Musings over Death - 8
« on: July 09, 2009, 10:31:54 AM »
Mental derangement is as bad as death itself, if not more.
Once Appayya Diskshitar wanted to find out whether he
remembers Siva, even if he goes mad.  He asked his disciples
to crush some umatham flowers and then he gulped the
juice.  These flowers are said to give madness.  Appayya
told his disciples to watch his behaviour and movement for
some hours then give the anti-dote if he becomes uncontrollable.
The disciples agreed with great terpidation.

Appyya took the juice.  Nothing happened.  He was still bathing
in Siva-anubhuti.  He told his disciples to take the palmyra
leaves and writing instruments, and then composed extempore
verses on Siva.  These are fifty in number, and this famous
poem is called  Unmattha Panchasat.  Fifty verses on Madness!

Marana bhayam mikku uLa makkaL aranaga......
Sad Darsanam Verse 2.

Arunachala Siva.
