Sravanam, Mananam.....
« on: October 17, 2009, 04:06:31 PM »
Srimad Bhagavatam and other holy texts prescribe Sravanam,
(hearing), Mananam (remembering), etc., as the pre-requisites
for Atma Nivedanam, that is giving away our individual soul to
the Great Soul or Brahman.  But Atma Vichara, are there such
pre-requisites?

Srimad Bhagavatam also says:  Where is bhakti, where is bhakta,
where is sravanam, where is mananam, where is nidhidhyasanam,
where is nirvikalpam...?  There is only ajnana-nivrutti, that is
removal of ignorance.

In Jnana Vichara or self enquiry, there is only internal sravanam,
internal mananam, etc.,  All sub-requisites will abide in Atma
Vicharam.

Bhagavan Ramana says in Sad Darsanam, Verse 29:

Without telling I, I, I..find out deep within from this I, I, I,
projects itself, seek That and that is Jnana Vichara.

What is the use of discussing all the pre-requisites, without
delving deep within?

Brahmasri Nochur Venkataraman said in one incident during
September Satsangh.

There was one debate in Kaladi among Sanskrit pandits, where
there were hotly discussing various aspects of Atma Nivedana.
At one point, the debate became mutual shouting.  No one
understood anything.  Many did not understand even Sanskrit.
One old lady was telling another:  "Why these fellows are
fighting in Sanskrit?  They can at least fight in Malayalam or
Tamil!"
