The tragedy of considering Guru as the Body - 3
« on: October 07, 2009, 11:40:26 AM »
Bhagavan Ramana has on several instances, told the visitors/
devotees that Atma Jnana is the only cure.  Even to people
who came for solving his financial problems or for the agony
of death of kith and kin, He has given only self enquiry as the
cure.  He can give only what is sublime.

Today, the Indians, particularly South Indians and people in
Tamil Nadu are obsessed with astrology.  They go to one
astrologer or the other for various solutions.  They are prescribed
with visiting this temple or that, doing pujas for the nine planets,
wearing this gem or that gem, and all that crap. These astrologers make a ton of money in this jugglery.  The transition of Saturn
makes a lakh of people to go to Tiru Nallaru in Puduchery state,
to make pujas to Saturn.

Sri Sankara says in his Maha Vakya Tarpanam:

Why are you worried about Ashtami and Navami, (the eighth
and ninth days after full moon and new moon)?  Go to a Guru
who will give you upadesa of Tatvamasi.

Asat kalpartakam basathe

He by whose light, the universe which is unreal (and makes
you to consider all unreal as real),

Sakshat tattvamasi veda vachasa yo bodhayatchritan.....

The Guru graciously teaches the truth of Brahman, to the
disciples seeking refuge in him and who is realized through
the comprehension of the meaning of the great Vedic dictum
tatvamasi, You are That, which alone puts an end to this
cycle of samsara.....

                    - Sri Dakshinamurty Stotram, Verse 3.

The real guru is like the friend who is sleeping with you.
You are dreaming all sorts of dreams, some terrifying dreams
too.  The friend only wakes you up.  He does not give you
solutions for that terrifying dreams. The terrifiying dreams
end on their own accord, once you wake up. That is all.

Arunachala Siva.
