Ganga-Ashtakam, an eight verse composition of Sankara is a hymn
on the glories of Ganges. A sample,
Verse 2: "Rippling Thou flowest from the feet of Hari,
Whiter than frost or diamonds, or the moon,
O Mother Ganga, take away the burden,
of wicked deeds that weigh upon me,
Bear me across the ocean of the world,
He who has drunk Thy refreshing waters,
He, Thy worshipper, O Mother Ganga,
Never will be seized by the king of death."
Verse 7: "If by Thy grace, one bathes in Thy waters,
Never again one need to enter a mother's womb,
The sins of a liftetime for all annulling,
Jahnavi! Ganga! the world accord Thee
Honour and renown for the glory that is Thine"
