Ganapati, who can give a girl to you to wed?
« on: February 28, 2009, 09:56:49 AM »
Ganapati is the eternal bachelor in Hindu theology.  Later interpolations says that he is married to Siddhi and Buddhi, the mind and intellect.  He simply lives near rivers and tanks under peepul tree and grace devotees.  He is happy with coconuts, jaggery, and ground nuts.  No one gives a girl for him to marry.  The poet Kalamegam sings:

O the brave and graceful Ganapati, who would give a girl to you
  to wed?
Your father is a Kabali, the beggar with tiger skin as his dress!
Your maternal uncle is a thief stealing butter and milk!
Your younger brother has married off a hunter girl with kadamba garlands.
Your mother is devil with blue body and eyes!*
Your face is that of an elephant and your belly is huge!

(* Uma is called Neeli, the blue eyed goddess.  Neeli in Tamil means
blue tinged and also a devil.)
