Sekkizhar then narrates the group of 'Those who wear the Holy
Ashes always'.  These are Siva devotees belonging to all classes
and all stages of life (asramas), like Brahmacharya, Householder,
Vanaprasta, forest dwellers and Ascetics.  They always apply holy ashes
on their bodies and do their duties allotted in the society.  The holy ashes
are prepared in three prescribed ways, kalpa, anukalpa and upakalpa.
These devotees always Siva's name, either the prescribed Panchakshara,
(for upper classes) or merely as Siva, Siva, which needs no initiation.

These weares of holy ashes reach Siva's Abode, after the karmas
levied in this birth are over.

Saiva Siddhanta says that there are twelve places on which the holy
ashes are applied, by Siva bhaktas, Siva yogis and Siva Jnanis.
These are, on the forehead (1), on upperchest, midchest and lower
chest (3), on the three parts of two hands, from shoulders to wrist. (6)
and on both sides of the upperback on left and right (2). Totally 12.
