Miracles Do Happen

Mastan was born in Desur, a small village near Tiruvannamalai.  He
was a weaver by profession and he was brought to Bhagavan Ramana by Akhilandamma.  He came under the spell of 'bhakti'
right from his young age and during Moharram festival, he used to
wear garb of a 'pandaram' (a Saiva monk), smear Vibhuti all over his body and move around carrying a begging bowl.  He used to send
codpiece for Bhagavan Ramana weaved by him.

In 1914, he visited Bhagavan Ramana.  He described to Kunju
Swami: "When I came to Bhagavan, He was seated like a rock...
and His unwavering gaze was filled with grace, compassion and
steady wisdom.  I stood beside His side.  After giving me a look,
he opened the gate of his Heart and I was also established in His
state.  I stood like that for eight hours, absolutely without fatigue,
but with total absorption and peace....."  This happened in Virupakshi Cave.

Mastan is one of the few devotees, who had the taste of the Self in
their very first visits. (like Wolter A. Keers and a few others.)

Mastan has not made songs in praise of Bhagavan Ramana.  However, one Sambandan, an associate of Mastan, has made an
eleven verse composition, describing Mastan's spriitual sayings,
called "Desur Mastan Swamigal Bhakti Rasa Patigam, Eleven Verses
of Tasty Devotion on Desur Mastan Swami.

Mastan is a very special case.  He came pure and so he got the
reward during his first visit itself.  So was also Humphreys, the
first European who visited Bhagavan.  Bhagavan Ramana secretly
gave him upadesa and He told him:  I am your Guru.
