Bhagavan Ramana's Jayanti -11.1.2009
« on: January 11, 2009, 09:50:45 AM »
It was past midnight on 30th December 1879.  He was born in
Tiruchuzhi on that cold wintry night to Mother Azhagammal.  The
Sun, brighter than 1000 suns, that could remove the cold shivers
of ajnana on that chill night was born.  He is the Son of Siva, the
avatara of Skanda, who went to His Father's Abode when He was 16.
Today is 129th Ramana Jayanti.  Asramam will be having a special
festive appearance today.  Atleast a thousand will take food there,
Bhagavan's prasad.  Books will be sold in large numbers.

When it was first proposed by His devotees, in 1912, Bhagavan protested and composed the following poem.

1. You who wish to celebrate a birthday, inquire first who was born.
One's true birthday is when one enters into the Eternal Being which shines for ever without birth or death.

2. Of all days on one's birthday one should mourn one's fall into
samsara.  To celebrate it as a festival is like adorning and glorifying
a corpse.  To seek one's Self and merge in it is Wisdom.
                                                 (Translation by Prof. K. Swaminathan)

However, devotees said that it is for them, to remember Bhagavan ever in their Hearts, that the birthday should be celebrated, even though Bhagavan Himself did not like that idea.

Muruganar has sung:

When we sit before you, your Effulgence emanating through Your eyes, is constantly falling on us and we are not able to  bear it.  How come, your Mother did bear that Effulgence, for ten months in her womb?

On this day, let us all pray to that everliving Guru, to constantly remain in our Hearts and bestow liberation in our present births.

Arunachala Siva.
