Living on Butter
« on: May 14, 2009, 05:47:27 PM »
Once a devotee brought a tin of Chyavanaprasa, a specific
ayurvedic medicine for cough and keeping general health.
Bhagavan Ramana said:  "The Hill itself is Chyavanaprasa,
[full of ayurvedic medicinal herbs].  Why should I need this?
The cough has come and it will go."  However, He accepted
the tin and told the devotee: "This is enough.  Do not bring
another tin after some time."  Bhagavan laughed then.

A devotee then said:  "Swami!  some people after they come
out of Samadhi, live on butter only.  We have actually seen
some poeple like that.  How can they manage?"

Bhagavan replied with a laugh:  "Aha!  What is that if a person
puts a handful of butter on a leaf and eats it.  How will he have
any appetite thereafter?  For that, one need not come out of Samadhi.  Anyone can eat it and be without appetite.  There are
several herbs.  If they are eaten, one will not feel hungry at all.
Some people keep those herbs in their packets or in their bags
and go on eating them one afer another.  How could they have
any appetite thereafer?  People then say that the Swami is living
without food and he is a great soul.  He thereby becomes a Swami!"
