Thinking and Thought-ing

Brahmasri Nochur Venkataraman says that we are thinking as
well as thought-ing!  Thinking is somewhat deliberate and one
puts some efforts to think.  But 'thought-ing' just happens, whether
you make efforts or no efforts.  These are like vague drawings in
your mind-stuff.  Suppose you are 35, then the happenings of
recent past or deep past produces these vague drawings.  These
are all the products of your achievement or guilt for non achievement
or doing something, which one thinks is wrong.

I am giving some illustrations:

1. When you were 5, on a day in the school, you urinated in your
trousers.  The teacher punishes you.

2.  When you were 7, you have stolen your classmate's Cadbury

3.  When you are 9, you felt attracted towards of a girl of higher
age or higher class.

4.  You imagine a calf love for your young lady teacher, who is 25.

5. When you were 10, you failed in your class.  Your father beat you.
The memories are still haunting you.

6. When you were 12, your mother died.

7.  When you were 14, you smoked your first cigarette like a

8.  When you were 15, you saw the re-run of the movie of Raquel
Welch, the voluptuous heroine, in Rex theatre, with an elderly
class mate.

9.  When you were 16, you understood your manhood.

10. When you were 17, you did not score enough grades, you
missed your dream of a seat, in medical college.  You ended up
with physics graduation course.

11. You taste your first glass of brandy, when you were 18.

12.  You write some love letters to the girl in the college, when
you were 19.

13. At 22, you join a job as government clerk and live alone in
the city.

14.  At 24, your first taste of cannabin.

15. At 25, your first pre-marital sex.

16.  At 28, you get married and feel enormously guilty at your
pure wife, when you were full of impurity and dirt.

17.  At 30, you visit Sri Ramakrishna Math, Belur and feel
immense peace.

18.  At 31, you visit Sri Ramanasramam, and get a feeling that
here was a man, who lived like a burning flame and to whom
nothing of these dry leaves could approach without being incinerated.
You feel immense peace.  And you want to retain that peace, regardless of your past.
These thought-ings are more the products of past and some of them
are your vasanas.  Unless, you reject them one by one, as something in which there is no guilt or sin, treating the whole thing as dead
past, dead people, dead names and forms, you cannot get out of them. The sure way for cleaning up this is to chant the name of
your guru or god.

I read an interessting book about a monk who was screened with a modern machine for analysing the chemistry and activity of the brain...

and he writes about his experiences as a child and about meditation etc.

he was a very anxious child, even if his father was one of hte greatest dzogchen masters of hte past century and he had access to the whole spiritual wealth, and was sorrounded by yogins and yoginis, monks etc..

he was terribly fearfull, he had panic attacks ona daily basis, he then atarted to meditate under hte guidance of his father, and during the meditations he was at peace, but as soon as he went out of it, all the fear came back...

with 13 he entered the 3year retreat, a timew of intense spiritual work, he was the youngest monk in tibetan history to do this....he wnet there becaus ethe retreatmaster was very old but seen as a great master...and he wnated to see him before he died

and still he had panic attacks, but karma wanted it to be he netered the retreat, and the first year it get worst and worst, he had a total nervous breakdown...and then decided to into his room and meditate until he is free of he stayed there three days and nights, and hten had the first glimpse of his true nature...

and hten afte 2weeks it was stabilized...after the retreat he became the retreatmaster with age 17 (also the youngest in history)

so they made a research on his brain structure, and found out that when he was meditating on love the activity in the special part of the brain increased for 800%, other meditators who started with their practice not long ago achieved something arround 20%....since this time he is called the happiest person alive :)

in this book he writes about meditation and brainstructure, how it is possible to deprogramnm neuronal patterns (vasanas if you like) see what happens in such situations is nothing else then some atomic neurons are communicating, there is a a smell or taste or sound, and this activates this is nothing harmfull or unspiritual...and through practice it will be naturally changed into a peacefull and still neuronal pattern. was very good to read this and see it de-mystified.

he is called Yongey Mingyur Rinpoche and the book is called "joy of living"

its more or less a book for westerners who have a little interesst in buddhism and spirituality...but anyway even if it feel like a book for relative "beginners" it is full of wisdom

Dear matthias and srkudai,

It is a good information.  The neurons in brain which create anxiety,
panic attacks and on the other extereme side suicidal depressions
etc., cannot be cured by modern psychiatry.  The modern psychiatry
only knows how to benumb the brain, by making the sufferer sleep!
When the sufferer gets up from sleep, he again gets these bouts
of anxiety and depression.  That is why ancient Sages went for
mantras (holy words) which work through the Heart and not the
brain.  So also meditational practice.  In meditation, if one sleeps
it is fine.  But meditation works even after sleep unlike medicines.
But faith is of immense importance.
When Jesus called one leper:  Stand up, you shall be cured, one
who stood up got cured and not the one who doubted (had little
faith) in the words of Jesus.  Faith in meditation and mantra japa
works wonders to cure illnesses.  One should go to the cliff of panic attack to really find the wisdom in Master's words or Presence right
on the cliff, a second, before the huge fall.
