Sri Narayana Guru
« on: September 05, 2009, 01:25:41 PM »
Sri Narayana Guru's 155th Jayanti (birth anniversary) was celebrated
in Kerala and other centres, yesterday, where he had established Maths.  Sri Narayana Guru was born in a scheduled caste but was quite learned in Sanskrit and Vedanta.  He worked tirelessly for removing the casteism that had prevailed in India, particularly in Kerala, where Namboodri Brahmins were treating them badly.  But at the same time Narayana Guru was a great advaitic vedanti.  He had a Math in Kanchipuram and his disciples used to come to the Hill and have darshan of Bhagavan Ramana, in 1920s and 1930s.  Once when
Narayana Guru was in Kanchipuram, his disciples wanted him to
meet Bhagavan Ramana.  So, he came to the Arunachala Hill with a
few disciples.  He came to the Cave and was sitting outside.  Bhagavan
Ramana did not have any movement of mind, just because he had
come.  He came out of the Cave after sometime and sat with Narayana
Guru.  Narayana Guru became speechless in seeing Bhagavan.  Here
is a completely realized soul, who did not see anyone other than Brahman and hence had no movement of anxiety or a false disposition
of respect etc.,  Bhagavan Ramana asked Narayana Guru in chaste
Malayalam: Can we have lunch?  Narayana  Guru said in Tamil:
Aha, we can eat Swami's prasadam.  Bhagavan and Narayana Guru then took their food, Narayana Guru, his own lunch brought by disciples and Bhagavan Ramana, whatever had been prepared
on that day in the Hill.  Narayana Guru took some food from Bhagavan Ramana too.  Then, Bhagavan Ramana looked at him intently for a few minutes.  He smiled. Then, He left as usual, for his stroll to the Hill!

Narayana Guru asked for paper and pencil from his disciples and wrote the famous Nirvritti Panchakam.  He has said:

"When someone comes to Him, He does not ask, What is your name?
Wherefrom have you come?  What is your age?  What is your caste?
Where is your house?  What is your work?  What is your age?  I
salute Him, the totally self realized being, who never vacillates with
any thoughts and treat everyone as He.  I, Narayanan, salute Him!"

Narayana Guru was in fact, the forerunner of Mahatma Gandhi in
removing caste-differences in society.  He had high regard for
Bhagavan Ramana.  Whenever someone visited him in Kerala, he used to ask:  "Have you seen Maharshi?  Go and see that King Cobra first.
Otherwise your life is a waste!"  He used to send herbal fluids (lehyams) for Bhagavan Ramana to cure His cough and weaknesses.
Bhagavan Ramana used to tell Kunju Swami to reply to Narayana Guru in Malayalam when such medicines were received.

Narayana Guru on return to Kerala,  wrote another five verses titled Brahma Sthiti Panchakam on Bhagavan Ramana and sent it to the Hill.

Arunachala Siva.
