Saranagati Kirtanam
« on: July 21, 2009, 12:34:40 PM »
Sarangati Girtanam is a song composed by Sri Manavasa Ramaswamy
Iyer.  This was sung first in the Hill, by Ramaswamy Iyer, surrendering himself to Bhagavan, as a panacea for his troubles
and tribulations.  This song is famous even today amongst Bhagavan
Ramana's devotees.  In fact I sing this song or at least say:
Saranagati Ramana.... whenever I have some problem.  Or I sing
the famous Tiruvachakam, Anandamalai song:  "You are the only
giving breasts as a mother for me to drink, if you do not give me,
where can I go, I shall suffer like an uncared baby....."

Once on 10th April 1946, in the afternoon, Narayana Swami Iyer's
daughter married to Sundaresa Iyer's son, the couple living in
Kanpur narrated the story.

In Kanpur, we are living on the third floor of a house.  Water was
scarce and water never rose to the third floor for us to get it from
the tap.  We had to climb down the steps for every pot of water.
Oneday I felt very weak and my husband was away for work and
I opened the tap and the water did not as usual, come.  I became
miserable.  Then I placed a pot under the tap and opened the tap and started singing, Saranagati song of M.V. Ramaswamy Iyer.  The water kept trickling down and then flowed down profusely as I was singing
this song.  I continued this song, till all our vessels got filled.  In
the evening I told this miracle  to my husband.  I have found the secret to get rid of our daily water problem!  My husband did not
believe it and on the next day, I sang this song in my husband's
presence, keeping the pot under the open tap.  The water flowed again!  When my father came to Kanpur to see me, I again repeated this experiment in his presence and it just happened!  My father started crying.

My husband then one day asked me to try some other songs.  But
it did not work!

Dear I,

Manavasi Ramaswami Iyer was a supervisor in the Public Works
Department, in Tiruvannamalai.  In 1908, he stood before Bhagavan
Ramana on the Hill and found immense peace within minutes in His
presence.  With horripilation in his body, he then asked: "Bhagavan!
Jesus and other great Jnanis have come to this earth to save the
devotees.  Is there any such saving for me?  Is there any hope
for me?" Bhagavan Ramana looked at him with abundant grace
and then said:  There is hope, yes, there is hope!"  Iyer became
extremely happy and came down the Hill and immediately composed
the famous Saranagati Kirtanam.

An abridged meaning of some verses in the poem is as under:

O Master, I have no direction to go.
You are my refuge;
O Master, you are the Truth, you are the state beyond;
O Master, I have no direction to go either than to you!

The devotees come to you like bees towards the flower!
They enjoy the ambrosia from the flower that is You!

The same Ramaswami Iyer once suffered from acute indigestion
and was living on gruel.  He came to Bhagavan Ramana and
reported his suffering.  Bhagavan Ramana just looked at him.
From that day, his indigestion and colic pain disappeared!

Ramaswami Iyer has also composed a song on this incident.

Bhagavan Ramana had given him Ribhu Gita for study and to
do Atma Vichara.

Dear swayam,

There is a CD where Sarangati Kirtanam has been nicely sung by Malgudi Subha. It is available in the same title in Sri
Ramanasramam.
