Sri Ramana Stuti Panchakam
« on: June 25, 2008, 12:36:44 PM »
Sri Ramana Stuti Panchakam, is a group of five songs written by
Satyamangalam Sri Venkataramana Iyer.  Sri Iyer had a darshan
of Bhagavan when He was in Virupaksha Cave and stayed a few
days there.  He composed 4 songs, each a decad, in four days.
He went home and never came back to Bhagavan to see Him.  The
5th song, also a decad, was sent by him to Bhagavan after his return.
These songs are The Decad of the Morning,  The Decad of Kummi
(Kummi is a dance by young girls, standing in a circle and clasping
their two hands and coming round), The Decad of Golden Brilliance,
The Decad of the Golden and Ramana Satguru.  These songs are used
to be sung in presence of Bhagavan by devotees.  Bhagavan said that
on the night of the composition of the Kummi, the devotees in
Virupaksha Cave sang and danced the  'kummi' like frenzied fools!
I believe that Sri Iyer had his path and goal on a single visit!

Sri Ramansramam has come out with a small booklet containing
these songs.   Arunachala Siva.

Dear Subramaniam Sir

Is there any information about Satyamangalam Sri Venkataramana Iyer .I could not find any info about him in Ramanashram publications /David Godman books .
Ramana Stuti Panchakam is what I found the easiest to chant among all the Tamil Parayana and I do it whenever I have time .
Would be glad if you have any info about its author and what sort of interaction he had with Bhagwan Ramana prior to writing these hymns .
Om Peace .

Ravi

You have echoed my own views . I guess that Ramana Stuti Panchakam was composed by Lord Arunachala himself in the guise of Satyamangalam Sri Venkataramana Iyer .
Even a novice can easily chant it .I never get tired chanting it many times .

Dear atmavichar100,

As Ravi said this Sri Ramana Stuti Panchakam is chanted on all Saturday evenings. These poems were composed
by Satyamangalam Venkataramana Iyer.  He had come when Sri Bhagavan was in Virupaksha Cave sometime in
1910-1911 and spent 4 days with him. The other devotees like Ramanatha Brahmachari and Manavasi Ramaswami
Iyer have said that Iyer was an enchanting personality with glowing eyes. He composed one song every day and on
his return to his place sent the fifth song, Ramana Sadguru by post.

Thereafter Iyer never came again to see Sri Bhagavan even during His Mahanirvana. The Asramam authorities tried to
find out who he was but  could not succeed. There are several Satyamangalams (towns) in Tamizh Nadu. No serach
in these places bore fruit.

The idheeham i.e. ancient belief is that Siva Himself came and sang so that Sri Bhagavan would start composing His
verses!

I remember hearing something along these lines  in one of Nochur venkatramans discourses.

Many sages and saints in history have sung the glory and  praised arunachala .
Ramana never composed anything about arunachala until then.
Arunachala himself came to ramana in human form ( with the same name venkatraman ) and composed stutipanchakam.

Ramana had to reciprocate this .
Then came " Arunachala aksharamana malai" from ramana maharshi.

Many people tried to track down this venkramna Iyer but only in vain.

Dear surya,

Yes. Very true.  This person who came in 1910-1911 never came to the Asramam again.

Incidentally, Welcome to the Forum. Please free to contribute and also to interact.

Dear Hari,

He is Kerala Brahmin, in his early 40s, married, with a kid.  He did his M.A in Sanskrit with special subject as Advaita Vedanta.
He is from Nochur in Kerala. He used to come to T'malai right from his young age and he has seen and conversed with
Annamalai Swami, Kanakammal, Kunju Swami and a few others. He found it that Sri Ramana's Teachings are his life's
ambition and Sri Bhagavan is his guru.  Now he lives in T'malai, but goes to several places for Satsangh (discourse).
He is an authority of Srimad Bhagavatam too. He has already given satsanghs on Ulladu narpadu, Akshara Mana Malai,
Ramana Gita, etc., apart from Bhagavad Gita and Srimad Bhagavatam.

Sri V. Ganesan once said: Nochur is the living representative of Sri Bhagavan's teachings.

Dear atmavichar100.

Sri Ramana Stuti Pancdhakm composed by one Satyamangalam Venkataramana Iyer, was done by him in 1910-1911,
when Sri Bhagavan was staying in Virupaksha Cave, He stayed with Him for 4 days and on each day, he composed one
poem. He left T'malai on the 5th day and sent the fifth song by post.

It is believed that this Iyer was a shining and magnetic personality and it is believed that Arunachaleswara had Himself come
and made these songs, so that His Son, Sri Ramana would start composing poems. It is noteworthy that Sri Ramana's Arunachala
Stuti Panchakam etc., were written AFTER Sri Ramana Stuti Panchakam. This Iyer never came to see Sri Bhagavan thereafter
for the remaining  50 years or so!

These five songs are sung on Saturday evening Parayana. These are the only songs other than those of Sri Bhagavan that have
been included in the Weekly Parayana. The songs are melodious full of meaning.

These are:

Kalai Pattu - early morning song.
Kummi  Pattu - a song sung with Kummi game of the girls.
Ponnolir Pathu - Decad of Golden Efflulgence.
Ponnai Otha Pathu - Decad of gold like
Sri Ramana Sadguru

The Tamizh original version is available in Sri Ramanasramam for Rs. 5.
The English translation done by Munagala Venkataramiah is available for Rs 15.

Munagala Venkataramaniah's English rendering does not give word by word meaning, but a general
translation only.
