going to sleep, then one
will remain in sleep in perfect abidance in Self, without any dreams
and intermittent waking up during nights.
